    Default What makes a speecdh memorable?

    Is it the character of the speaker or their way with words?
    To those who understand, no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible.

    I would not be ashamed to have a monkey for my ancestor, but I
    would be ashamed to be connected with a man who used his great
    gifts to obscure the truth.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895)

    Seven months after Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species was published, a debate was organised
    between its adherents and opponents including T H Huxley and Bishop Samuel Wilberforce. A day before,
    Huxley had said that whether he was descended from a gorilla or not was of n o significance, so the bishop
    asked him whether his preference was to be descended from a monkey okay on his grandfather's side or grandmother's. Huxley's retort is said to have caused one lady in the audience to collapse.

    "Love is patient and kind. Love knows neither envy nor jealousy.
    Love is not forward and self-assertive, nor boastful and conceited.
    She does not behave unbecoming, nor seek to aggrandise herself,
    nor blaze out in passionate anger, nor brood over wrongs. She finds
    no pleasure in injustice done to others, but joyfully sides side with the
    truth. She knows how to be silent. She is full of trust, full of hope,
    full of patient endurance."

    Saint Paul
    Saul of Tarsus died c. AD 67

    In the first letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul was one of the most active of the early
    Christian missionaries, travelling widely around the Mediterranean to spread the word.

    When things are investigated, then true knowledge is achieved;
    When true knowledge is achieved, then the will becomes sincere;
    When the will is sincere, then the heart is set right;
    When the heart is set right, then the personal life is cultivated;
    When the personal life is cultivated, the the family life is regulated;
    when the family life is regulated, then the national life is orderly;
    and when the national life is orderly, then there is peace in the world.
    Confucius 551-479 BC

    Thousands of wise and witty sayings are attributed to the Chinese scholar Confucius, including many that run contrary to his teachings, which emphasised morality - both personal and public - sincerity, respect and the correct conduct of social relationships.

    The answer is that it can be any of these, people have used speeches to inspire,
    threaten, provoke thought or laughter, filled with love or overflowing hatred.

    "Big Brother is watching you"
    George Orwell 1903-1950

    Orwell was a writer and journalist. He loathed totalitarianism and was passionate
    about social injustice. His two most famous novels Animal Farm and 1984, are
    both critiques of political systems.

    Off the cuff remarks, retorts and announcements from across the world, taken as a whole,
    they provide a broad picture of the way the use of rhetoric has changed from lengthy,
    impassioned speeches to the pre-mass communications era to the three-minute address
    or even shorter soundbite common now.

    Some are easy for all to agree with, others not so easy, and
    some contain ideas repellent to almost anyone. But at least,
    provide thought.

    If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
    Eldridge Cleaver 1935-1998

    Eldridge Cleaver in the 1960s appeared to epitomise what white feared. An early member of the Black Panthers and their Minister of Information, he had a history of violent crime and a prison record. A few days after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, he addressed a rally against the Vietnam War. Over the the next few months he became a highly visible spokesperson and stood on the radical left of the Peace for Freedom Party For the presidency but was eventually ruled ineligible because he was too young.

    On March 23, 1983 President Reagan addressed the nation from Oval Office on a matter of perceived national security, speaking about the contrast between Soviet arms build -up and military assistance
    in strategic locations around the world with the continuing military rundown. He then announced the decision to develop and implement Strategic Defense Initiative, a system that he hoped would be able
    to intercept and destroy Soviet - or anyone else's strategic ballistic nuclear missiles before they reached American territory with both background- and space-based technologies.Inevitably, the initiative was dubbed Star Wars by critics and the media.

    The US invasion of Grenada came a few months later.

    Descartes is now regarded as the founder of modern Western philosophy, and his simple maxim is one of its founding arguments, published in his Discourse on Method. The statement - often used in the Latin Cogito, ergo sum, means that he only knew that he existed because he was a thinking being. If someone doubts whether he or she exists, it is proof that he or she does. The senses are not to be trusted, as they can be mistaken. He used the example of a piece of wax that,when it becomes heated, becomes different from when it was cold. It was only through thinking, that he knew that the solid and melted wax were the same thing.

    Je pense donce je suis. (I think, therefore I am.)

    Descartes also revolutionised Western mathematics, especially geometry and algebra.
