Wake up Light. PNM won yesterday because Basdeo Panday with his maximum leadership, venomous attitude LOST 23% of the vote of the electorate to the COP. If he were still a viable political force he would have attracted those voters to the UNCA regardless of what Dookeranan and the COP said or did.
The country has spoken. 23% were prepared to back the COP instead of the UNCA. 23% cost Panday the government. 23% did not buy into Panday's fear tactics of a vote for COP is a vote for PNM because 23% were willing to chance Manning over Panday. But what did Panday do?
1) He refused to step down, even 5 years after expressing his intention to do so after the 2002 electoral loss.
2) He tried to run the party from behind Dookeran's back, leading to the formation of the COP.
3) He spewed constant venom at COP throughout the campaign yet foolishly expected COP to unite with him.
4) Now after losing his shot at government, he tells the electorate to blame themselves if their families are murdered, instead of trying to understand why he lost 23% of the electorate and woo them back.
This is why although COP did not get a seat, Panday has lost 23% of the electorate that will very likely never return to his fold. Without that 23%, Panday and the UNC will never see government again. And if Panday continues along his trend from last night, that 23% will only grow larger before the 2012 elections. Whether they continue to support COP or not, only time can tell. But Panday has alienated them. Dookeran gave them hope, and even though he lost that will be his legacy: He provided an alternative that in only one year of political life changed T&T's politics forever.
Panday, you foolish man!
This is democracy. COP didn't split anyone's vote ... there was a playing field and there were rules. When the final whistle blew PNM was given a mandate by some 200,000 citizens to rule for the next 5 years.

Dookeran is a traitor he will never be forgiven for the pain and suffering the people will have to endure over the next 5 years
And Ramesh was forgiven?
Ramesh had Panday in court. Dooks never did all that.
Dooks was graceful even in defeat. He was a statesman. He accepted the results with public dignity.

That is not a rationally thought out position and you know it. We live in a democracy, Dookeran provided a position and 23% of the electorate opted to follow him. Splitting of the vote is rubbish. COP regained the ONR vote which Panday had for a while by virtue of the NAR. He never owned those votes. Instead of blaming Dookeran, ask Panday why he kept insulting that 23% of the electorate and threatening them with a PNM dictatorship (which is a tactic that clearly did not work) instead of trying to convince them the UNC could deal with the issues better than the COP.

Dookeran conceded that people did not want what the COP offered right now. He accepted that and promised to keep COP alive and put forth the principles of the party for when the people are ready. He took the democratic approach. Panday berated and insulted the electorate for his loss. He was aspiring to be Prime Minister of a democratic republic, and he cannot respect the choices of the electorate? Give me a break!

He tried to take Trinidadians to a higher level in politics, the type of politics that other developed countries practice successfully, but Trinidad is not read for that yet.
He didn't just talk the talk, he walked the walk.
Well done Winston; one day Trinidadians will get it, hopefully in your lifetime so that you will be vindicated by those who now scorn.

While I am disappointed I am not surprised by the results. But I have no regrets since I voted for what I believed was right and about 23% of the electorate was in line with me. That in my eyes is really good in this information age for a third party which us under a year old.
Dookeran's speech showed the grace of the man, even in defeat and I commend him on that. I do think he needs to look within his own party for the answers and build at the ground level starting today. To blame the country only for this loss is no better than the UNC.
I believe Montano said it last night, the COP had possibly the best management team but lacked the salesmen and without them you not selling anything.
The ideas behind this party will resurface again, whether under the COP banner or under a new name and leader, time will tell.
Panday has the more or less the same makeup as the last time he lost the government and court cases hanging over his head. If he goes the vacuum he leaves could make or break the UNC.

When will you ever realise that Panday is a major obstacle towards UNC getting back into power. Do you not know it is because of Panday's arrogance and abuse of people that caused Dookeran and others to leave the UNC and form their own party??? Do you not know that it is because of Panday's behaviour, alot of people across Trinidad have a total dislike for Panday??? Panday got what he deserved and trust me....Panday will never ever smell Prime Minister or President position in this country.....maybe if Panday migrate to a small unpopulous island somewhere in the pacific ocean, he might have his chance there....but he certainly aint going to have it here.
And if we had this proportional representation constitution, COP would have a quarter of the total amount of representatives.
No one should blame COP for their losses.
If you make a mistake once that could be considered a learning experience, but to make it twice has to be your fault!

MG,
Did Panday and Ramesh know how important it is to keep government when they destroyed the UNC govt that some of the same COP supporters yuh continuing to cuss, worked hard for and gave to them to manage?
Do you consider that it is precisely because they both refused to step aside after that betrayal and that Panday continued to behave as if he personally owned the UNC and was belitting and cusing and name calling the innocent as if he had done nothing wrong and nothing to atone for that caused the problems and the results.

The light ,
What happened in 1986 when the PNM was defeated 33 t0 3?
Was Panday the leader then?
The PNM has won the election but there is a lesson in there for those of us who do not support the PNM and that is that it is extremely difficult for the UNC base to get into power without the support of those who normally do not vote for either the PNM nor the UNC and abstain from voting.
It stands to reson therefore, as was proven in 1986, that the UNC cannot afford to refuse to compromise or continue to attack and vilify and antagonisethose of that group.
Remember "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and that friendship must be cultivated well in order to gain victory. There isno other way.and we must begin to build that alliance now.
Continuing to berate each other a la Panday is not the way to go. BTW without integrity we are following the law of the jungle. Without integrity Panday won his seat but lost an election he could otherwise have won.

MG,
Did Panday and Ramesh know how important it is to keep government when they destroyed the UNC govt that some of the same COP supporters yuh continuing to cuss, worked hard for and gave to them to manage?
Do you consider that it is precisely because they both refused to step aside after that betrayal and that Panday continued to behave as if he personally owned the UNC and was belitting and cusing and name calling the innocent as if he had done nothing wrong and nothing to atone for that caused the problems and the results.
Panday should now "take his jahagee bundle and go" quietly into the night and disappear,I for one am totally fed up with his brand of one man politics.
Well Dookeran made Manning prime minister thousands of us going to suffer for that but what the heck, your integrity intact
And Ramesh made Manning the Prime Minister in 2001! What's your point. Had it not been for Ramesh the UNC would have been in power today and elections would have been in 2010. Ramesh, not Dookeran, responsible for the PNM being in power today. I was a member of the PNM in 2000 and 2001 and yuh could take that to the Bank. Ramesh was we hero back then.
dookeran made Manning PM ? i thought it was the 299000 votes Manning get that did that ?
