Hi Guys,

I've created an offline map for the south region. This is for use with the google maps app. To use it install offline maps from cydia and copy the files in the archive over to the maps folder. The offline maps application provides instructions. So far it works perfectly with no gprs/wifi connection.

You may use http://i-funbox.com/ to put the files on the phone.

http://www.haventt.net/south.png

Get the map here (http://www.haventt.net/south.zip)

I'll eventually cache the whole of Trinidad & Tobago but for now i did this as a test to see how it was done and thought some other people could use it since it's fully functional.

FYI: These maps are the property of Google therefore selling them are against the law.

wolfie, is it the same procedure if using itunes instead of cydia?

Randall

This method is now outdated.

You should now use xgps (via cydia) and head on over to http://xgps.xwaves.net where you can download their manager program that lets you cache content.

Original iPhone (and original iPod Touch) support has been dropped.

Randall

It looks great. I think i'll upgrade to the 4th Gen when it comes out because of this update.

Most of the features provided by jailbroken software is now being done natively.

Good stuff

Randall

The unlocked version should be around the same price as the 3gs now depending on supply and demand ofc...

Randall

All the apps, gps, etc work in Trinidad.

The only thing that will give some problems is PUSH on a jailbroken phone.

If you have a factory unlocked phone, everything will work as Amzz pointed out.

do you have to sign up for a data plan? all I see is some providers have blackberry data.. do you use that or something else?

Randall
06-07-2010, 07:25 PM
You just use whatever data service TSTT or Digicel provides for generic phones.

For example in the case of TSTT it's GPRS activated on the sim side with client proxy settings in the iphone network settings.

BW
06-07-2010, 07:30 PM

So is data sim using in it?

Acid
06-07-2010, 07:47 PM
It is a normal SIM (you can make calls as well as use data).

Since you are already paying for data you can tether your phone (USB or wireless) with your computer so it can use the internet connection from the phone.

Based on what I've read, the new iPhone 4 doesn't support a regular sim card.

It uses a micro sim card instead, just like the iPad. I'm not aware that TSTT is currently supplying micro sim technology, so I don't know how one would be able to use this phone in Trinidad.

Randall
06-08-2010, 03:37 PM
The cards can be cut to fit by taking off the excess plastic.

As far as i've read once the circuit board on the sim is not tampered with, it should work.

$599.00 & $699.00 at the Apple Store for the 16GB & 32GB respectively. However, you'd need to get it unlocked and I don't know who does that. Apple doesn't.

Randall
06-09-2010, 03:31 PM
Have to wait for the unlocking community to hack the 4.0 baseband on the 4.0 hardware.

Or just pay extra around ~$900.00 usd for a factory unlocked.

fed up with the way Apple handles major faulty hardware complaints; deny, evade, release new version correcting problem that they claim never existed and you will not get warrantied replacement/upgrade.. after all a batch of 200+ users with same glitch/failure are not worthy of redress, that is less than .1% who will probably be quite happy paying for the next iteration of their product for the improved features

not me eh .. 2nd-4th gen of any new product design after it has been released and tested properly by the populace of willing guineapigs

in a moment of weakness though I did install iOS4 ..and liked it untill I found that most of my apps are not ready for it so I rolled back to iOS3.1.2 really not Apple's fault there

If the issue with the new Iphone isn't a big deal as Apple is saying, then why are they giving away the cases for free? If they do that, then they are actually acknowledging that it IS a big deal.

Well, I don't like that kind of thinking. They are acting to please the customer, even if the customer's perceptions and demands aren't in line with what the company believes.

Happens at restaurants and other service industries all the time.

This is just good customer service, because they love us.

Thanks to some serious work by @comex (http://twitter.com/comex), you can now jailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad right from MobileSafari — no PC or Mac needed!

Just visit http://jailbreakme.com (http://jailbreakme.com/) on your device.

For those needing a carrier unlock, use the existing ultrasn0w in Cydia on your iPhone3G or iPhone3GS. After a short testing period, we’ll push out the iPhone4 version.

Note: The earlier MMS and Facetime issues have been fixed. If you already ran the version with those problems, launch Cydia and accept its offer to update.

I can confirm this works, and I now have my 3GS able to make/receive calls from my bMobile number.

Infamous iPhone hacker Planetbeing (android on iPhone fame (http://www.gadgetsdna.com/google-android-ported-to-apple-iphone/2457/)) has developed an application Signal for your jailbroken iPhone 4 (http://www.gadgetsdna.com/how-to-jailbreak-iphone-ipod-touch-and-ipad-using-jailbreakme-com/5198/), iPhone 3G (http://www.gadgetsdna.com/how-to-jailbreak-ios-4-1-iphone-3gipod-touch-2g-with-redsn0w-0-9-5/4675/), and iPhone 3GS (http://www.gadgetsdna.com/this-iphone-3g-3gs-2g-jailbreak-software-pushes-trojan-virus/5138/) that displays the real signal strength, data about your cell reception and plots a map of your nearby cell towers.

http://www.gadgetsdna.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/signal-app-att-333x500.png

Signal Cydia app compares coverage between different carriers, test antenna (http://www.gadgetsdna.com/iphone-4-antenna-issue-is-not-rumor-hysteria-admits-steve-jobs/4409/) vulnerabilities on your iPhone, or determine your nearest cell tower. Information such as scrambling codes of neighboring cells and downlink and uplink frequencies can be very useful for Radio engineers while testing the iPhone device in the field. Check out the signal strength among of Rogers Vs AT&T in images:

http://www.gadgetsdna.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/signal-app_rogers-333x500.png

Why do you need it? Well, sometimes iPhone users get frustrated when they are unable to connect because the signal strength of hotspot or community WiFi networks (http://www.gadgetsdna.com/wi-fi-sync-wirelessly-sync-iphone-ipod-touch-with-itunes/2564/) is too weak and not strong enough to connect. Signal iPhone app will allow you to measure or check real signal strength (http://www.gadgetsdna.com/how-to-check-signal-strength-of-android-phone/1120/) that will eventually help you in taking a decision to switch to a different carrier or not. Handy! Isn’t? Check out the Video below:
