I have never ever been impressed with ANY opening ceremony. Minshall or no Minshall.

Today though, I was blown away by what a country did to show the world its rich diversity of people and culture.
      Just simply, WOW!!

Well, it looks like it went much better without Steven Speilberg who quit earlier this year as artistic director.

Beijing has raised the level of what an opening ceremony should be in every aspect. The theme, choreography, fireworks, lighting etc..even the lighting of the torch. It would be very difficult to beat for a long time.
But, one thing I observed, what did they do with all dem ugly chinee women? lock them up? Only the pretty ones qualified?

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE BEIJING OLYMPICS 2008 TORCH
The torch is 72 centimetres high, weighs 985 grams and is made of aluminium. The torch is of a curved surface form, with etching and anodizing being used during its production. A torch can usually keep burning for approximately 15 minutes in conditions where the flame is 25 to 30 centimetres high in a windless environment.

The torch has been produced to withstand winds of up to 65 kilometres per hour and to stay alight in rain up to 50mm an hour. The flame can be identified and photographed in sunshine and areas of extreme brightness. The fuel is propane which is in accordance with environmental guidelines. The material of its form is recyclable.

I am disappointed. Trinis are known for waving. There is waving in calypso, there is waving while dancing, you wave a hand, kerchief, towel, socks, what ever is handy (bra and bloomers sometimes). This was a very good time for the flag-brarer to give the wave of his life but he just walked as if carrying a coffin.

hmmm most of the other swimmers from other countries were not even in the march...cuz their event was the next day or something...but Bovell was our flag bearer...and his event is near too...hmmm.....so if he doesnt perform well..im sure they;re gonna blame it on the fact that he was supposed to be resting.....i guess thats why he didnt look excited.....by waving d flag..and even by smiling..he might have tired himself out..LOL ::

Uncertainty over flagbearer for Beijing opening ceremony
By WALTER ALIBEY Friday, August 8 2008

THERE was much uncertainty last evening (Friday morning Beijing time) about the athlete to carry the Trinidad and Tobago flag at the Opening Ceremony later today of the XXIX Olympic Games.

It was earlier reported that swimmer George Bovell III, who earned a bronze medal in Athens, Greece four years ago had been tipped to be awarded the privilege and honour at the four-hour curtain-raiser sheduled to start at 8 pm (8 am Beijing).

Lat night General Secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) Brian Lewis said that the flag-bearer was yet to be chosen, mere hours before the gala opening.

Lewis said that past TTOC protocol suggested that Bovell III , the only Olympic medalist in the Beijing team would be the one to march at the helm of the TT contingent.

However, Lwis said that in Athens the ace swimmer opted out from the opening ceremony since his competition normally shortly after.

“The choice it would appear is up to the Athens bronze medalist to decide.

Next in line in terms of Olympic credentials would be shot put hopeful Cleopatra Borel-Brown,” Lewis stated yesterday.

Among the other athletes who could be in contention to carry the flag are ace sprinters Richard Thompson, Ato Stephens (formerly Modibo) and Renny Quow; swimmers Shantelle Mc Lean; Bovell III’s sibling Nicholas and tennis ace Dexter St Louis.

According to Lewis, Chef de Mission Michael Valentine has been entrusted with the responsibility of selecting the flag bearer.

In a release sent out last night (Friday morning Beijing time) Lewis noted: “Internally, there were still some aspects to be worked out.”

He said participating in the Opening Ceremony of the summer Olympic games is one that all Olympic team members eagerly anticipate and treasure.

He added however that for various reasons not everyone is able to take part, but carrying the national flag is considered a privilege and honour.

The Beijing Olympics he said is no exception but has expressed concerns over the hazy conditions which has made visibility difficult.

“Yesterday visibility was really bad and it is the only thing that has been a damped in Beijing to date” Lewis said.

Because of this Lewis pointed out that a number of nations have opted to set up training camps outside the capital city.

George Bovell III will swim in HEAT 6 on Tuesday Aug 12 at 18.33 Beijing time. (100m freestyle)
George Bovell III will swim in HEAT 11 on Thursday Aug 14 also at 18.33 Beijing time. (50m freestyle)

will do the rest later; they seem to be less straightforward.

So all now tv6 showing some pentecostal prog and no olympics and nbc etc are blocked.
We missing everything becos of tv6 selective selection.
I wanna see beach volleyball, gymnastic etc and if tv6 decide they not showing it then is my loss. Stupes.
