I am tired if this inept, slothful, misinformed, misleading, substandard work ethic in what is supposed to be one of the two serious newspapers in Trinidad and Tobago. We can't get a newspaper article right, and yet we expect to manage oil and gas resources on a world market.

In this article about tuberculosis at a 'south school' (http://www.guardian.co.tt/news5.html) the writer states on at least 5 occasions that TB is a virus.

She even spoke to a representative from the ministry of health- the Chief Medical Officer- and she STILL didn't try to get her facts straight. Inexcusable.
Usually when a story like this breaks, the responsible journalist will have a fact box to adequately bring all readers (and maybe even themselves) up to a level at least where they may interpret the story rationally (rather than tabloid fare to just 'hold yuh head an bawl'). But no, of course not.

Surely when she spoke to the Chief Medical Officer and assuming she actually performed some research beyond this classic piece of junk:

Another staff representative Fernando Ramcharitar said a pregnant teacher had come into contact on two occasions with one of the affected cleaners.

“The teacher visited her doctor yesterday and he was very concerned about the baby, so much that he wanted to conduct a Caesarian section.”
I can hardly wait for the follow up piece on this one.

Yes as I was saying, if she performed any kind of research she would have understood the difference between testing positive for TB and having tuberculosis. But then that would have been a boring article, and factual boring articles don't get awards I guess.

exhale....

Here's the archive link Falcon. (Guardian changed over to tomorrow's stories already, and is not even 9 o clock ).
http://www.guardian.co.tt/archives/2007 ... news5.html (http://www.guardian.co.tt/archives/2007-12-05/news5.html)

It's a shame the author didn't even do a google search on the topic. These news sources really need to have a medical professional available to contribute to these types of articles (much like Sanjay Gupta does on the CNN News channel).

That said, I have seen worse. During the elections, I heard local (Grenadian) news programs refer constantly to the opposition CUP (C-U-P) party in our elections. =\

*wooooossssssssahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh*

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection, not a virus.

Try this here link,
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/tuto ... 0_no_0.htm (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/tutorials/tuberculosis/htm/_no_0_no_0.htm)
Lots of good reliable information there.

Who's woosah?

Interpreted it as "woosh", as in, "that one flew right over my head". There's a hand gesture to go along with it..

Today's article by Radhica Sookraj mentioned 'bacteria' no less than 5 times. Thankfully no talk of deadly contagious viruses!! Progress.

In another Guardian front page article (no author specified) however, there is still talk of 'the virus'.
Then a very misleading style of writing:

Doon said meetings were held with staff and parents to assure them there was no risk of them contracting the virus. Does this imply that the Chief Medical Officer also made mention of a virus, or does the lack of quotations adequately absolve the good doctor?

Funny enough, neither story followed up on the poor, suffering, innocent, pregnant woman and we therefore don't know if she will be having this C-section or not, (ir)regardless :) of her stage.
I really do hope they tell us more in future reports.

Da public needs tuh know!

Falcon. maybe you could write a letter to the newspaper. They don't really have a problem admitting mistakes when it is brought to their attention.

^ Dude, this guy in the Tech Section for Guardian, he was sooo arrogant about correcting a mistake he made, never corrected it either.

Aye Amelia,

borrows and borrow's...........yuh realise that the S and the W on the left side of a standard QWERTY keyboard, and that yuh have to have INGRAINED bad grammar to search out the ' on the right side to make it wrong...............is for dat them did invent negative marking for MCQs (not MCQ's!). Yuh know Oxford stop negative marking now by the way? What madness is dat....them was always second fiddle to Cambs anyhow........not only do you not know this is the correct thing, but you dont know this is the wrong thing, and why!!

Amelia

You see, this would have never escaped Sylvester, one of our other Mods who incidentally is a lawyer in his free time away from Carnival related pursuits. No where in my post did I say that either of the quotes cited was penned by Radhica. She gets away for another time.

Eh heh? Well look ting! Big shot lawyer in de place and I wasting time talking to small fry like u...

Should I feel foolish thinking that a mod would have not spammed his own thread but posted articles relative to the topic heading (esp since it on the health and wellness board and neither quote had any relevance thereto)?

Know what else Syl would have noticed? That my post did not refer to any specific article but the fact that u have a history of analysing Ms Sookraj's articles, so much so that she does indeed have her own thread on TTOL, authored by your goodself.
