Citizens of a country must participate in the political process to ensure that the Government of the day act in the best interest of all citizens. It is sad that most citizens have not participated in the political process and by their indifference gave rise to “Doctor Politics” with Manning and Panday as the most recent practitioners of this obsolete approach to governance.
I think every citizen of this country is in agreement with the need for a new approach to politics and Governance. To the credit of Mr. Dookeran, prior to the last general elections he has been making all the right noise in this regard. I fear however, that his voice might be lost in a partnership which is yet to prove its longevity and, is still in the embryonic stage of its development. The question all political observers are anxiously anticipating an answer to is: How accommodative is the UNC fraction of the PP to the COP’s call for the practice of a new brand of politics? This issue represents a cause for great concern to the leadership of the PP and the population at large. Does the PP possess the political stamina to endure the vicissitude of the cut and thrust of political life in Government? The jury is out on this one and, your guess is as good as mine.
Based on what is published in the media one is compelled to question if the “man in the street” understands what constitutes this new politics. Some seem to think that the presence of a different party as the Government of this country represents that new approach. I hold the view that this is simplistic and premature. I will judge this administration on their performance. That is to say, what new or different approaches have they adopted to governance? The current controversy between the Justice Minister and the Chief Justice provides the Prime Minister with an opportunity to send a strong signal to her ministers that she is in control. That Volney should so publicly vilify and lacerate the Chief Justice soon after deliberations in Tobago; which were intended to curb outburst of this nature, bespeaks a spirit of recalcitrance that the Prime Minister must with alacrity deal with. I will also look to see what difference policies are implemented and the difference these make in the lives of citizens. I will also look to see their tolerance of criticism and objections to their policies and plans by pressure groups. In other words I will have to wait and see.
