I read something to that effect in Sunday's papers where a gang is apparently attacking ppl in their homes in Central. What was particularly disturbing was the rape of a mother and daughter on divali night while the family was at home lighting deeyas. Horrible horrible story. Now u hadda be scared to be in your own yard.

This morning on the radio I also heard of a gang of fellas who robbing beach houses in manzan and mayaro.

Nobody mentioned if any of the gangs were in masks, so I wonder how many of them will be identified and caught.

If they eh ketch the last 6oo who murder rape and pillage yuh think these set go get found and penalised according to the law? Sigh I doh know if to be very afraid or if to brush these things off as par for the course of a growing country? Naive or just plain dohtish of me? I feel if I brush it off it's dohtishness.

What can we do? Become vigilantes? Sigh! Now all I go be thinking about is the what ifs? :(

This has been going on for a while now and in some cases its the usual scenario where the victims are afraid of identifying the thieves.

The situation will be worse for criminals, those who hidin them, and the bacchanalists who feel the need to defend them.

Falcon might be talking about the whole corrupt police sellin drugs thing, but I doh see how more police on the streets will make that worse. If anything it will hurt their sales.

Nope Huma, not correct.

I was talking about real or perceived corruption/incompetence/lack of people skills in the police. The army is way worse, from accounts that I have heard. It is way beyond the simplistic view of more police on the 'street' equals less crime.

The men in the army are NOT trained to police civilians. The lack of synergy even between police groups is legendary, do we also include the army into this mix? Turf wars. Why is it that the Valencia police are so tight? Where do the muslimeen operate their quarries? Why are people afraid to report crime in Valencia. This is but one example.

As soon as the gov't take this suggestion and make it practice, the same people will jump up and say the army abusing its authority.

The police force and army in TT take most of its members from the lower levels of academia. Is this statement true or false?
In countries with a lower rate of police corruption, the police have very rigorous matriculation criteria. You think this may have an effect on the public confidence in those armies and those police forces to 'police' people better?

I could be wrong, but is so I see it. You dont fix an institutional problem with a downstream scheme.

Hmmm...I dont know that I agree with u Falcon. But then again, I doh even know where valencia is.
That rape might have been thwarted if there were regular police patrols. And since there's not enough police, joint patrols.
I for one, would feel safer knowing that there may be officers just a scream away.

Falcon, there have been joint patrols from the army and the police for years now.

Yuh acting as if it's something new.

The system worked wonders in San Juan during the periods it was in effect. Call up the SJBA and ask them about it. If it was so bad, yuh think the Chaguanas folks woulda be asking for it?

Police get the people skill bad rep primarily in places like Laventille, Enterprise, Sea Lots etc where they go in to raid and catch criminals, and get into confrontations with residents. We get this idea that the residents are all innocent and honest, and the police are big bad thugs, but the reality is much more gray. The police go in rough, true, but the bacchanalists and rebels make the situation worse by confronting them, actively hiding bandits, and in some cases even rushing them.

Conversely, joint patrols happen regularly in Port of Spain, and people aren't complaining about the way Police treat them there. When I worked in Port of Spain a day didn't pass when I didn't see people walking up to Police and asking them questions, or Police helping people cross the road etc.
I've seen them moving normally through Woodbrook and St James, and again, they were civil. Mostly because there wasn't anything to fuss about.

The Police far from perfect, but yuh takin it to an untrue extreme when you act as if the average Police officer can't carry out his or her duties civilly in a everyday environment.

Oh great, I wrote a long reply and when I submitted it, I saw Huma's...... :? The forum software somehow decided mine was rubbish and Huma's was gospel.....sheesh. It had to do with factors affecting joint patrols, beyond numbers of officers. I'll retype it later.

(Sometimes) If someone else replies while you're typing up your reply, the page shows you the new reply in case you want to address it one time...but your own typed reply is right there.

Yuh just needed to scroll down and press submit again.

That happened to me this morning.
