    Default Cycling as an exercise...

Bicycles used o be a simple means of transport but they have now overtaken
cars as the ultimate style statement. Remember school days, going to the Oval
to watch the champions compete? Recapture those days and write about them.

There was only one reason to ride a bike: to go slightly further and faster
than you can on foot. Expressing yourself as a cyclist meant choosing
how to keep your trousers out of the chain. Later on when manufacturers
discovered that rewardingly large numbers of cyclists could be persuaded to
pay premium for bikes that make some kind of statement about who we
really were. It was wonderful ...

No gyms, aerobic, enviromental or life style conditions to muddy the cycle path.
It started out as a keep-fit thing cycling to work and back. Rather than have
a shower when he gets to the office, he goes and makes every one a cup of tea.

Cycling is a simple, inexpensive mode of transportation particularly important to young people. It does require that the transportation infrastructure is designed for it.

This is not the case in Trinidad. Cycling in Trinidad as a mode of transportation is downright dangerous.

I was in Copenhagen recently and was surprise to see how many people use it as their basic transport. Per capita they probably own more bikes than China. They have special bike lanes which pedestrians and other traffic respect. Also, many people don't lock their bikes outside their homes or where they go and no one steals them.

Well There might be a fine example ! Bikes are relatively simple technology and suitable as a cheap option for transportation for those able to use it (meanwhile of course it provides a form of exercise, which is the subject of the thread); it is something that an advanced society would want to have incorporated into infrastructural layout.

It is a form of exercise and I did not see fat locals, but then again, food is so expensive that they cannot afford to stuff their face like us in north america.

I use to ride everywhere. Remember: patching a tire using an old inner tube, Adjusting brakes and gears.

10 speed racing bikes were common; I think those were the best. Today's bikes are made more for comfort and take too much effort to ride. My kids are not careful with bikes (they don't belive in locks) so now I am bike less. :-(

I jog 4.4 miles (7K) one day and the next day I ride my bicycle the same distance or a little more..This is my exercise regimen for each month depending on my schedule.

Maybe you could do a little less jogging and a bit more cycyling as you get older. That impacting and shock absorbsion, you know?
