Marseille shatter the Scouse myth.
The Vermin were woeful, absolutely terrible. Their best efforts came in injury time, which says it all. Marseille dominated in midfield and should have been ahead before half time.
Maybe they should send Riff-Raff Benitez to Old Trafford so that he can learn how a team wins at home in Europe...

any bets going acid. :D
Let me see ... Almunia keeping a clean sheet and Adebayor scores.
Benitez might rotate his squad trying to play the physical game and the crowd will be urged to sing "You will never walk alone."
I think Liverpool is a more potent strike force when both Fernando Torres and Kuyt starts up front. If desperation sets in they could send in Crouch as a sub and play the long ball. There is no doubt that the Kop is a quality team and Rafa should let a winning combination play together for a while [but he is a coach with great credentials so it would be improper for me to impose my thinking on him].
If he wants to rotate then he could just use 4 different teams for EPL, FA Cup, Carling Cup and Champions League.

ANOTHER TROPHY LESS SEASON FOR THE GOONERS.
In terms of football, it was two entertaining legs.
But Sacky, you real boasting but even you (and the most staunch KOP fans) must homestly admit that the Helb appeal for a pk in the 1st leg was more than worth the "gift" Babbel got yesterday ... then that would have been a 2 goal swing the other way.

05-22-2008, 04:45 PM
As a longtime hater of the Penalty Kick Decider, I shall consider Chelsea to be the 'game winner.' They outplayed ManU for the majority of the game. The ball spent more time in the Reds' end of the pitch, and in the Blues' possesion.
Before you paint me as sour consider that in the 9 years I coached youth girls, my teams have won more league titles (6) and championships (7), as well as various tournaments (probably around 8 or 9), than any other team in our Club. Several of those wins came from PK shootouts. In fact, we have NEVER lost a PK shootout.
But those wins by PK have never sat well with me. I don't cherish them as much as the others, except for the last one in August. That one was special since it was against a team coached by our perennial runners up. Add to the fact that my daughter, the League's best Defender, was absent, as well as my 2 best strikers, then it feels sweeter.
But all in all, I have always taught my girls that a win must take place during playing time to have full satisfaction. I taught them never to gloat or brag about a PK win, since they could easily go the other way.
Mr Majik
05-22-2008, 05:03 PM
I must say, however that this match was one of the most exciting matches I've seen in my life. There was hardly ever a dull moment, ande it was rough, the way I like it.
The one negative was the atrocious refereeing. It ranks as one of the worst officiated high level matches I've ever seen. The referee made calls that weren't there, and missed obvious calls, throughout the game.
I am still perplexed as to why Makalele got carded. I can't understand Rio getting away from a red card and penalty kick (twice). And as much as I love to hate Ronaldo, I saw at least 2 cardable tackles against him.
I guess, in the end, fair is fair, since the referee wasn't biased in his ineptitude. He was balanced in his blindness.
Congrats ManU...
Next year it's Chelsea or Arsenal in yuh tail!
The Lumbergh
05-23-2008, 10:20 AM
As a longtime hater of the Penalty Kick Decider, I shall consider Chelsea to be the 'game winner.'
A shootout is the only way to decide the winner in a game like this. They tried to change things with the golden goal ruling and that didn't work. You can't ask them to run up and down until someone grabs a winner.
They outplayed ManU for the majority of the game.
You must have been watching a different game in the first half and extra time.
The ball spent more time in the Reds' end of the pitch, and in the Blues' possesion.
Ball possession Utd 58% Chelsea 42%

