An Australian information technology expert said social media users have to get used to being cautious about what they write online, after two British tourists said they were thrown out of the US for joking on Twitter that they were going to "destroy America" and dig up Marilyn Monroe's grave.

Leigh Van Bryan, 26, and Emily Bunting, 24, said they were detained at Los Angeles International Airport, locked up in prison overnight, and had their bags searched for spades and shovels before they were placed on a flight back to the UK last Wednesday, the Daily Mail reported.

Mr Bryan tweeted earlier in January to a friend, "free this week for a quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America? x" and "3 weeks today, we're totally in LA pissing people off on Hollywood Blvd and diggin' Marilyn Monroe up!"
