not that i know of phatman...
although, my brother did have long hair up until he was about 5. my parents cut it after a little girl asked to see his cookolooks to prove that he was a boy
This may seem an odd question so not sure if I have posted this in the right section. Not going to go into the details but I have a 5 year old son with my now ex wife, currently he has shoulder length hair and he looks mmore like a girl (he's been mistaken for a girl on a number of occasions) She is trini and i'm british, my son was born in the UK. I want to get his hair cut but she is refusing on the grounds that it is a cultural thing that trini boys dont have their hair cut. She has said that if I were to look into her culture, I would see that for myself. Well so far I cannot find anything that backs up her b*ll****. Can someone here answer this for me, is it Trini culture for boys to not have their hair cut until a certain age ?
Many thanks

65% of all humans who have ever lived, are alive right now, 1 billion of them are children. Sustainable?
i cut my son's hair when he was 2 after he started to talk...some thing about if i cut it before he learn to talk properly might prevent his speech from developing properlyI only took tht long bec of my parents and in-laws else i woulda done it sooner.
She must have some different culture tht i dunno about![]()

My nephews had hair cuts aged 5. The first nephew did have a little trim when he was a year then a proper cut at the barber when he was 5. He cried and told his mother he hated her. He looked cute with or without all that hair. Some did mistake him for a girl. Yes I have heard about that superstition of not cutting the little boys's hair until they've been talking properly but my sisters did this mainly for preference. I knew many boys that went around with longish hair when they were that age. Some got the cut and the odd one or two didn't and went to school in plaits/ponytail up to secondary school.
I seen plenty long time pics with the boy chirren in dress and long hair
But plenty people say abt not cutting hair until the child start talking.

Yes, I remember that one from back in the day....all I can say is.... I wished it worked in my case....
even though I cut both of my sons hair before their first birthday (so that they would look like 'little boys')...it never affected their speech.....actually....gave the first son a trim when he was three days old.... as his 'bangs' kept getting in his eyes and making him irritable....
mrxphatman .... with you son coming in from the UK ......with the heat of T&T....wouldn't he feel really hot with long hair?
....the only reason why I ask is .... overhere (Canada).... because of the extremes in temperature....as soon as it gets hot.... most parents give their boys a 'close crop'
.... Mohawks work for my grandson.... has been getting them since he was .... two

The crux is that your ex is using your lack of knowledge of her culture to back her own desires.
There is absolutely nothing in any of Trinidad's multitude of cultures that precludes cutting the boy's hair before "a certain age."
If it's religious, there's no age limit, and you'd have known at the wedding.
She's out of logical arguments so is falling back on the one thing you aren't 'up' on...her culture.

You are quite welcome.
I like to compare and contrast people of long ago with people today.
Look how simple, elegant, and sophisticated your mother looked back then.
And not tuh mention slim and trim.
Now I does see them woman and them in Trinidad with ah ton ah make up on, and dey muffin top hanging protrudingly over they low rider.

mrxphatman: I have never heard of such a practice in TT culture. Your ex is pulling a fast one on you. I cut my son's hair on his 1st birthday. In school when the teacher asked for a volunteer to read, the children used to pipe up and tell the teacher to let my son read. His speech is very good.
Oh and welcome to the chat group. As you have a Trini child you might wish to keep learning of what is going on there so you can communicate with the little lad.
