that's not cool, i real fraid snakes :(

Solachica
12-04-2007, 05:20 AM
^snake must be fraid you more.
I was in forest one time and I sitting under a tree. Next thing you know I hearing some noise like leaves rustling. When I look up I saw a snake climbing down the branches of a tree behind me. I just get up and watch it come down becos I ent want tht doing he thing behind me.
A lot of times in the forest you don't see the snakes but you smell them. Sorta this 'fresh' smell. So the older bush men wud say snake in the area.
I did some weeks intern at wildfowl trust and they had a snake there. I decided tht before I left I wud touch it. They men said tht snake cud sense fear so don't touch it if I afraid. So I did eventually touch it. Wht I can tell you it feels like is jello. Soft and cool.

I knew a guy who walked around with his backpack and his two pet snakes in them and real limin on frederick street on a friday evening. we used to pet them. they cool man. except the obviously predatory ones.

Falcon

KFCSpicy

lmaooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I sensing a hand bag bashing here.

Whaz de scene Falcs? I meant the huge arsed boa constrictors. It cute to have some animals when they small and tame and mean u no harm but these large basstids mean u harm sensed fear or not. IMHO ;)

Falcon
12-05-2007, 07:34 AM
Well, I dont know if I'd say boas are 'obviously predatory'. Most snakes above 15 feet long STILL either run away from humans or lay low in people's presence. The legendary ones above 25 feet are reported to just stare at you.

Ali
12-05-2007, 07:45 AM
eh heh^.........just stare at you  ........if i was a hungry 25foot long snake i not staring at you

KFCSpicy

12-05-2007, 09:19 AM
   ............K ...... why yuh want tuh put de man to dat test   ...yuh not easy nah! Lehmeh tell all about meh recent experience with Mr. Snake. It was a nice chilly evening in St. Petersburg Fl. The beach was nice to walk on and pick up shells... the water too cold to bathe in. So after walking on the beach, we washed our feet at the "stand pipe" outside the snack shop. While drying off the feet......one of the kids asked very nicely and calmly... "Is that a snake?".......well from de corner of meh right eyes ah spotted a black "patch"......... boi...... is tuh see how I scream and run in de opposite direction.............NOW hear this! The snake too went in the opposite direction.... at the front of the building.... right where I have to pass to go to the car.............de snake just glide it's merry way across my part into a nearby garden not even acknowledging any one's presence..............Why we humans so!

KFCSpicy

^^^^ We always fear that which we know nothing or too little about. Be it diseases, other races and simple things like food and music.

I fear the pain the stuff cud cause but me eh fraid the animals themselves...well kinda. Some animals whether they be harmless or not does scare de living daylights out of me.

amzz
12-05-2007, 05:37 PM
Are those the mountain doves? They call them ramier? Sp?

you could be right about the names. It does bear a resemblance to this one: http://ruchet.com/oiseaux/pigeon-ramier/DSC_1645.jpg

maybe the ttonline inhouse birdman can shed some light here?

Here is a photo of what I think is one of the birds nesting and another photo showing the eggs.

Falcon
12-05-2007, 06:43 PM
Ama, while doves and pigeons share many characteristics in classification, your pictures are definitely doves and the above link is for a pigeon. There is a lot of interchange in the names, and in fact some obvious pigeons are called doves. I know we have ground doves in TT, and maybe even Caribbean doves. Columbina would be the genus of a few of the ground dove species, if in fact there are a few.

Brilliant! Zing and is that a 'wholly worm' caterpillar?

wat is a wholly worm caterpillar? :oops:and ah spell it wrong too! It is wooly........alyuh no how ah does spell!

It is the larva or worm of the beautiful tiger moth that we see in the summer. It has beautiful striped wings and black dotted body. Folklore in these neck of the woods, says that when they are spotted in the Fall, if they are brownish.... then we're in for a mild winter. But if they're black.........then we're in for a very cold winter! :) There are even festivals named after those worms / caterpillars / larva in North Carolina.

errr...help?

There are approximately 5,000 dragonfly species, 2,000 praying mantis, 20,000 grasshopper, 170,000 butterfly and moth, 120,000 fly, 82,000 true bug, 360,000 beetle, and 110,000 bee, wasp and ant species described to date. Estimates of the total number of current species, including those not yet known to science, range from two million to fifty million, with newer studies favouring a lower figure of about six to ten million.
Wikipedia

Most of these probably live close to you :)

Let me give some local birds whose pictures I will like to see:

A vieux mal (old male semp) - arguably the best ramajaying bird

The arandao - most scandalous bird

The black crow I think - greediest corn bird

The singing angel - known for its outstanding sky roll and handsome looks

The cravate - cleanest 'wheet'

Also what good is a bird without food? So some picts of semp/ balsam vase with fruit, cravate vase and bearing candlestick will do fine.

Ali
12-18-2009, 07:17 AM
thanks falcs. is that the local name though?

Falcon
12-18-2009, 09:41 AM
No Ali, the local name I believe has some reference to vultures when in fact it is more related to a cuckoo.

Ali
12-18-2009, 09:53 AM
From my observation they are far from vulturous... this forum have enough 'cuckoos'

bw.. mayaro is infamous for them at this time of the year

some info here on treatment:

Prevent further stings. Carefully lift off tentacle remnants, using a stick or gloved fingers. Do not rub the tentacles off, as this will cause more nematocysts to sting.

Next, rinse the affected area with seawater. Do NOT use fresh water or vinegar, as these may cause the stinging cells to discharge all at once and may greatly worsen the sting! Do not scrub the affected area. [vinegar, papain (as in meat tenderizer), baking soda, urine, or aluminum sulfate all may deactivate the toxin, but they may also cause the stinging cells to discharge all at once, possibly intensifying the injury]

Ice may be applied to reduce pain and swelling.

Yes Shaddeck, Amzz is correct that is a mama tayta. I had a few of those when i used to mine aquarium fishes. They help to keep the tank clean and they don't do the other fishes anything. most of the time they just stay to the bottom of the tank. They cannot be caught with a hook.
