Today, is the shortest day of the year because today it is the first day of winter.
From tomorrow, days start to get longer until the middle of June when we have
the longest day.

Not our 'typical' late Fall/early Winter this year....generally by now we would have 'some' snow on the ground .....so far all we have had is .... a couple of light dustings and mostly rain and unusually mild temperatures.

Today, temp outside is -7C & we had about 1" snow; this is approx same temp as your deep freezer on fridge. Pulled out hat, boots, gloves & winter coat. This place is so cold even the plants need a coat. We only have about 3 months of this! What fun!

isnt a freezer at -18 to -20? Mine is.......fish will spoil quickly at -7.

A deep freezer is typically much colder than the freezer compartment in your refrigerator. -7C sounds about right for the small freezer compartment in the fridge, as most of the foods one would store their are not for long term. I would say around -18C would be sufficient for the deep freezer.

That would explain why the Mayan Calendar end of year happens to be on this date of the year; natural end of seasonal year when the sun rises at its southernmost point on the horizon, then gradually each day rising at a more northernly point on the horizon.

It's not the day that's important on this Mayan Calendar 22nd Dec 2012 thing, it's more like the year, or century.
