    Default Ban shark fin soup

Toronto has banned the sale/distribuition/consumption of shark fin soup. This is good but one only has to take a 15 min drive to Markham where it is not banned. This should be banned on the planet.

Banning one city in Canada is crude and would be very expensive to enforce. It should be banned across Canada but there would be a big fight in areas like Markham where there are many Chinese.

Because there is a relatively high demand for shark fin soup than for shark meat perhaps?

i might be wrong on this, but doesn't shark meat spoil relatively fast as compared to other fish? might not be the best thing to catch/store for mass market.

I've probably had some once maybe; I was asking a question not providing an answer.
The point being that one shark is probably going to provide pounds or tens of pounds of shark meat but only a few ounces of shark fin.

If demand is relatively higher for shark fin then some fishermen are going to look specifically for the fins only and forget the meat.

Here's a good article that explains why only fin is collected.

The soup is $20/bowl so they throw away shark to save space on ship. :-(
Fins contain mercury as shark is a predator :-(
Fins have no nutritional value. :-(
Removing sharks at 100 mill/yr can have severe impact to ecosystem. :-(
Eating shark fin soup is a status symbol. I had it once at a Chinese wedding- tastes like noodles. Nothing special. :-(
