THE Norman Manley Law School retained its World Human Rights Moot Court title last week, with victory over the famed and highly respected Yale University of the United States in the final held in Pretoria, South Africa.

Last year, Norman Manley, led by top oralist Merrick Watson, a former Kingston College cricketer, beat the world by taking the title over Sydney University of Australia.

WORLD CHAMPS: The victorious Norman Manley Law School World Human Rights Moot Court champions (from left) Love Odih, Leslie Mendez and Jermaine Case.

Now, the Jamaica-based law school stayed on top of the competition, organised by the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, and the United Nations Office of Human Rights, and which saw three selected law schools from each of the United Nations regions in the semifinal round of the competition.

“I am ecstatic that Norman Manley has once again brought home the World Human Rights title,” said principal of the law school, Professor Stephen Vasciannie.

The Norman Manley Law School team comprised Jermaine Case and Love Odih, with Leslie Mendez as the reserve speaker.

We've been doing all sort of World-changing things for almost a century breds. Remember Capildeo? Here's an excerpt from NIHERST about him:

"Dr. Rudranath Capildeo is renowned for his intellectual contribution to the fields of applied mathematics and physics. He is best known, perhaps, for his interest and understanding of Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity. His work resulted in new theories, such as the “Theory of Rotation and Gravity” or “Capildeo’s Theory.”

Capildeo was a considered an outstanding scholar whose ability to manipulate mathematical techniques enabled him to solve any problem. Relativity, vector algebra and mechanics engaged the mind of this scientist. The Flexure Problem in Elasticity (Ph.D. thesis), a topic with practical implication in aerodynamics, was one of several research works written by him. He also published a book on mathematics entitled “Vector Algebra and Mechanics: Theory, Problems and Solutions”.

Regarding his interest in Einstein’s theory of relativity, Capildeo stated that his purpose in researching this theory was not to contradict, but rather fortify, complete and review areas of uncertainty.

He was also a faculty member at the University of London, eventually holding the position of Reader of Mathematics. He was also the younger brother of Simbhoonath Capildeo and uncle of Nobel Prize-winning author V.S. Naipaul and of Shiva Naipaul.
    Here's another:

"Sir Trevor McDonald OBE (born George McDonald on 16 August 1939) is a Trinidadian-British newsreader and journalist. He had a long career as a news presenter with ITN. He is notable for having been the first black[1] news reader in the UK,[2] and for having won more awards than any other British broadcaster.[3]McDonald was knighted in 1999 for his services to journalism.[4"

I just don't understand why a discussion on the comparison between an Ivy League University and one that is not.... needed a 'racial componment' to validate it.

What if the University of Australia who were the defending champs (and I am assuming would have had a different racial make up to the winning school) had beaten Yale....what direction would the discussion have taken? ....or would it not have warranted a discussion at all?

...... And here I thought the real story was that a University in the Caribbean (regardless of the racial make-up) beat the mighty Yale (regardless of the racial make-up)....guess that is not enough of a story for some.
