      Default Lecture on "Hookup" culture

In light of the recent discussions on this forum on sex, pornography, etc. I thought it necessary to post this link. This lecture touches on pretty much some of what our discussions and mindset should be when dealing with this issue. I particularly liked how as her lecture progressed she spoke about how other discussions incorporating religious/spiritual and freethought (incl agnostic, atheist or non-theist) groups and philosophies can be incorporated so as to move towards a different, expanded way of thinking and thus a different society. Most importantly, her analysis of the issue highlighted a need for proper communication and dialogue BEFORE as well as during any kind of social interaction.

This is the kind of discussion (and maturity) I wish I could see here in TnT

Oh this ought to be good

Please, show me how (cause I kinda slow that way and last I knew religious zealots do not encourage debate or divergence of views, I do, regardless of outcome, but what do I know?)

"Lisa has found that students want sex to be pleasurable, empowering, or meaningful. But, alas, they seem to have difficulty achieving any one of those things in great measure. The culprit, she concludes, isn't hooking up, it's hook up culture. When a hook up culture dominates, all other ways of being sexual are repressed, and that leaves many students involuntarily celibate or having sex they don't really want. The solution: an opening up of sexual options that allow students to truly, genuinely explore their own sexualities safely."

Including, the option of saying "no." The problem that has arisen with the struggle to (re)liberate sexuality from the repressive, constraints imposed by patriarchal mores is that it morphed into a different form of patriarchal authoritarianism in which one was now expected to be sexually active before marriage and without emotions or ties which is not what the stuggle was about at all (this is what, as she pointed out, lead to the "friends with benefits" being done minus the "friends" part). It was and should ideally be about ALL the various options, including the old conservative morality, being available and without judgement.
