Hrm, how did Movietowne manage to get this early? Everywhere in the states says it opens on the 18th.
Already bought a ticket for the saturday showing. In 3D none the less! Supposedly this film will be our "star wars."
Just for clarification, the Avatar I am speaking about is James Cameron's 2009 film; not the Avatar TV series or the 2010 film "The Last Airbender" based on said series.
Today I saw Avatar and I am still stunned. At least in my books this sits up there on the shelf of the most groundbreaking films ever made. The CG work is beautiful; there are many times that you will find yourself unsure as to what is real and what is not. The story is beautiful. There is an entirely alien society that is yet so eerily familiar. There is corporate greed and the harsh mindset of a soldier. There is the quest of a lost soul trying to find his way in a strange land. Perhaps the best way I can phrase it is that Avatar is one CG-fest that does not forget it is trying to tell a story.
Any spoilers that follow are nothing that cannot be gathered from the film's trailer.
Pandora is a moon orbiting a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri system. It is home to many forms of exotic life including the humanoid Na'vi and an extremely valuable mineral called Unobtainium being mined by humans.
The story follows Jake Sully, a crippled marine returned to service to pilot an avatar on Pandora. The avatars are Na'vi bodies fused with human DNA, allowing them to be piloted by humans via a form of mind link. One Na'vi tribe sits on an invaluable source of Unobtainium. Jake's job is to enter this tribe and learn their ways, their wants and their needs. If he does his job right, he will be given access to the treatment that could restore the use of his legs. As events unfold however, Jake finds himself in the midst of a looming war, unsure of his true place and faced with those horrible moral dilemmas that all good writers put their protagonists through.

I dunno. Some movies get released earlier in international markets. Since Movie Towne opened we joined that crowd rather than getting everything months later. :P
EDIT: I actually did feel like it was seeing a new Star Wars. Aside from just being a really good film it felt like it was a whole new kind of movie and a milestone for film making.
Cameron has created a classic with this one.

I definitely need to make an extra effort to go see this movie. I see CC8 has 3D now.
..I seriously don't care..

I saw this movie.....it was a good thing that it was in 3D or else I would have walked out.

CC8 has bad service, bad facilities, and Trincity Mall car park is just plain insecure. I'm one of those folk who don't go there because I would be worrying about my car the whole time I'm inside.
Sorry Avatar; much as I want to see you in 3D I'll have to pass on it.

^get a drop or something man.
amzz i went last week thursday (christmas eve).....was a mess...teenagers all over d bloody place....just go about yuh business quickly don't hang around
3D!!

I could. But I like the flexibility of moving with my own car. The setting CC8 has isn't good enough for me to warrant going through the trouble of arranging alternate transport. My last few visits to CC8 involved uncomfortable seating, poor service and filthy facilities. Not much of a lure at all.
I'll wait and hope they release it on the upcoming Blu-ray 3D specification. Well, I'm almost certain they will.

it was awesome in 3D!!!
i liked the movie, but there was one thing that stood out to me storywise
obviously it was a film based on colonization...the na'vi reminded me of 'blue' coloured africans (especially since the majority of the na'vi cast were of that race...btw, the girl who played Neytri- Zoe Saldana is gorgeous!)
not only physical features, even the social culture and religion, very nature based....
kinda seemed like a stereotype of some sort to me

Im not sure, but I think d blue hue is fashioned after the Hindu Lord, Krishna.

It was a fantastic movie - I loved it! Would also like to c it in 3D but not willing to go c8. I mean it if they improved service, facilities etc I'd think about it. I doh ever go there anymore yes. I'm hoping that the movietowne in price plaza will have 3D. That would be good. Anyway, can't wait for it to come out in video so that it can become part ofmy collection!
