Default Killed for the colour of his skin

Stephen Lawrence was murdered in 1993, because of the colour of his skin. Luke Knight, Gary Dobson and Neil Acourt were found not guilty because of insufficient evidence. Now there is to be a retrial after 18 years. On 22nd April 1993 just after 10.35 in the evening, a young man Stephen Lawrence, was waiting at a bus stop with a close friend Duwayne Brooks.
As they waited for the bus a group of white youths crossed the road towards them. One of the youths used abuse racial language.. This was followed by a sudden and immediate attack. Duwayne manged to make his escape, but Stephen Laurence was stabbed twice. he collapsed on the pavement. Died shortly afterwards in hospital.

For 18 years, Stephen Lawrence's parents have been denied justice for their
murdered son. Yesterday, they were given hope.

The A-level student six years after he was killed his parents divorced,
but remained united in the fight for justice. Both were appointed OBEs
in 2002 for services to the community relations. Dobson and Norris,
have been in custody since last year, but the case could not be reported
until now, faces a re-trial in November.

I agree with you 200%. But we cannot stop there. Racism is a multi headed hydra. Killing people because they belong to a different ethnic group is only the tip of the iceberg. Most people can understand that killing people because of the colour of their skin is wrong. But what about the more subtle forms of racism, the one that leads us to stick to our own, walk on eggshells whenever we interact with members of other groups, and accuse them of racism at the first opportunity? There are deep set issues here.

The tendency to feel positively inclined towards people who look like us and negatively inclined towards others, presented an evolutionary advantage, and is therefore ingrained, according to some theories. Well there is no evolutionary advantage now. We must be careful what we teach our children. They will pick up on the subtlest of signs.

Here is an upsetting story from a friend of mine, a second generation Guyanese red girl in London some years ago, who told me that whenever the doorbell rang, she would look outside the window to see who was there, and if she could not make out who it was, tense up if it was a black male, and relax if it was a white male... And she was asking me "is there something wrong with me"?

Today, that problem is growing worse - and so every other form of racism. Reminiscent of the worst days in the most backward countries of the nineteenth-century Europe. Private racism is not legal issue - and can be fought only by private means, such as economic boycott or social ostracism.

Seems that throughout Europe the far right is cashing in on widespread resentment against Muslims. Now Islam is a religion, not a race, so those who object to Islam are not necessarily racist, but in a European context where Muslims are mostly members of minority ethnic groups it is all very confused.

When I was last in London for a few months (last year) I did not really notice much change in attitudes, but I guess I was interacting within an integrated multi-ethnic and multi-national sub-group where racist attitudes are largely absent, so this is not necessarily representative. Would you say racism in the UK is on the increase? I have heard Jamaicans say "thank God for the Muslims, everybody hates them so much that by contrast we have become socially acceptable..."

I also spent some time in France, where the hunting season for "arabs" is open year round, and blatant overt racist comments are heard daily, and where a government-sponsored "debate on national identity" opened the floodgates to a diarrhea of xenophobia. Things are definitely getting worse there.

The growth of racism in a mixed economy keeps with growth of government controls. Racism was strongest in the more controlled economies, such as Russia and Germany, and weakest in England, the then freest country of Europe. When men began to be indoctrinated once more with notion that the individual possesses no rights, thy supremacy and unlimited power belongs to a body or group - the inevitable consequence was that men began to gravitate toward such group or another. Particularly for people of limited intelligence.

I had never looked at it that way. Interesting take on the issue.

Stephen Lawrence accused deny murder. Gary Dobson 36, and David Norris 34,
plead not guilty at the Old Bailey via video link. Lawrence was a black 18-year-
old A-level student who was stabbed to death in Eltham, south-east London, in
    April 1993.
