    Default Bidet discussion thread

    I've noticed not many people here in the US have bidet. Even in high-end places, they are not common. By contrast, bidet seem to be fairly popular in mid-to-high-income households across the globe (T&T included).

    So let's discuss it. Why is there such a difference. What is the best type of bidet.

    edit: Forgot to include a poll.
    Please state whether or not you own a bidet in your reply.

    When I was growing up bidet was the latest 'fashion' in bathroom fixtures. Tht was the time of the pink and blue and green coloured bathroom sets.
    Nowdays people renovate and do away with it.

    Its common in Europe.

    People willingly give up their bidets? Most folks I know with them just can't bear the thought of going back to plain TP wiping.

    Just bought myself one of these things. Seems great except for it not having a warm water inlet... and winter is approaching.

    If you look at the history of the Bidet nowhere will you find that it was common practice to bathe occasionally. Queen Elizabeth the First boasted, "I take a bath once a month whether I ned it or not." Just think about the amount of pseudo mobile fish markets floating around in full bloom. I guess that one frustrated Frenchman in keeping with his culture was fed up of wearing a gas mask in doing his nightly duties. So as they say, Necessity is the mohter of inventions and VOILA, the bidet was born. The ladies were joyful and the gas mask companies went bankrupt. The morale: If you shower every day you don't need one.

    ... Bidet .... as the name suggest it did originate in Europe ...because of the European influence on the Caribbean they did find their way down to the Caribbean as well (with the migration of the Europeans).

    You are correct, they are not 'common' in North America at all ..... even in the higher end homes ..... it is only in the last two decades that they started 'popping up' at Home Shows ....most people who install them do so ..... just for 'prestigue'. I think they are well suited in Hospitals and should be installed in every hospital patients bathroom.

    Bidets aren't universal. Most people I've met in the UK don't even know what a bidet is. It isn't even commonly found in Home fittings shops or displays in the UK. I don't have one. No room for it. We didn't have one in T&T, small bathroom though it was not unusual to find some family and friends who had one there. I know it is possible to have a combination toilet/bidet, I hear these are electric with directed water squirts. I can't tell you where to get one except Japan.

    No I do not have a bidet.

    Thanks BW for pointing out that point about warm water, I'll have to keep that in mind for the future.

    Before we had toilet paper what did people do? simple - water; and probably a rag.
    Basically you had to take a half-bath thing every time you used the toilet;
    In fact that doesn't sound so bad now does it; it makes sense. If you are HOME. It is cleaner that just using toilet paper. Better hygene.

    So I hope by the time I retire I will have a bidet/bidets installed in my house; save me money and trips to the grocery for toilet paper.
