Of the 4 murders so far, 3 of them took place in and around HDC housing schemes.

Government has to get out of this building public housing business.

Let them find some other way to pay back their financiers.

vaio...it is quite the opposite..... as places like the US discovered....when you put all of your 'economically challenged' people to live in one area (especially high density living) ..... that is a recipe for 'breeding criminals'..... it is the seperation of this group from the 'functioning society' in the past that is responsible for many of the social ills in urban centers.... governments and even NGOs are on the right track when they work towards the intigration of neighbourhoods.

In US they are moving or have moved to Section 8 where they place these kind of people in the general population. The out look not looking good so far.
Maybe I need correction? Gladly learn.

This concept is so relatively new..... it will take a few generations to work.... this generation (the first)....is still 'pushing back'.

for what it's worth----there is a view that the repatriation of criminals schooled in the USA to their former home countries is fueling the crime in these countries---eg El Salvador that now has the huge MS13 problem which was born in the USA--and we may be having some of the very fallout.
Truth does not depend on a consensus of opinion.

Basically, there is nothing wrong in public housing per se.

Major parts of Diamond Vale and Morvant were first developed as government housing for civil servants.

Because these civil servants came from the same background, and displayed the same standards of behavior, there were no major behavioral problems.

The problems in public housing, especially in places like Nelson Street, Waterhole, Rose Hill, Beverly Hills, John John, Maloney, and La Horqueta to a lesser extent, is that the government uprooted poorer people from POS and its environs, and moved them to these places.

Now where did these people live before?

They and or their parents mostly lived in what we used to call "barrack yards".

A "barrack yard" was a one way in, one way out compound, with a series of little one room shacks, that were built in a circle. Barrack yards were built by the colonialists to house the black and east indian folks that worked the estates around POS, St James and other places.

Some of the biggest fights and choppings used to take place in those barrack yards.

That is why I does just laugh when I see fools blame this government or that government for crimes. Trinidad has always had its share of hostile, ignorant people. Indeed, in 1956 there were two calypsoes by Sparrow and Caruso called "Gunslingers".

So what we have now, is basically the barrack yard mentality, that moved to the 4 storey and 9 storey mentality. Only, instead of walking miles to chop ah man, they now have cars and high powered guns.

Trini...while J'can criminals have been an issue for Toronto Police, it is misleading to refer to them in your post.

Of the 3 murders in Toronto so far, all we know is that 1 young black man was killed. We don't know his background, nor that of his killer.
1 young white man was killed. Again, no knowledge of the background of his killer.
And 1 middle-aged white lady was killed, allegedly by her middle-aged white common-law hubby.

In case Trini's info appears to extrapolate into a Toronto equals T&T murder rate scenario, consider that Toronto had 45 murders for 2011, it's lowest count in 25 years, 86 being the count in the worst year(about 4 or 5 years ago).

That's for a population of about 2.8 million.

Majik.... it is not so much the killings..... but the shootings, the stabbings.... the school violenc (you know the ones....where a whole room full of people ..... saw nothing).... in those instances... it always seem to be 'black on black' crime.

My son in law teaches at an 'inner city school' in the North West end of Toronto..... Lord, even with police patroling the halls.... and security at the doors.... the kids still stabbing up each other 'outside'.... in Scarborough it is worse....there is always a 'school lock down' because of this violence.

That's for a population of about 2.8 million.

ooops. I also made a boo boo with the racial profiling. Not a good day for me. Anyway, what I am a little worried about is how I seem to hear of a new murder every day in Toronto but the number comes up to only like 50(rounding up). Are they only counting white ppl when they report the total for the year? Maybe I should track this closely in 2012.

I don't know about Toronto, but the NYPD is notorious for under reporting crime.
