But the father said to his servants,
    Quick! Bring the best robe
and put it ls on him. Put a ring on his
finger and sandals on his feet. Bring
the fatten calf and kill it. Let's have a
feast and celebrate. For this son of
mine was dead and is alive again; he
    was lost and is found.
    So they began to celebrate.

Gnosticism was a wide-ranging religious movement of the first millennium AD whose
adherents sought salvation through gnosis-knowledge - and mystical experience.
Gnostics were Christians, Jewish, Greco-Roman, Persian, Cathars and there were
even some Muslim Gnostics, and what characterised them all was that the belief
hat the knowledge they studied and believed in gave them direct assess to God.
Gnostics were condemned and persecuted as heretics. The texts which were
sacred to Gnostics come from the traditions of all main religions plus many other
lesser-followed faiths. The most beautiful of the Gnostic texts, such as the Gospel
of Thomas, Phillip, Judas and Mary Magdalene, the Book of Baruch, the Songs of
Solomon, The Ginza, the Mandaean Liturgy and the Gospel of the Secret Supper,
is little-understood branch of the Abrahamic religions.

Every religion and culture since time immemorial has attempted to personify evil in some way, but
Christianity in particular developed a highly graphic view of Satan from its earliest period. He has
been portrayed as grotesque and beautiful, threatening and helpful, terrifying and comical, playing
a varietry of roles in human existence. In the Middle Ages he was feared and frightening adversary
of humankind, blamed for everything from crop failure to infertility. In the 16th century he was the
supposed master and friend of witches, many of whom were burned, and in the 17th century he was
cast as seducer-in-chief of the devout. Wiith the dawning of the modern age in the 19th century,
Euroope began to lose its faith in the literal ersion of the Bible and therefore Satan himself, but exported
him to all his traqdional aspects to its empires. Then cvia the media of book film, in the 20th century
he made a spectacular comeback as a renewed focus of admiratrion and even worship

A good practice to be concerned whether or not we are keeping God's Word.

The ancient Greek philosopher Protagoras was a famous early animistic who believed
it is not possible to settle whether God exists or not. He wrote:

Religious cults of the Graeco-Roman world, the most famous were the Demeter
at Eleusis, in Greece, but the cults of Dionysus, Isis, and Mithra are also involved
into mysteries. Christain mystics reject the idea common in some other religions,
of the absorption of the individual in to the divine, and retain the distinction between
the in dividual beliver and God. Mysticism takes its place along the devotional aspect
of worship, although many argue as to the relative merits of each.
