KIRK Meighoo, political leader (Trinidad) of the Democratic National Assembly (DNA), said he was offered a safe seat of Caroni East by the UNC Alliance but turned it down.
He said the DNA had now severed ties with the UNC Alliance and would contest five seats in the upcoming general elections on November 5. I thought it was 15 he wanted?
The seats are Tobago East and West, Laventille East/Morvant and Laventille West and St Augustine.
Meighoo said that the candidates would be decided in the next week. He noted that when the DNA first put together its manifesto, it had intended to run for 14 seats but will only manage to contest five next month.
He said DNA members which included chairman Anthony Pinto had attended the Alliance meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss unity.
“In contrast to earlier concurrence on party independence, Alliance members disagreed with the DNA adhering to its own manifesto, in particular the DNA’s commitment to a federation between Trinidad and Tobago. LOL 2 Prime Minsters ?
“The DNA consequently withdrew from the meeting because of the lack of professionalism, respect and commitment to the liberation of Tobago through federation,” he said. I see
Meighoo said the choice to contest the two Tobago seats demonstrated their commitment to Tobago becoming a federation.
He said that if he had accepted the Caroni East seat then he would have betrayed the principles on which the party was established and his brother, DNA’s political leader (Tobago) Collin Coker. huh ?
He explained that the DNA was working with the belief that the people of Laventille were ready for change from PNM governance. He said that they had held many meetings in the area and understood the needs of the people.
His realistic expectation is that the DNA would walk away with the seats which they were fighting for with the hope of having a footprint in Parliament and be able to set about positive policy changes.
well that explains this.
Earlier, after about 20 minutes of meeting with Panday, Political Leader of the Democratic National Assembly (DNA), Dr Kirk Meighoo, stormed out the meeting.
At 6.15 p.m., Meighoo angrily flung open the doors and walked away from a meeting which was discussing the leadership of the UNC Alliance.
He was accompanied by Salim Muwakil and an unidentified woman. When confronted by the Express, a visibly upset Meighoo offered no comment.
Meighoo was not there to attend the meeting. He went specifically to speak with Panday on a possible alliance with the party.
