I really bothers me that in this lawless land of Trinidad no one cares to clamp down on several instances of persons using academic accolades when they do not possess them. Particulalry calling oneself "Dr". This title is reserved f or those with EARNED academic qualification in the form of Doctor of Philosophy in a particular subject area or MD for a medical doctor. Some other academic designations exist such as D.Sc. for Doctor of science etc. A person cannot also use the "Dr" title if the doctorate is given Honorary. It must be an EARNED doctorate. To do so is very very poor form and to say the least, very ignorant. Too many time we let this slide but this is a terrible thing for a society trying to move to first world status, not to mention the possibility of leagl fraudent charges. Right now in the national media forum are two men - one making himself prominent selling herbal cures and the other selling himself as a sex expert, who call themselves "Dr.". These fellows need to be held accountable if they are fraudently misrepresenting themselves. Please do not get me started also on the recent trend of Pastor this one and Reverend that one who now seem to have a burning need to add "Dr" to their title when many very well know they buy a certificate (unaccredited) over the internet and put in on they church office wall. People, what do you think? This has to stop now!

I'll sign up to that! People work too hard to have their accomplishments diluted by mamby pamby wannabes.
It is wusser when you have Indians competeing for the same jobs- in hIndia you can get a doctorate over the weekend.
But mind you, Doctor of Theology aint no easy thing to get, so dont paint all Dr Reverends with the same brush.

In my opinion it should be a criminal offense to buy a degree even if it is just to boast about having one . Very hypocritical especially for a pastor as he would be lying , one sin , and praising himself to the point of hubris , the sin of pride.

....but, is there a specific law against that in Trinidad ?

Really not sure there is a specific law but misrepresentation of person is illegal as w ell as professional fraud. A couple years ago there was a well known case of a lady beautician in Changuanas who represented herself as Dr.XXX and she was charged with profesional misrepresentation of herself as "Dr" as well as proven wrong for facial injuries by a client who complained about a treatment.

So, there is no law that says I cannot call myself Dr. Scorps, but if I call myself Dr. Scorps with the intention of fraudulently obtain some kind of monetary or other type of gain, that would be a criminal act. :)
Just call me Dr. Scorps :)

Why all the 'emphasis' on titles?
Should'nt the measure of the man/woman be their actions?
