Minister: Govt to probe Tobago housing projects

Housing Minister Roodal Moonilal says Government will launch an investigation into the Tobago housing projects and examine the role of the Housing Development Corporation in developing housing on the island.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Moonilal said it has been brought to his attention there is a housing project in Tobago where houses have been built, but these houses were never distributed to homeowners and were now in a state of disrepair.

Moonilal also said he found it an anomaly that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) which is responsible for the housing construction programme in Trinidad and Tobago, was not part of this project which was under the purview of UDeCOTT and the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).

He said Government was concerned about UDeCOTT's role, "not only in Trinidad but in Tobago because there may be another issue with UDeCOTT's involvement in Tobago that we'll have to look at and these are matters that I intend to clarify with the Chief Secretary and the THA in the coming days".

"We have a matter to investigate now with the housing situation in Tobago because... there is some doubt as to some role of the HDC in Tobago. It is my understanding that UDeCOTT was involved in housing in Tobago in collaboration with the THA and we are looking at that now to see what is the responsibility of the HDC.

"I intend to return to Tobago in a few days to look at the housing in particular as it pertains to our role and I intend to approach the THA and Mr London to discuss it," said Moonilal.

"We have received complaints that the houses are abandoned and in a state of disrepair like in Trinidad, they have not been occupied and we are still researching to look at how much it is costing, how much it has cost the taxpayers," said Moonilal.

"I've also received reports from the Members of Parliament in Tobago that citizens in Tobago have been promised homes in some cases and there were commitments to them to get the homes and I'm investigating a particular report now where we have on paper a situation where homes have been allocated to citizens but when you go to the homes, I'm told, they are all empty, unoccupied and in a state of disrepair, it is something we will look at," said Moonilal.

Asked about provisions for housing in the 2011 National Budget which would be read on Wednesday, Moonilal said Government will not set a particular number of units as the People's National Movement people did.

"You end up pushing and fast tracking and you end up having shoddy work. You end up with corruption, you end up with waste and you have to repair homes for over $100 million now. But having said that, we are going to embark very soon on another construction cycle and we are looking at constructing 6,000 units for the next year," he said.

Before my August break, I gave glimpses of my growing impatience with the new Government (and I am not referring to it as "new" after today). It is now more than three months since it took office. It is time to assume the demeanour of a Government. The time for settling in is up.

If the Prime Minister wished to walk in a parade in New York, the West Indian Day parade, preceding mas' on the Parkway, was the thing to do. I understand that the current US Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago will be doing just that tomorrow.

Many of us are also satisfied that the $3,000 per month pension is a sham when measured against the relevant campaign promises. The time is also up, Partnership, for blaming the PNM. The country gave you an impressive mandate to fix things and the tolerance fuse of the country is short, growing shorter each time it takes the risk of trying something different and is subsequently bitterly disappointed.

No less a person than President Obama, who set the world alight, has seen his ratings decline even though it is acknowledged that he inherited many difficulties created by his predecessor. In a recent column in the New York Times, Maureen Dowd said this and it constitutes advice the Partnership should heed: "Obama is the victim of the elevated expectations he so skillfully created in 2008. He came as a redeemer and didn't redeem. Nothing bums out a nation that blows with the wind like a self imposed messiah who disappoints."

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/comme...102233714.html

Well said Mr. Daly, sadly it seem that the PP supporters will not agree with you, they still boasting about Kamla walking in the market in Tobago and people waving, the still boasting about laptops that missed the opening of school date, they still boasting about schools being repaired when we now hearing over 13 of them not opening for the first day of the school term.

I do hope all the PP supporters on here take a good slow read of this article and understand what really going on, as the cries of the population getting louder against the PProfl

“The country will find out by Wednesday,” he said when questioned on the issue. Asked if the Budget will address the issue, he said, “Yes, yes.”

The People’s Partnership coalition during the election campaign promised to repeal the tax legislation. From the moment he brandished a rubber snake during his first appearance on a campaign platform, it was clear that Justice Herbert Volney was going to be the joker in the UNC pack. Plummeting from the bench to the arena in one fell swoop, he made it clear that in his case, normal rules did not apply and there were no holds barred.

It should not come as a surprise, then, that it was Mr Volney who called last week for public hangings in Woodford Square.

Some of us may find it disturbing that the country has a Minister of Justice with such medieval ideas about his portfolio. Still, whatever your opinion of Mr Volney, at least you know where you are with him.

You can't say the same for the Prime Minister, however. Mr Volney shares more than just not only his enthusiasm for hanging with Works Minister Jack Warner. In his previous occupation he too was accustomed to speaking his mind, and has a highly developed talent for polarising opinion. You either love him or you think he's a complete idiot. But, given the way he has always courted controversy, it's unlikely that that troubles him.

They cant get any juicy pics nada, while the talk is the party going on real nice out there is all kind of walks on the beach holding hands, wives and g/friends fly over, the thing going real nice with them in Tobago. Like its cabinet vacation #2, after all the fun and games in New York, they have moved on to a local setting Tobago I wonder where next the traveling band of misfit will go?

