Does anyone from Trinidad have this implemented in their work environment? I am currently implementing it in my environment and would appreciate some feedback on some issues that I'm encountering.

Or does is make sense to have Microsoft monitor Microsoft... :D

What you need to know? I'm consulting right now in Miami on a large scale deployment of MOM, migration to Exchange from Notes, Sharepoint and AD, tall order to say the least.

I used to use Nagios to monitor all my boxes across different datacenters but now MOM seems to be the way to go.

Wolfie, why the bias against MS? I'm equally proficient in *nix and windows but I look for the best fit, budget and scalability when choosing an OS for a project. Sometimes MS comes out on top and other times not but I can say that my overall TCO is lower with MS.

Hey cm,

It's not really a bias, i'm going by what i've seen. In almost every instance where i've put Microsoft servers under load, their stability, security and general upkeep became an issue. I guess at the end of the day it is up to the system/network architect/admin to decide what is best, given their experience. I still find it hard to implement the number one exploit target as a mission critical server though :|

Wolfie,

I didn't mean bias in a negative way, just was generalizing the point. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

One thing about MS though, since their security initiative they have been bringing out more secure products and dealing with patch management better than any other software manufacturer out there now. This is due to their experiences in the past where they have been burned and learned from the experience. As far as a number one exploit target well, I love Apple but they had more vulnerabilities found in their OS last year than MS. The attack spreads you see on the internet storm center on MS OS' and such are from MS servers that are incorrectly secured or just plain unpatched mostly.

Have you tried the Server 2k8 beta and put it through it's paces? I don't like powershell as it's too slow but the attack surface on the new server OS is greatly reduced from 2k3 and we've been running pen tests on it and it's been standing up.

Thanks for your reply.

I've setup SCOM 2007 will all the modules (except auditing) on a one server architecture. I want to know what the best way to monitor certain events on my domain controllers. I've created a group for my DCs but not sure how to proceed from there. Do I need to setup individual Monitors for the events that I need to monitor. The aim is at the end of every week to run a report on the dc's to see how often these events occur. Eventually we want to include essentials services as part of our monitoring scheme.

halo, sorry I got sidetracked from the project and only now seeing your response. I'll talk to the MoM guys tomorrow and find out how they have their setup running as I haven't been to their side of the shop since I last posted on this board.

You have a shortlist of events you're planning to monitor?

Yes I do...These are for the Domain Controllers.

681, 677, 676, 675, 674, 673 for now

I created a group for the DCs and I want to apply the monitor to the group

I was doing some research and got some how to guides at http://www.systemcenterforum.org/howto/ the tutorials by Tarek Ismail in particular. I'm looking at those for now.

I'll await your response when you get the info from your end. Thanks again
