No nothing's wrong with it, apart from it being a racial slur of course.
Really? You see nothing wrong with using that word in this context? You don't think that's even a little bit offensive to other users?
Hear what, take to walk in downtown Port of Spain, go around randomly calling people 'baboon' and see what sort of reaction you get, won't be nice I assure you.
Broad, what do you mean by 'in this context'? Because he is black or because he acted like an animal? Double T, where are you?
are you for real?Originally Posted by broadsword

the president of the united states allegedly called him a 'jackass'. i called him a baboon. racial slur????
it's no different from calling anybody a donkey or a monkey.
and no, i don't think it's the least bit offensive to other users. i called him an "illiterate, uneducated, ignorant, selfish, baboon" due to his stupid, classless and animalistic behaviour on sunday night. i think it's quite bizarre that anyone could feel offended and impute a racist intent from that statement.
i feel so high, like if i could fly...
Let say you're a black man and someone calls you a monkey, wouldn't you find that offensive? Monkey, baboon, chimp are all racial terms, used to derogatorily describe black people.
Regardless of whether or not he acted like an animal (I'm not denying this), baboon is never an appropriate word to use to describe someone because of its synonymy with discrimination and intolerance.
LOL :: @ Ali
Broadsword, we must always try to steer clear of offending people- and I see this is what your encouraging which is in itself a good thing....but
the more I live the more I see 'apologists for black people' staking their claims on more and more words, soon we'll all have to just use sign langugage, and a sanitised one to boot! :|
I agree with Broadsword... to an extent.
References to monkeys, apes, chimps etc has been traditionally used as derogatory terms for Africans. A fact many are sensitive to and feel strongly about.
On the other hand, I myself only learned about this a couple months ago, literally a couple months ago. I live ina country full of black ppl, where racial tension exists in certain contexts, and while I think I have a good idea of all the slurs used against the races predominant in this country, monkey, baboon etc were never among them.
So, falcs point is valid too - having learnt of the historical use of these words as racial slurs, u take ownership of those words that would otherwise just be used as normal insults and perpetuate them as race related. Where I would have simply teasingly referred to a friend as a monkey I now have to think twice and thrice and the friend isnt even aware of the racist connotations bec we didnt grow up with it.

I would surmise that ever since some 'racist' in the US used it as a derogatory term to describe black people ....all of a sudden, it would appear it is now the new 'N' word. :roll:Originally Posted by sylvestter

I think he acted like an ignorant, selfish........fi? fis?.........fish?, yes, that's it, he acted like a fish

Snow...busting a cap is shooting someone. Remember cap guns?
That's where the reference is rooted.
And although i see nothing wrong with Sylvesster's use of 'baboon' in this thread, I do concur with Zack and Broadsword that calling a black man baboon in a fit of anger will be construed as a racial insult.
I know that's how I would take it if uttered to me in anger.
I don't react to words, per se. I react to the sentiment behind the words.

but with all due respect majik..... what is your ethnic background?
I am sure until that time when someone actually used that word as a derogatory term..... you like me, would have taken it in a whole different light....now as long as it is said in anger (by a none black), it automatically means something more than being 'stupid'.
if someone called me a baboon, I would honestly think they were saying I were stupid.
"Yuh kar want fer dem..... wat dey doh want fer deyself"
Then why not just say stupid or some synonym of that word other than one which could be construed as a racial slur, the English language is very broad I'm sure there are other words which can be used.Originally Posted by snowbird
I'm sure sylvestter wasn't being racist when he said baboon but you can certainly see where that word can be used intentionally to have racist connotations.
I was going to point out the baboon thing since the first time I saw it, but I wrongly figured no one else would know about the racist connotations.
I tend to not roll my eyes and dismiss the words that offend people. I learn something new, and my vocabulary's broad enough for me to not be ambiguous when I'm communicating my feelings. I personally doh see what's so tough about that.
Never know when I might want someone to respect my sensibilities.

i certainly didn't know that there were 'racist connotations' and am still bewildered as to how it could possibly be insulting.Originally Posted by Huma
