40 Windows Apps contaminated by bugs
Hot off the press, see link to read about 40 Windows Apps infected:
Update: 40 Windows apps contain critical bug, says researcher.: Separate patch required for each, says HD Moore, who declines to name affected software:
Computerworld - About 40 different Windows applications contain a critical flaw that can be used by attackers to hijack PCs and infect them with malware, a security researcher said Wednesday.

The bug was patched by Apple in its iTunes software for Windows four months ago, but remains in more than three dozen other Windows programs, said HD Moore, chief security officer at Rapid7 and creator of the open-source Metasploit penetration-testing toolkit. Moore did not reveal the names of the vulnerable applications or their makers, however.

Each affected program will have to be patched separately.

Actually, the issue affects far more than just 40 windows apps. The last official count puts the number at over 200 and they haven't finished their assessment yet.

The latest on this software bug issue is that exploit code for this latest vulnerability has now been included in the Metasploit hacking toolkit.

Attacks which utilize these vulnerable applications are now only weeks away at most.

Here's the very latest:
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9181518/Microsoft_releases_tool_to_block_DLL_load_hijackin g_attacks?taxonomyId=17&pageNumber=1

Microsoft has releases a blocking tool that will allow companies to block known exploits of this vulnerability. Also, some researchers are claiming that this 'new' bug may not actually be so new after all; they say that it was known about as far back as 2000! It would be quite hilarious if that turned out to be true.