Then we have the PM telling us taxpayers' money is being well spent on the Government's four-day workshop in Tobago, really Kamla that is great to know but you once again left out a very important detail how much is this trip costing the taxpayers of T&T, it would of been nice if you included that little detail for all of us. How much was all these big consultants paid to come talk shop, please inform us since its our money you are spending and not yours, its only fair you were a strong advocate in demanding the PNM give us all the details ,well what is good for the PNM has to be also good for your administration, so let us know.
MEMBERS of the media were yesterday thrown out in the rain from the Coco Reef Resort and Spa in Tobago on the very day the Cabinet buckled down to a workshop, ironically dealing with media relations.
Members of the media who waited in the lobby of the resort for several hours, were told by hotel staff that there had been complaints by hotel guests, some of whom had cameras and were yesterday spotted taking photos of Government ministers.

The more appropriate headline s/b "Mouth-frothers gone wild" lol, anyway this opinion by letter writer Brian Stone is a good read. I find it is an almost perfect description of our forum mouth-frothers who nit pick on every action the PP govt take or do not take, or those frothers who critisize to prove they are independent thinkers and not blind supporters, or the frothers who used these irrelevant critisizms to say they going back PNM and then begin a barrage of illogical and unreadable critizisms, and finally the frothers who have just gone mad and not ashamed to to torture us with their madness.
I have highlighted the main points to make it easy for the frothers who have short attention span (ADD). :)

Shocking accusations gone wildSaturday, September 4 2010
THE EDITOR: I address my comments to those of you who worked hard and supported the PP during elections. There can be no greater reward than success.
Collectively, the PP supporters stood their ground in defence of the obscene accusations hurled by Manning’s PNM. The emperor is defeated, the prophetess gone, replaced by a government of, by, and for the people. Congratulations!
What is shocking is the unwarranted accusations against the PP initiated by some supporters, and others, that defended the PP only a few months ago. Fortunately, it’s only a handful of supporters “gone wild”, and although they are a minuscule minority, I am really shocked at the unsubstantiated accusations disguised as innocent criticism.
The truth is clearly documented that free expression is encouraged by our current administration. However, there is a significant difference between criticism and accusation. In fact, the accusers of malfeasance deny themselves legitimacy in the absence of evidence. It is also documented that accusers on various blogs claim to have proof of wrongdoing, and when challenged to produce the evidence, fail to do so. Naturally, therefore, the accusers, by their own hand, incriminate themselves as fakes playing a con game.
What is equally shocking, is their adherence to the presumption, conditioned by the PNM failures, of corruption, and thievery they fought against, that the PP government wolves are in PNM sheep’s clothing. What utter nonsense, and self inflicted obscurity caused by persons who are so cynical and pessimistic that no one can do right without imperfection. Imagine that the PP government is accused of wrongs not yet committed. That equates to absolute guilt for a crime that did not happen, but perhaps may occur, then probably not. Is this not ignorance? Nonsensical logic in the best of terms.
Accusations without evidence is not criticism, it is pure adultery that serves no positive purpose in service to the people.
These few “supporters gone wild” remain so cloaked in their misguided psuedo-faithfulness to country over party, that they fail to supply building blocks to help our government build our nation. Supporters gone wild is a befitting description, and I recommend they return to responsible criticism, rather than prophecies and predictions of accusations gone wild! Prophetesses are not welcome here.
Criticism is healthy; accusations without evidence is malignant! Please act responsibly, we, the people, have a country to build and a nation to care for.
Brian Stone

I noticed the Minister of National security said he is concerned about human trafficking which is evolving at an "uncomfortable rate" in this country. He said there have also been numerous reports circulating throughout the global media concerning trafficking of nationals of Trinidad and Tobago. He told the Express that there are over 500 persons who have gone missing in this country, although there was no information to suggest the majority of them were victims of human trafficking.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also added that she met with US Ambassador Beatrice Wilkinson on Wednesday, and questioned why this country was ranked on tier two with respect to trafficking of persons when there was no statistical evidence of persons trafficked. She said she was told because of the absence of the legislation to deal with human trafficking, this country was given a bad rating.

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/...102120339.html

If the Minister of National security claimed that there was no information to suggest the majority of cases where people were missing are victims of human trafficking, how do they know there is a problem? Is it because the USA gave us a bad rating for not having the right legislation, or do we have a real problem of human trafficking in T&T?

To: The Moderators--I used the political forum because it is the moist active.

I would like us all to assist Vision on a Mission on as bigzack called it TTONLINE FUND for Vision on a Mission.

This organisation is doing tremendous work in rehabilitation and re-admission of convicted persons back into the Trinidad society and thereby contributing to the reduction in Crime.

I have no idea how we can structure contributions so anyone can suggest a means. I would really like this to materialise and it does not require anyone to say how much they contributing--any amount will do.

I believe that this is a laudable effort that should be supported. I hope that TTONLINE agrees and will support this effort.

Your participation would be most welcome.
According to the statistics from the central bank the money supply looks like it has been increasing by some 10% per annum.
Since the population is not growing any where near that fast, it means the money supply per capita is increasing by about 10% per annum, and hence it is no surprise that we have near 10% inflation.

Members of a newly-formed association, comprising some 500 People’s Partnership activists, are calling on the party to provide them with jobs. Members of the the group—Social Ground Troops Association—feel they were sidelined for jobs after the PP came into Government. “The PP has not lived up to the mandate that was given to it,” UNC activist Juliet Davy said during a press conference at the Communication Workers’ headquarters, Henry Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. “Their mandate was not only to fix crime but to continue the process of removing middle management PNM operatives who would be on state boards and they have not done that,” she said.
