View Full Version : South Beach Diet

Has anyone ever tried the South Beach Diet?
It's similar to the Atkins diet in that it cuts carbs in the first 14 days but thereafter get to reintroduce them slowly into your diet.
The difference between Atkins and SB is that Atkins allows you to eat unhealthy fats such as Bacon, Fried Foods, etc in unhealthy amts whereas SB focuses on leaner meats/cheese/legumes.
Does anyone have any experience with the program?

The difference between people who understand and benefit from Atkins and those who can't or won't try it, is the inability to understand what is unhealthy and what isn't.

well I've never done Atkins but have read that it's a widely misunderstood diet, there are alot of misconceptions out there
I was thinking about trying Atkins until I heard about South Beach
I like the idea of being able to have beans/nuts even during the induction phase of the program
what's your take on Atkins? I take it you have tried it and it works?

Trinique, the american diets generally follow the edicts set out by the heart association, which has based its recommendations on somewhat flawed research. Many of the 'principles' of healthy eating like types of fats and amounts of red meat are patently incorrect. The killers in the developed world are processed foods and stress- not fats, calories or cholesterol.

well I'm going to try and do South Beach starting Tuesday (Monday is ah holiday here lol)
wish me luck
I'll keep you all posted (those who care lol) on how this diet makes me feel. No bread, rice, potatoes, pasta or sweets for two weeks might kill me lol

Try avoiding bad carbs as much as possible!!!
1) white flour
2) white rice
3) sugar and processed sugary foods
Any type of carb that is rapidly digested and turns into sugar is a simple or bad carb!!! This results in high insulin levels and insulin is the fattening hormone responsible for rapid weight gain
Good carbs
1) whole grains
2)brown rice
3) beans of all types
4) ground provision
5) raw foods and many unprocessed foods
Trinique
05-21-2010, 12:45 PM
for two weeks I am staying away from good and bad carbs except some beans like chick peas, red beans, soy beans, lentils, etc etc
after two weeks I'll slowly incorporate the good carbs back into my diet until I reach my goal
I'll post my menu each day on the board
that's one you can have on this diet
have u tried SB Vaoi?
Nah i pretty much did some of those things though. I love cucumbers and its filling when you feel hungry.
Btw do you have a goal as to how many you intend to lose?
Trinique
05-21-2010, 01:04 PM
my ultimate goal is 20 lbs (that would put me at my ideal weight for my height)
but I would settle for 15.
ok, keep us posted on the developments!
Trinique
05-21-2010, 01:12 PM
I will!
I'll weigh myself the day I start and once a week thereafter.
I posted it on the forum so this way I can be accountable lol
wish me luck:(
Trinique

Run up de hill by the MacDonald Hotel.
Trinique
06-03-2010, 12:04 PM
lol de bus cud hardly make it up dat hill you want me to run up? lol
so I started Phase II today because I only lost 4 lbs so far:(
the scale is stuck and I"m NOT cheating at all.
so the book says that if I only have 10 lbs to lose I should start on Phase II
I'm allowed one starch and one fruit for the first week
Ducky
06-03-2010, 06:36 PM
One starch and one fruit per day?
Trinique
06-04-2010, 10:33 AM
yes one per DAY not per week as I mentioned.
After 7 strict days of hardly any carbs I felt wobbly and weak, I couldn't even work out.
So I started Phase II which allows you to have some starches and fruit.
Either way, losing weight sucks and is hard:(
Ducky
06-04-2010, 10:36 AM
Trinique...you ever try using the Glycemic Index to formulate your own diet?
Trinique
06-04-2010, 10:43 AM
girl this diet IS based on the glycemic index, so I know all about it
Bananas are suppose to be one of the worse, watermelon, corn and carrots too
but I love watermelon and bananas:(
steupssssssss
Ducky
06-04-2010, 10:48 AM
Hmmm...That sucks then...what about apples and pears and so on?
Bananas are suppose to be one of the worse, watermelon, corn and carrots too
that really suck, those are the best
Ducky
06-04-2010, 11:04 AM
Watermelons fulls you really good too!
Trinique
06-04-2010, 11:17 AM
apples are lower and so are pears
berries like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries are suppose to have less sugar
I only like blueberries, it's hard finding good strawberries, they're usually sour
doh tork bout pasta and rice geezzzzzzz lol
Ducky
06-05-2010, 04:39 PM
So what happens after this step?
Chicabonita
06-05-2010, 08:20 PM
Trinique what about eating smaller portions (and let me emphasize SMALL) and exercising? I never had a weight problem but I think if your diet consist in more fruits and vegetables in small portions and you work out daily, you should lose the weight quickly.
Trinique
06-08-2010, 05:14 PM
Ducky you stay on step 2 until you reach your goal, then you add more fruits/carbs back into your diet.
I fell off the wagon on Step 2. I think I like a more controlled way of eating i.e. weighing and measuring portion sizes (works better for me). I don't like the concept of eating til you're satisfied. I tend to not know my limit (unless it's vegetables, my limit is not much) lol.
Chica I've done weight watchers in the past and that is what they have emphasized, eat less of the bad foods and more of the good ones AND workout. I will be rejoining soon but wanted to try a different approach. Didn't really work for me though. Although I'm not the weight I would like to be, WW has helped me to keep the weight that I've already lost off, for the past 9 years. ....

It is thought that approximately one third of all cancers may
be linked to diet and certainly the incidence of certain cancers,
especially stomach and bowel, has increased as large- scale
food processing has replaced many of the wholegrain cereals,
pulses and roots in our diet with white flour and refined cereals
and sugar. Many foods contain protective substances called
antioxidants and phytoestrogens and other bioactive compounds
are found in garlic and onions.

Add to that the fact that American portions are far greater in size than other countries and everything is "Super-Sized" and therein lies another cause. Ever had a 72oz Steak? The average steak in any restaurant is 14oz with a gigantic baked potato, loaded with butter, chives and sour cream, veggies, a salad and/or soup or both and bread. And that doesn't even include the appetizer.

Trinique, you are NOT supposed to feel like that in ANY real diet!
Just eat smaller portions, exercise, drink lots of water and make sure you take your vitamins!

Eating disorders, whether it be anorexia or
bulimia, show individuals can turn the
nourishment of the body into painful attack on
themselves and they have at the core a far deeper
problem than mere vanity.
