    Default Pan 'Till Ah Dead

‎2012 Pan tunes or tunes best suited for steelband arrangements that I've heard so far and like: Yes pan, as in that music which stirs up as much interest among the general populace or commands the ability to appreciate as jazz, classical or I don't know. . . farting. Anyway, here goes:

Meditation on Pan by Bob Quarless (best song so far for me)
Mystery Pan by Lennox Picou (second best song for me)
The Return of the Marsicans by Ajala (grooviest song for me)
    Underdog by Jimmy Chambers
    All Over by Fay-Ann Lyons
    Steel Pan Melody by Choklet
    De Player by Destra
Million Dollar Music by Car Wash
The Count by Debra Romain Ahmad
    Pan Turbulence by Natalie Yorke
San Fernando Has Spoken by Defosto
Only One Trinbago by Gene Toney

Seems like a lot of bands are playing "Vibes", sung by Destra, and composed by Professor and Mark Loquan.

That song has the typical changes and breaks arrangers look for when choosing a song. I understand the bands or their arrangers picking it. The thing is, we've heard this so much lately, you know; it's like a formula that Professor knows goes down well so he plugged it in again this year.

My two. It just a'ight. I'm always checking for something that has the traditional feel yet it still sounding fresh and new. Ah find Professor just drop a formula style kinda tune on we wid dat one.

Here is a list of who is playing what for Panorama 2012. Follow the link below. A nice thing about this is there is a music player on the page that plays all the tunes of choice for you. Enjoy.

Panorama semi-finals live from the Queens Park Savannah is being aired here: http://www.ctntworld.com/livestream/

So far the only large band that played is Caribbean Airlines Invaders. Tune in. North Stand is filled to capacity. I am in my bed watching this thing fullscreen on my computer with my subwoofer speaker system on. The only better seat I could have is if I were already in Trini for carnival. As a pan man and musician first, I have to abandon the Superbowl. Good luck NY Giants.

You know Wayne, Phase II is the only large band I didn't hear beat for semis. Hm. I had to go to work early the next day so I didn't stay up for the whole Panorama and I missed their performance.

Wayne, there were some flaws with the Renegades performance. I have the Panorama Finals CD and I went over all the large bands performances. The drummer was not spot on in a couple of places. I'm sure points were deduced for this. It's jarring to my ear and on a night like that you have to execute perfectly or as near to perfection as possible.

On a plus side, their arrangement was the most adventurous and interesting of anything there that night, granted, but the execution could have been better.

Also, I hate to admit it but after having the liberty to listen closely to everything again clearly at home with no distraction, I must say I generally agree with the judging. I see how Phase II could have been put first over All Stars, however, but it didn't turn out that was how they saw it. I was cursing them (the judges) the night they rendered the results, but hey, they have better seating than me, the best actually, so they get to hear everything better, things I missed where I was based in the Grand Stand.

This often happens to me when I get a chance to go back and hear the show at home on CD. I get to hear and see things I missed when I was outside listening to it live, and most times I have to give it to the judges bearing in mind judging is of course largely subjective :-)

RIP Junior Pouchet, leader of Silver Stars. Yes, he passed away. I knew he was sick but I was not expecting this. I thought he would pull through.

We seem to be going through the ....'changing of the guard' .... as the 'greats' of another era in steel band and mas.... move on.

RIP Junior... many of the current mas greats cut their eye teeth with ..... Silver Stars.
