Default Trinidad and Tobago drops in Press Freedom Ranking

    http://www.ctntworld.com/LocalArticles.aspx?id=37792

Trinidad and Tobago's ranking in freedom of the press has dropped 20 places
in the latest report put out by international media watchdog group, Reporters
    without Borders.

The country now ranks at 50 out of 179 countries in the 2011-2012 Index.
This ranking is shared with Latvia.

Reporters without Borders said: "There was a surprise of a different kind in
Trinidad and Tobago (50th, down 20 places) as a result of a scandal involving
spying on journalists, as well as moves to boycott radio and television stations
    and procedural abuses.”

Reporters without Borders also said Jamaica is the Caribbean country which is
leading in press freedom. Suriname is ranked at 22, and the seven-member
Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States moved up by 32 places to sit at 25.

But eh eh like the USA no better than we in freedom of the press

U.S falls to 47th in press freedom rankings after Occupy crackdown

The annual report by Reporters Without Borders has been released, showing the United States fell 27 points on the list due to the many arrests of journalists covering Occupy Wall Street protests.

The slide in the United States places it just behind Comoros and Taiwan in a group with Argentina and Romania.

I hope nobody wants to act surprised.

Our governments love to "tweak" our press.

Not that our press is very responsible to begin with.

Oh what a fine mess it all is.

What first world like you did not notice the USA had a 27 point drop, the land of the free is not living up to its name. We all know what to expect from the press in T&T, so no one in their right minds will try to compare T&T to the USA.

You mean you not surprised at the news I am, just goes to show with all the freedom some of you like to say T&T missing, others seeing all yuh first world place slowly becoming just like we MOKO REPUBLIC ent??

Your government seems to have adopted a policy of ......"If we want your opinion (journalist) .... we'll give it to you" you people live in a country of ....press releases and press conferences

.... I would rather your government (and the people who read the news)....set some 'higher standards' for the way things are reported.

.... this way, the government themselves do not become ..... an unflattering ... object/subject of what is being reported.

ANGIE, my good friend, I don't think it's sad. I don't think it's so much a comparison as which country is better. It's akin to looking at a great soccer team, or cricket team, and motivating your team to aspire to reach the top, by emulating the top teams. If you decide to play your soccer team 4-2-4, or 3-5-2, or whatever combination you think would work for you.

How is the government supposed to set high standards when the journalists have little common sense, don't know when to hold back an innocent child's name, can't write at a standard 5 level and have no clue how to do investigative journalism?
