Seems like you could be making $10,000,000.00 a year like some Trinis living in Trinidad on this board, and still qualify for an HDC house.
Do you see how vague the rules are?

Who can dispute that someone who lives in the US and possesses an ID card is not a resident of Trinidad and Tobago?

What I believe should be done is to get their rules and regulations more definitive to include, to exclude and which will treat all application on an individual case by case and need based basis, with a ceiling cap on affordability based on income.

    Very true.

This thing is ripe for boball and political patronage, so don't expect any changes at all.

When one stops to consider how simple it is to revise the policies, rules and regulations, it is mind boggling why it hasn't been done before, but it simply take a Cabinet note and to let the revisions begin.

Probably is because of the bobol, I dunno, but this is where the CEO of HDC [not the Minister of Housing] if failing in her job responsibilities, and as long as the status quo exists .. it's fair game.

    Correction:

.... We have two systems that benefit Seniors in their older years.... The first is Canada 'Pension' which one is only entitled to if one has paid into it via employee/employer contributions during your earning years (this pension cheque can be mailed to you in any part of the world you happen to reside during your retirement).... Meh government eh touching dis one ....Ah doh tink....dey now debating dis in deh ``House

The other is 'Old Age Security' which everyone is entitled to once you get to 65.... this one also has an 'income test' whereby you qualify for an additional supplemental amount.... if your income is under a certain level.`...Dis is the one dem want tuh put orf givin people at 65..... ting is....is poor people who need dis....so dey takin some `heat`in de House right now on dis.... ah eh tink dey go pass de proposed changes.... but den again dey have a `Majority`so who knows

So it looks like while T&T wants to give their Seniors ......more

Canada trying to give their Seniors ..... less

    ah coming back home

Now here is the kicker.... with the Old Age Security.... you are not obligated to state where you have lived for most of your life...while some people do declare it.....most don't.... As a result, some people who have immigrated to Canada ...but never stayed ...they simply.... came in.... got their residency and sometimes even stayed the five years so that they could get their 'citizenship'....then left again....went back home....Then come age 65, they file to collect their Old Age Security.

... This really burns me as these people have contributed nothing by way of taxes or human resource to the country..... yet, they get rewarded the same as those who have contributed..... But I blame the government for not tightening up..... for doing things like checking the 'travel patterns' to see just how much time they have spent ...outside of the country....checking things like tax returns etc.

Bottom line is..... as long as you have a system that tries to be generous to it's residents..... someone will find a way to take it.
I agree ..as an example, I am on SSDI Do you know it does not matter what part of the world I live, I will receive my monthly payment. The same would go for someone who is receiving Social Security.

Here is where it can be abused ... I can take babysitting job and not report that income .. therefore, I can end up making more money than someone who is working and paying taxes. So here there are people working and paying taxes so I can get my SSDI, and I am working, not paying taxes and getting SSDI.

So this "entitlement" claim is not limited to Trinidad, it is in the US and as you say in Canada too.

Bottom line is ...... human nature being what it is ......when some see an opportunity to take..... dey go take. However, in my country..... I still see ways of tightening up...and closing the loop holes .... so I will continue to bug my MP until it is acted upon.

Look ah get so vex the other day..... I now hear our PM saying they want to 'push back' the qualifying age for Canada Pension from 65.....to 67 ....... just when is my time to collect..... dey having meh wait two more years....

I just finished writing an 'open letter' to my PM (copies gone to all the National News Papers).... in it I told him...... if I knew my pension date was going to be a 'moving target'..... I would have chosen a career in Politics....this way, all I would have had to do is .....serve one term..... to be eligible to pension at age 55 ....ah wuda be eating at de trough 10 years now

Bottom line is..... as long as you have a system that tries to be generous to it's residents..... someone will find a way to take it....I tried to address this with my MP some years ago when we had a situation where the Government ended up paying to return '50,000 so called Canadians' (entire families) from a country when civil war broke out..... only to have most of them return once things settled down...those people had no intention of living here....they simply went through the process of getting citizenship.....so that they could return when they needed major medical attention.... when it was time for their children to go to university (so that their fees were not based on the foreign rate)...and so at 65...their Seniors could get old age security.... it is a scandal what is going on.....but our Government is too darm 'politically correct' to start snooping around.

....buh noooo.....dey hah tuh let in some ah dem bogus Trickydadian refugees back in de 80'd and 90's .... so now de chickens comin home tuh roost

...... IN 1990 an entire village in Central Trinidad shot into the headlines when they declared themselves a separate state from Trinidad and Tobago, renamed their district Indesh and sought refugee status in Canada. The group, linked to a Toronto-based Indesh Freedom Party, claimed they were being discriminated against politically and economically.Their asylum claims, as well as hundreds of others being made by Trinidad and Tobago nationals who had already entered Canada, caught the attention of that country’s immigration authorities. At the time there were no visa requirements for citizens of this country entering Canada and many were taking advantage of provisions in the 1976 Immigration Act which outlined a process for people who arrived in the country asking for asylum.

Word quickly got around that anyone had the right to make a refugee claim. According to unofficial estimates, more than 15,000 TT nationals applied for refugee status in Canada during the 1980s. In one year alone there were 2,300 refugee claims and a small industry developed with immigration lawyers, consultants and others vying to cash in on the situation.....

Doh blame my fellow Trinidadians for seeking a better life for themselves and their families, by any means necessary.

Is not like they came bearing blankets full ah diseases, and cacapool rum.

Long before they came in the 90s, Cyanada was a place full off nasty, racist people.

But Snow, is the same darn thing going on here with the Hispanics. Not too long ago they caught a van load of women and children trying to cross the border in Texas ... the 4 women in the van was pregnant. A lot of them coming over here pregnant and Medicaid have to pay for all their medical care, delivery of the baby and plus give the WIC for the babies and food stamps for the other children.

They know the women are illegal, but once they get on American soil, the Authorities hands are tied because of the Law here functions in regards to pregnant women and children.

VAIO my princes, this is what I would like you to do. I would like you to lead a civil disobedience move (Remember D ole BAS did talk bout that). Here is the plan: Call every radio station (of course, you can solicit help from people of like- mind), and every TV station, and ask everybody to start a letter-writing campaign, a call-in campaign, and a E-mail campaign. This campaign must also include the opposition.
The plan will unfold like this. If you last name starts with "A" you must call, as well as e-mail all the parliamentarians on monday; if your last name starts with "B", ditto for tuesday, "C" ditto for wednesday, etc. I AM SERIOUS AS AH HEART ATTACK.

NB: When I say call-in . I mean call the parliamentarians phone. The idea is to jam their phones, and flood their IN BOX.

If you say what you think, don't expect to hear only what you like.
Some men change their party for the sake of their principles, others change their principles for the sake of the party..
