    'Flaws in secondary school system'

    http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/_Flaws_in_secondary_school_system_-128543248.html

The quality of the country's tertiary education is being threatened by the deficiencies of the secondary school system.
That opening line pretty much 'sums things up'.

While the President did not point out particular causes and solutions, he at least identified the problem(s) in a nutshell.

"We cannot hope to be regarded as anything but a lower level Third World nation if we are content to barely make a passing grade." ........

......"Too much effort has to be expended at university at bridging the gap from one level to the other. We must be careful to free up the tertiary education system, finding ways and means of insisting upon the stretch that is necessary for better performance throughout our secondary schools system," he said.

"To some extent, the deficiencies at secondary level find their way into the tertiary system, and remedial work has to be undertaken at that level, thereby doing damage to the thrust and objectives of tertiary education."
Richards said while the emphasis has been on increasing the number of pupils who have access to secondary school education, attention has to be paid to the quality of the education pupils are receiving at this level.
    'quality' is the keyword there.

I hope the President can use his influence to start the process of improving the secondary school system. Of course, that cannot be done without first reviewing the primary and pre school systems. This would not be an easy task for the Ministry of Ed since educators at all levels need to coordinate their efforts.
It may take a generation to fix, so we need to start doing something about it asap.
I wanted to ask God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

You're right Kemist. I would like an article like this but 'Flaws in primary school system'. There are students at the secondary level who cannot read or write or do basic math. A lot of them struggle with diagnosed and undiagnosed learning disabilities and they're just "lost" in the system with no help. I really feel sorry for these kids.

Part of the problem is that the entry requirements for tertiary education are not so much merit/ability/qualification, but financial.

At the so-called tertiary level, firstly one has to distinguish firstly purely Educational institutions, from Professional training.

Tertiary education should be provided freely to the MOST QUALIFIED individuals in an effort uplift future generations.

If insufficient QUALIFIED individuals are not being produced by the secondary and primary systems then these systems need to be upgraded.

True influence comes not from a moment's eloquence, nor from any chosen word,
but from the accumulation of a lifetime's thoughts stored up. He who influences the
thought of his times, influences all the times that follow. He has made his impress
on eternity. This is undoubtedly true. I know of one girl who insisted on taking
various science subjects for her A-levels. Her head-teacher argued strongly that
she should not but she was adamant and scored a C and two Ds. As a result of
this - just one pupil - the school fell 50 places in the league tables.
To those who understand, no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible.
    Nathaniel Branden, "Social Metaphysics."

Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is; treat a man as he can and should be and he
will become as he can and should be..

    -Goethe

I shall be glad to hear from you, since questions have have always interested me; questions, not
debates - I have given those up long ago. Life itself is a quotation.

Without education, we are in a horrible and deadly danger,
    of taking educated people seriously
