    Default The Power of words

The point is, language connects us to each other.
It was a lesson I learned from my deceased mother
when we were having a discussion. She turned to
me and said, 'Be careful what you say. Words are
powerful things.' She was right, as usual, it is easy
to say something in anger and say late, 'I did not
mean it. I was just angry.'
To those who understand, no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible.
    Nathaniel Branden, "Social Metaphysics."

Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is; treat a man as he can and should be and he
will become as he can and should be..

    -Goethe

I shall be glad to hear from you, since questions have have always interested me; questions, not
debates - I have given those up long ago. Life itself is a quotation.

    Room
    by Emma Donoghue
Jack lives with his Ma in Room, an oppressive space
with a locked door and sky-light. He loves the TV
cartoon characters that he calls his friends, but he
knows that nothing is real except him, Ma and Room.
Then Ma admits there's another world outside.
Room - inspired by the true story of Elisabeth Fritzl,
imprisoned by her father - is the story of mother and
son whose love lets them survive the impossible.
To those who understand, no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible.
    Nathaniel Branden, "Social Metaphysics."

Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is; treat a man as he can and should be and he

    The Secret Rose Garden (1317)

From 'The Perfect Face of the Beloved'

What is the nature of the eye and the lip? Let
us consider ... coquettish and intoxicating glances shine
from His eye. The essence of existence issues from His
ruby lips. Hearts burn with desire because of His eye,
and we are healed again by the smile on His lips.
Must be reckoned among the greatest mystical poetry of
    any time or place.
To those who understand, no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible.
    Nathaniel Branden, "Social Metaphysics."

Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is; treat a man as he can and should be and he

    Caribou Island
    by David Vann

On a small island in remote Alaska, Irene
and her husband Gary are building a cabin,
to Gary's delight and Irene's great disappoint-
ment. On the mainland their daughter Rhoda
and son Mark are both wrapped up in dramas
of their own, too busy to notice their parents
marriage unravelling. A bleak, but brilliant novel,
a fascinating exposition of terrible things that
people supposedly in love can do to one an other.
To those who understand, no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible.

    The magic of words. Magicians use humour and empathy to lower your guard;
one revelation begins if you sympathise with a magician you will enjoy yourself
more and be less vigilant about catching the secrets.
    When negotiating
inter personal relationships, do as the magician and disarm with charm.

Words are funny things - they can make you laugh or wince
or both at the same time. They can start out meaning one
thing like obnoxious, (open to hurt, vulnerable) and end
up meaning the opposite, (hateful and offensive). They can
mean different things at the same time like funny ha-ha or
funny peculiar, can mean different things in different countries,
and can be pronounced differently in different regions at
different times. They can change their spelling to differentiate
between the senses. Words and their wilsome ways. Droll and
    learned.
To those who understand, no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible.

Well it depends upon person to person. When ever i read i keep on arguing with myself that how could this be possible and what what would be the logic behind that.

One only has to read the deceptively plain, colloquial style of George Orwell,
or hear the rousing, often beautiful oratory of Winston Churchill to recognise
at once that the ability to use good English accurately carries tremendous power
    to enlighten, enliven and move.

Are we the only nation who says 'sorry' and why do we say it so very often?
Englishness is an ancient and powerful concept . Expressions as nice, common,
posh, cuppa, muddle, merry, innit, clever, quite, twit, slag, society and more,
reveals the strange and wonderful cornerstones of modern English.

    SILK ...by Rupert James

Christine Fairbrother is a top barrister, the scourge of divorce courts, and have her sights on becoming a QC, or 'taking silk'. Her daughter Isabella is a design graduate with a head full of dreams and ambitions - she also has a terrible weakness for wholly inappropriate men. Money, sex and power, plus champagne - all the ingredients for a splendid London romp! Exciting stuff...

Peter Mark Roget, polymath, eccentric and synonym afficionado, was a complicated man.
He was a scholar obsessed with his work, yet he had an undeniable allure that endeared
him to his contemporaries, not least a host of female admirers. Notably, he made lists.
He longed for order in his chaotic world. His father's premature death and the mental
illness of his mother and sister threatened to plunge him into a darkness of his own mad-
ness. So at the age of eight, he started to make lists. From heavenly bodies to animals,
vegetables and minerals, young Roget began his quest to put everything in its righful
place, one word at a time. Despite hardship, he lived a colourful life. And of course brought
to life that book (Thesaurus) that would become synonymous with synonyms. Exploring the
power of words and the legacy of a genuis.

Say Her Name by Francisco Goldman

Goldman, a journalist and novelist who was 23 years older than his wife, puts the story together like
and intricate moasic. The book starts a years after his wife's death. This book is called fiction, but
it reads like an guished, yet beautiful, memoir of lost love. Must read...

    Pleasures and Sorrows of Work

    by Alain de Botton

The best selling philosophy/travel writer Alain de Botton explores
the joys and perils of the modern workplace, evoking what other
people do all day (or night) to help the frenzied functioning of the
modern world. With a philosophical eye and characteristic wit and
wisdom he takes around a deliberately eclectic range of occupations
accountacy to logistics to counselling to engineering in order to
discover exactly what makes the union of individual person to their
job so fulfilling or so soul-destroying destroying. Interesting ...

John Donne: Man of flesh and Spirit
    David L. Edwards

John Donne was a contradictory figure who fascinates
because he was a man battered by sex, and by God.
A poet of love, a peerless writer of the spiritual
journey, a stalwart churchman and a great preacher.
A compelling new portrait emerges in this extraordinary
new biography in which David Edwards ranges across
all of Donne's writings, including the critically neglected
    sermons.
    A superb historical riddle.
