Apologise to all there's a bit missing from the story, my stbx is now residing in England so both my son and daughter were born and raised in the UK. The only contact I have with the kids is at the weekend. This is my sons picture taken a few days ago and below that is the stupid ass response I received from the mother.

For me culturally, Ethan does not have to have his hair cut unless i see fit. If you are having problems managing his hair, I will try to have it corn-rowed before you collect him as far as I possibly can.

If you did any research at all into my culture, you would see that it is normal for boys of ethan's age to wear their hair in a ponytail.

Phatman...i think your issue is the part I highlighted.
there are no cultural reasons per se, apparently (according to her), it's a MOTHER's choice
65% of all humans who have ever lived, are alive right now, 1 billion of them are children. Sustainable?

Your son's mother is wrong about the cultural aspect of cutting your son's hair unless he's a Rastafarian, and that is a religious belief, not cultural. However, if I were in your place, I'd leave this issue alone since your son has beautiful hair, and, is it really worth it to create more ill feelings between you and your ex over something so trivial? When your son gets older, he'll decide for himself or peer pressure will cause him to demand from his mother that she cut his hair. But, there are many people who would do almost anything to have hair as beautiful as your son's.

mrxphatman: If you had not said that this child was a boy, I would have complimented your cute pretty girl.
If the mother wishes to assist you by braiding the child's hair, just thank her for her assistance and let her do the braiding job.
Take a deep deep breath and overlook the long hair. I agree with the other posters that Mother Time will take care of this.
Now that you know that there is NO cultural reasons for not cutting the hair, you have the knowledge and rubbing it in her face could only make matters worse.
The child is 5 and it will be one or 2 years from now when the child will make his choice. Be a good father and role model for him, show him how to live happily and without out hate.

Now let's give it to him in small doses majik ..... the last thing we need him doing is ....trying to 'analyze' how we came up with those terms

because if he does..... mamaguy could appear to him to mean.... a boy with long hair (mama = hair as long as his mother, guy = boy)

boy de local vernacular eh easy nah

    Mrxphatman:

There are religious reasons if your ex is Rastafarian or Muslim. Otherwise, it is based on superstition and has become a societal norm here in T&T.
I wanted to ask God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

LOOOOL, you lot make me die, I do understand some of what you are saying as Ive been to Trini a couple of times, "six for a nine" I know what that is and some others. I will be back here from time to time to learn the lingo as I don't want her pulling the wool over my eyes. She isn't Muslim and he's not a Rastafarian so it's not done because of that but many thanks all of you for enlightening me.

My godson was a gorrrrgeous baby. As he entered the toddler stage, his hair went from a full MJ Afro to hair down his back. My best friend didn't cutit until he was 7,8 yrs old. People did mistake him for a girl because he was so pretty, like guy guy's baby pic. It did bother Tryel being mistaken for a girl though. His mom would ponytail it or cornrow it. When he got his hair cut, I was kindah sad, however it had to happen. Know his is so dang handsome I can't stand it! Lol
