New York murders at 40-year lowNY murder rates
2006 - 596
2001 - 649
1998 - 629
1995 - 1,181
1990 - 2,262

NEW YORK City is on track to have fewer than 500 murders in 2007, the lowest annual rate in four decades, according to police department figures.
There had been 428 killings this year as of November 18, compared to 511 at the same point last year.
Murders peaked in 1990, when 2,262 killings were recorded, making New York the murder capital of the US.
According to the New York Times, of the 212 murders in 2007 analysed so far, only 35 were committed by a stranger.
Most of the killings involved disputes between family members, criminals or rival drug gangs.
A majority of both assailants and victims had previously been arrested, the New York Times reported, and more than half were black.
Of the 412 people attacked this year, more than two-thirds were shot, the paper reports. The other 16 murder victims recorded this year died of injuries received in previous years.
Violent crime rates in the city of more than eight million people dropped in the first half of the year by five per cent, according to official figures.
The murder rate for this year is the lowest seen since the current system of record-keeping began in 1963.
Differences in the way crimes were recorded makes it impossible to compare the data with records dating from before then.
The soaring murder rate of the late 1980s and early 1990s was largely a result of turf wars between gangs running the crack cocaine trade.
The turnaround in violence from the early 1990s was attributed to the city’s zero tolerance policy, which saw police crack down on minor offences and drug dealing. — BBC

and meantime, back la la land, better known as Trinidad.....

Four more murders take year’s toll to 338
THE MURDER TOLL stood at 338 late yesterday, after three men were killed in separate incidents on Sunday night at St Barb’s in Laventille and Never Dirty in Morvant.
The three were killed by gunmen at their homes.
Police are also treating the death of an 18-month-old toddler, Latricia Jack, as a homicide. The other victims are:
• Kerry “Tyres” Blackman, 26, of Hamlet Street, St Barb’s
• Osband “Bumpers” Sylvester, 28, also of Hamlet Street.
• Sean Perreira, 24, of Laventille Road Extension, Never Dirty, Morvant.
A police report said that around 3.15 am, Blackman, a father of one, and Sylvester were at home in St Barb’s when they heard someone knocking at their door shouting: “Police!”
Blackman opened the door and was shot 15 times. Sylvester, who was standing in the doorway, was shot in the mouth and head.
Blackman’s relatives said he had lived the “life of a gangster, but had changed.
“Since he (Blackman) had his child, he changed,” a relative said yesterday during an interview at the Forensic Science Centre.
The relative said the men who entered the house wore bullet-resistant vests marked “Police” and bandanas around their faces.
“They had ‘police clothing’ on except for the bandanas around their face,” the family member said. She added:
“I don’t know who would come for him. He was quiet and loving. I am in shock and my belly is hurting me since he was killed.”
Sylvester’s relatives said he did not deserve to be killed.
“He was loving and pleasant, and he was cool with everyone. He did not deserve to die like that. It was cruel. I am leaving everything in God’s hands,” another relative said.
Investigators said an arrest was imminent in the killings.
Police said in the second incident around 7.45 pm, Perreira was at home when three men entered his house and chopped his wife Ayana Francis with an axe.
Perreira went to her assistance and was shot in the chest. He died on the spot.
Police said Perreira and a group of men had been involved in an argument last week.
Francis was taken to Port-of-Spain General Hospital, and was listed in stable condition late yesterday..
The bodies were viewed by the district medical officer and ordered removed to the Forensic Science Centre for autopsies.
Perreira’s family declined comment yesterday.
Investigators said the deaths were gang-related, and homicide officers are continuing investigations.

well martin is a loser for saying that but he didn't create the situation whereby criminals walking free and always getting away.
He just there to find a quick solution to a horribly escalating problem. Which from what I gather from numerous posts on here is a shabby attempt so far. But u know what they say G.IG.O. :(

I'm impressed with the stats the article had, like how many murders were committed by strangers. Those would be useful to analyse the causes and possible solutions here. But then again, with our detection rate, its hard to find out if the killer is stranger or not if u eh know who do the killing. Im happy for new yorkers though.

We are such a small island of all 4828 square kilometres with a population of 1.2 million and we have how many MUrders per annum on average?
Sorry but the percentage per capita for such a small area is Ridiculously HIGH, it means that our govt and police are obviously Horrible and terribly Ineffective .

