I was just reading from a science magazine...Scientific American Dec 2011 P46 (( Crops that don’t need replanting))
Farmers in Malawi are already getting radically higher yields by planting rows of perennial pigeon peas between rows of their usual staple corn. The peas are a much needed source of protein for subsistence farmers, but the legumes also increase soil water retention and double soil carbon and nitrogen content without reducing the yield of the primary crop on any given plot of land.

I am thinking just outside of what they are talking about. I am interested in the part where the Pigeon peas plants increase soil water retention and double soil carbon and nitrogen, without harming nearby plants.

Anxiously awaiting Spring and will be sowing those seeds every where. If were to keep those in the rose garden cropped back I wonder if they would look like bonzi kinda bushes? I will be putting those seeds in an area where I do not grow anything.

    this is great!

December 30th, and I could mow the lawn.
Lawn so dry and firm. Good temperature as well; only a jumper required while mowing.

Fennel is an excellent plant for attracting ladybugs. The statuesque plants are usually covered in ladybug eggs and larvae. Set aside a space in your garden for this beneficial herb.

    I will plant many seeds.

Letric: You have done quite a study of the histroy of Roses! That Lady Banks is beautiful but can she take over a huge area. My little yard is too small for her.

Hairy Vetch.... used as a cover crop http://www.johnnyseeds.com/p-6265-hairy-vetch-og.aspx

It is nitrogen-producing and extremely robust, winter hardy, and a prolific nitrogen fixer.
Spring has come earlier than expected and it has grown vigorously and climbing up my plants. So I have had to quickly pull them down and rip up as many plants as I could get hold of. I am sure I have missed some plant but they are still smaller and not aggressively trying to take over my plants.
