View Full Version : Wendy replacing Valley ?

Former Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam has been tipped as one of the prospective candidates to replace Diego Martin Central MP Ken Valley.
Fitzwilliam, who is currently the Vice President/General manager of Evolving Technologies and Enterprise Development Company Ltd (E-teck) might be one of the "new faces" Prime Minister Patrick Manning spoke about at a PNM political meeting in St Augustine last Friday, it was learned yesterday..
If Fitzwilliam decides to fulfil any political aspirations, the election battle will become a Queen versus Queen scenario as former Miss Trinidad and Tobago representative for Miss Universe Nicole Dyer is an active member of the Congress of the People (COP) and also their public relations officer. It will soon be revealed whether Dyer will contest any political seat when the COP presents its slate of candidates.

word surfaced that the PNM leadership has opted for a Trinidadian “mystery man” living in Barbados for Diego Martin Central;
The mystery man from Barbados, who has been handpicked by PNM leader Patrick Manning to replace Trade Minister Ken Valley, is known only to a few, according to sources. Sources said he was well qualified but lacks the public persona of Valley.
Many at all levels of the party remain strongly opposed to the rejection of Deputy Political Leader Ken Valley, in particular.
So who it go be? Wendy or a mystery man ? We go see which paper have the inside scoop .

Does it not make the country look like some banana republic when beauty queens stand for parliament? I find it all a little bit embarrassing...

What?!!! The woman is also a qualified attorney! She is spokeswoman for many organisations and has had plenty regional and international exposure. If anything, she is one of the more suitably qualified persons!

No doubt she is just as qualified as any other politician... It's just that in most "serious" countries any past as a beauty queen (or any other occupation seen as "superficial" or "futile") would have disqualified you from seeking high office unless you had a well established political history.
But things are changing the world over, and "name recognition" represents such a saving of political dollars that these days it seems any fame makes you a suitable candidate. Hence Schwartzenegger as the governor of California, etc... What next? Paris Hilton for president?
What are Wendy's positions on the main issues affecting the country? What policies does she advocate? What is her vision for the economic future of the country? For the social future of the country? Is she a neo-liberal, a socialist, a libertarian, a social conservative?
None of these things seem to matter in Trinidad. This is why we are in the state we are in. The blind leading the blind...

If the story is true and she is a rep for the PNM then suffice it to say that when one reads the manifesto of the PNM one would have a clear idea of Wendy's position and vision for the country bec the assumption is that its one and the same.

Manning will not select Wendy as a candidate because he will not be able to control her, she is strong, independant, intelligent and Manning cannot handle that. I cannot see her supporting Manning's bid to be Exec Prez.
Therefore the mystery man in Barbados sounds more logical.

Oh, and also, she is more popular than he will every be, and will garner more support if she every challenged him for Political Leader.

Not really. The "developed" nations have no problem putting celebrities in high positions, as long as they are qualified. Remember what Regan did before he became president?

Yep, he was actively involved in the Actors Union in a Senior capacity (along with being an actor) for a number of years before becoming Govenor of his state, then president.
By the time he got into politics he was well prepared for it.
Not that Wendy is running for PM or anything like that, just wanted to point out that he just didn't go from the silver screen into the White House.

Interesting thought, I myself think the COP could use some new faces rather than an amalgamation of old faces from different parties and/or failed parties.

The majority of the candidates selected by the COP so far are new faces. We may see a total of about 7 or 8 old ones, Dookeran and Gillian included.
ANewsday sticking to thier story.

at this rate if Wendy isnt the candidate then whoever is chosen will be considered a diappointment.
HIGHLY respected Trinidad and Tobago banker holding a key position in a Barbados financial institution is tipped to replace Ken Valley as the PNM candidate for the Diego Martin Central constituency, PNM sources said yesterday.
Party sources yesterday narrowed the possibilities, identifying three likely candidates — Robert Le Hunte, who comes from a prominent San Fernando family, but whose local residence is in the Diego Martin area; Michael Mansoor, who was strongly rumoured to become finance minister in 2002 and Mariano Browne, who has links to the PNM. All work in Barbados, but sources said the three were eligible for candidacy in TT.
Any of the three men, sources said, could also replace Valley as Minister of Trade in a new Patrick Manning Cabinet. Le Hunte, who holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, is Managing Director and CEO of the Barbados National Bank. Mansoor, who also holds an MBA, is Chairman of First Caribbean International Holding and a former president and CEO of CIBC West Indies holding. Mansoor used to be an independent senator. Browne, who holds a degree in Economics, is Managing Director of Butterfield Bank Limited and a former manager of Caribbean Commercial Bank.

... Is she a neo-liberal, a socialist, a libertarian, a social conservative?
I once remembered she told Convent girls in a public forum that fornication is immoral. She seemed conservative then.
Don't know if she was being a hyppocrite though.

Wendy is as qualified as they come.
She was in St. Joseph's Convent when I was in St. Mary's College.
She is incredibly bright, beautiful and classy.
So I wonder why it is that no one is making similarly negative comments about Nicole Dyer? What are her qualifications .....other than being a member of the COP?
So if you have beauty and brains and you support the COP it is okay but not the PNM? Utter hogwash! The fact of the matter is that Wendy comes from a strong PNM family and her mother is a very active member in the Diego Martin Central constituency. So take that!

Having qualifications don't mean anything much out here because what Wendy have, alot of people out here also have....the question is...what will Wendy do for her constituency, her ministry....if she is given a portfolio....and for the nation when she gets into government.

The mere fact that Wendy's name has been mentioned in Valley's replacement, this means she will get it....I can't see a well known person like Wendy getting shaft at this late stage.