Vi well I have to think so cause I sure if people in Lahvantee did hold a man for allegedly doing something illegal and then beat said man to within an inch of his God given life with lead pipes then the police would have shot them down like dorgs and then get off in the courts. But as it's in West Moor land they obviously was right to take the law into their own unsullied with hard work hands not so?
Trini to de bone ah say. :)

I hear ya hun. Fear is the most crippling emotion ever. I think a stand needs to be made by the people and then it will (may or may not nothing is ever certain in life) have a ripple effect that will go either way. Towards parliament or down towards the other citizens of the country. If history has taught us anything it has taught us that it needs just one person to believe wholeheartedly and take a stand on their beliefs for change to be effected so that it can reverberate to generations and generations after that person has passed on.
Most people fear the idea of being chastised violently for standing up but this is not a victimless war. I wish someone could find the courage and do it. I doh have the ballz to (I am most ashamed to say) but I am most willing to support anyone who can and does, even if that means another coup or nationwide lock down. :(
Weird huh?
^^well it is weird but understandable......sometimes we feel so frustrated that anything we think cld work, we may be willing to try....
When i get out my car on evenings, i look around before i open my gate, look around while closing the gate, then i look around while going upstairs, finally look around before i open the doors....it is sooo*&^%......i hate feeling like that all the time.....i fear for my and those whom i love.....

My take on this whole crime thing is that some of the crime is avarice and some is just plain business at the expense of others.
For e.g. kidnappings need a coordinated effort or they will go wrong. Therefore there must be group of losers sitting down and plotting a list of victims as we speak and then investing heavily in time, manpower and pay offs for it to be carried out at set times and dates.
Someone or many someones is benefitting from this, I think it's always the people we least expect. For such planning to be carried out u need grunt workers and thinkers and and resource men/women. So that leaves me to put them into categories. Grunt workers the average bad boy or wannabe in the crime ridden poverty stricken overlooked and disrespected areas of our country (which we created as a result of our me me me mentality and not enough systems in place to take care of our down trodden). The thinkers are the middle men who can carry out instructions and knows to keep their mouths shut as they are financially benefitting from all of the chaos.
The Top Dogs the men/women who are immune from law (because they either back it financially, work in it or have family in it) they have the contacts, the boats, the passports, the overseas dodgy people and all that plus the know how to carry out the initial planning of these crimes.
Some of these crimes are carried out by avid tv watchers...who think hey that looks easy I sure I cud do that. Some of these crimes are blundered attempts for making money and with sheer stupid luck they succeed.
But it takes a minister and a government backing that minister to have the cojones to set rules and make sure these rules are implemented no matter what the cost to reputations. Better witness protection means sending people out the country to live and arranging jobs and visas for them and a stipend to see them started off whether it be temporary or permanent. Better recruitment drives and training of our protective services from the police man to the army man to the ambulance driver and nurses. Better systems to help those affected by crimes and tons and tons of transparency at each phase of these things.
But that's just me...another avid watcher of tv and reader of books. My input is but a drop in a bucket of theories that will never get heard as de damn Express doh like to print nothing they eh like at the point in time and de guardian is run by Dummynic Kalipersad. With stalwarts involved and doh care people involved in the implementation of suggested practices it will never see the light of day or it may start and never go further as there will always be the one person whose personality was engineered in hell to stop anyone else living their lives peaceably.
...nobody listens and in the meanwhile, live in fear..... :|

KFC spicy- have you ever been robbed at Gunpoint?
has anyone you know VEry very close ever been beaten by bandits , even after they willingly cooperated and gave the bandits all their possessions?
If your answer is No- then im not srprised by the manner in which you have compassion for bandits and lowlives.
I have NO sympathy for bandits- as they say regardless of who you are and where you are from everyone has a right to choose- some choose a life of crime and as such should accept then if caught will be dealth with accordingly!
And there are many cases where areas in Trinidad were fedup with bandits and constant pipers, did something about it because police could not and would not deal with it!
And Until proven guilty my arse!
yuh get caught red handed inside the car after breaking it open- you were caught on Camera on previous nights , so you know what- he deserved every flipping lash he got and if given that opportunity again id crack a whip in his rear end!

I hear that anger management helps Mr. Suckz maybe u should try it?? ;)

Er hello- the bandit was caught RED handed by neighbours, caught on CAmera for a few nights!
Where exactly in this scenario does he sound innocent????
^^er..so why take the law unto yourself???!!!!....why not hand over the evidence to the Police...if we have it your way...then..we have a whole different situation in our hands....everyone will want to take the law into their hands ...do you know what more damage to society that will cause...

I am sure they have started doing that lately as is evidenced by pics of crime scenes on the Express. They wear protective white jumpsuits now and they do cordon off the area. It took time to get them their but at least they are implementing it.

As to me living abroad and reading the news...well at least I read. And yuh know suckeetrini that these magical things called airplanes and my ability to come and go as I please does not limit me to stay in the UK where minds like yours are considered sick and are soon sent to asylums.

There may be crime all over the world, but that does not necessarily make it a worlwide problem. There is rain all over the world, is flooding a worldwide problem ?, no ,because some governments are proactive, and have the necessary infrastructure to allevaite flooding. I live in OCALA, FLORIDA, and crime is certainly not a problem here. DANCERBOY.