OK...now is midseason and I've had a chance to watch some Spanish, Italian and English matches. So I ready to call the Champ from now.
Since their sponsor is the United Nations Children's Education Fund (UNICEF) it is fitting that Barcelona will school all the boys on how to play like men. Barca is far and away the best team in the World this year.
ManU and Real Madrid are starting to pour it on, but alas, it won't be enough. Inter may also be in the mix.
My dream final would be Barca vs. AC Milan. Although Milan has an outside chance, their form of late has been splendid. It seems like Kaka has been apologising with his feet to the fans he disappointed by even considering that ludicrous offer from the Arabs.
Mr. Majik,
You are right to say that your DREAM final would be Barça vs Milan because it COULD NEVER HAPPEN in reality.
Milan is playing in UEFA Cup this year as they finished 5th in Serie A last season. The Italian representitives in the Champions League are Inter, Roma, Juve and Fiorentina (who didn't make it to the knock out rounds).
Mr Majik
01-29-2009, 03:53 AM
Acid...you are absolutely correct and I apologise for getting ahead of myself. That dream may happen Next Year.
So, in adjustment, I would like to see Inter or Chelsea on the opposite end of the pitch in the final.
But if Barca can pull out one of their multi goal wins, then let ManU be the opponent! haha
broadsword
01-30-2009, 09:47 PM
Barca are the favourites at this point. Their recent form has been sublime, they are no doubt taking La Liga. They also have a favourable draw against Lyon in the round of 16 (as compared to the English and Italian teams). It would be a huge surprise to me if Lyon somehow upset a Barca outfit in this sort of form. My dream final would be Barca-Chelsea, I am a Chelsea fan so bias reigns :P

Ah think United, Arsenal and Liverpool are all going through. Mourihno is too cocky and needs some humilation. Roma got plenty injuries and Walcott and Eduardo are coming back now, and Real Madrid have plenty problems; dey way behind Barca in La Liga and also have injuries.
qtr-finals is tricky. Ah think avoiding Barca is the key, but bayern look strong after their win, and chelsea is also a strong team. best get either villareal, panathaniakos, sporting lisbon or porto in the next round, and leave Barca, bayern and chelsea for the semis. :D

Ireally hope the Liverpool bandwagon doh pass mih house oui...ah might be tempted to jump on! Egads!
They played a fantastic game. They were in command from naught to ninety.
Although, I feel Torres foul Pepe on the first goal, and that deflated Real. That would not have turned Real's fortunes but it might have been more of a match.

boy, i'm a gooner and it was pressure listening to them on the radio!!!!
But even though Arsenal didn't play well, a win is a win. Besides, Roma had dey chances and failed to take them! ;)
My preferred quarter-final opponent would be either villareal or porto. If not them, then ah want revenge and plenty licks for liverpool! but as long as we don't get Barca, i'm happy. :D

I watched the UEFA tie between City and Aalborg. That first goal was World Class!
The bullet pass from Robinho would have been fumbled by everyone I cna think of, but Caceido(sp) took it to a standstill, then muscled his way in for an excellent shot.
Man, that is football!

Chelsea going to win at Stamford Bridge.
Its possible.
Puyol is suspended and Marquez is now out for 10 weeks. The only senior centre-back Barcelona have to replace them is an unknown and virtually untried Uruguayan called Caceres.
Mr Majik
04-29-2009, 10:10 AM
Caceres has impressed me with his play. And don't count out Sylvinho.
The silver-haired veteran still has a few tricks up his sleeve, evidenced by his playing more than the much younger Caceres and Abidal of late. His lack of speed may prove a factor, but when he gets the ball he will usually play it well.
'Memba! Ah did say ANY 11 Barca put out is a top flight side.

Even at 1-0, the odds are stacked in United favor.
Arsenal cannot afford to concede at home but at the same time, they can't afford to play it tight either as they have to go looking for goals. United have never won at The Emirates (and that record will have to go out of the window at some point) and games between the two are always open...
Its by no means over, but its United's to throw away...I can't see United NOT scoring in North London...

i reckon it is advantage United, but Arsenal cannot play much worse than last night. I think they will improve on Tuesday, and i also think a large reason Arsenal played badly due to bad tactics from Wenger. :x
The man is a legend, but he shot himself in the foot in the FA Cup semi-final, and did so last night too. Cesc is not a support striker, and Nasri is not an anchor man.
Of course, United are capable of scoring, and i reckon whoever gets the first goal would be important. An early goal for united might kill it, but an early goal for Arsenal means both teams have to attack.
call this irrational, but i feel it in my bones Arsenal can win on the night and on aggregate. My head says United are favourites though. :P
