....do not split the opposition. A PNM is a PNM is a PNM. No matter how bad you treat them, they will always come back for more. So don't even TRY and get these votes.
Hopefully and regrettably, 2007 will be held as a monument of what happens when some smart ass tries to start a third party out of hate and attest for future elections of what NOT to do when you do not like the ruling party and want them out.
PNM won this elections with less than 50% of all the votes, that is not democracy, that is just sad!
End of story.

The moral of the story is if the UNC cannot take responsibility for its own shortfalls and make a genuine attempt to woo voters back to it instead of trying to persuade the electorate to vote for them out of fear of PNM winning, there will always be room for a third party that will negatively affect the UNC's chances.
Don't blame the COP. Instead try to understand why people supported the COP and consider revising your strategy so that portion of the electorate will come back to you. If you don't, the COP will just be stronger come 2012.

Some people vote for the constituent CANDIDATE they like and not the Party they represent. Remember it is the individual constituent representative who will make things happen on a local, street-corner level over the next 5 yrs. Maybe the parties should think about who they are sending up to represent them within each and every district.

I can agree with that. But I must also mention that as long as a candidate is affiliated with a party, the candidate will gain or lose a lot of supporters based on the perceptions about the party they belong to. What you have mentioned is most certainly a factor, but not the factor that caused the UNC to bleed away so much support this election. Much of the COP voter base went with COP because they did not like what PNM or UNC represented.

What was the outcome and in how many seats did the UNC COP combination surpass the PNM?

I blame both UNC and COP for the PNM victory. However the COP must take 75% of this blame.
The UNC must take some licks because of its inability to attract COP into unity, maybe they should have offerred more to the COP to join. UNC proved to be more politically experienced and street smart by insisting on unity. They made it clear than the opposition had to be united to win. The UNC understands that the PNM vote is firm and will stay PNM regardless of PNM performance.
The COP proved to be politically immature and naive in thinking they could win the elections on their own. All the warning signs were there but they maintained full speed head into the iceberg like the Titanic. Some are now suggesting that COP did this on purpose to ensure PNM victory, these questions will continue.
Will the COP and UNC learn from the errors of 2007 or will PNM continue to enjoy power despite more than 50% of the population voting against them. The answer is not easy since history has repeated itself again --- the same thing happened in 1981 and 1991 elections and don't bet against it for 2012.

Sirius, do you really feel all the big business that was backing the COP chances in this election will now stick around with the COP waiting for the next 5 years or will they now move back to the PNM and ask Manning forgiveness? How will the COP survive for the next 5 years when they have no voice in the house, when people like Yetming, Ganga, Gillian and others move on with their lives.
Your forgot Roy Augustas works for Jack Warner, Jack is his boss do you really feel Roy will cut off his nose to spoil his face now that the COP is nothing, what about people like Bhoe Tewari whose existence now depends on what Manning decides to do with him at UWI or better yet Abdul Hamid who Bhoe son ran against?
Do you really feel Manning will forgive and forget the COP and let them off the hook waiting on 2012, let me just tell you Patrick Manning starts is election campaign from tonight for that date in 2012 he is going to move everything and everyone that stands in his way, he will never let the COP ever get a foot hold in this country again.
SO if you feel that by some magic COP is going to just sit there and wait till elections come again am sorry for you both Manning and Panday from this did on going to make it a their duty that the COP will never be heard of again and that is the nature of politics, COP had the best chance at making this work and to build that party to be something great but they blew it, sorry they will never ever get that chance again.

Interesting blurb there Macco, but it does not address one bit of what I posted. I am not talking about who in the COP going to do what or how. I am talking about the 23% of the voting population who went out and cast their ballot behind the COP instead of the UNC or the PNM. I am talking about why they voted that way, what the UNC did to lose them as UNC voters, and how the UNC intends to get them back for 2012 to form government. The UNC cannot win government unless it can woo back the nearly quarter of the voters whose ballots kept them from winning key constituencies.
Hear what Macco. I really don't care what you want to spin around with. Stop diverting the issue and address the point. Get back to me when you can do that.
COP has shown the nation that there is a way out of all this squandering, corruption, inefficeincy and arrogance. Now they have to "educate" the 75% of the pple what politics is all about.!!
the moral of the story is that Bas boy the same ppl you say all kinda nasty things about...if you had held your tongue, unity could have happened and victory cld have been yours...

To the 23% of the population who voted for COP hold your head high, you did not get into the gutter politics of one party or the forked tongue calls of unity of the other.....You supported addressing the issues facing our country, with possible soloutions, and plans for implementing these soloutions.
23% in one year the PNM has less than 50% in more than 51 years of existance.....The longest journey begins with a single step and the COP has taken this step..Even if they are not around for the next election they have started the wheels of changes into motion. I have always been against being associated to a party because of my race, and the COP offered me an option which I accepted.
Thank you COP stand tall you had my vote, and any party in the future who does not try to divide my country will have my vote.

the moral of the story is Panday like opposition. Now he saying he want COP voters to cry and get raped and murdered. Like he plan on remaining with his 29% forever ?

... in an election take the fight to the incumbents and ignore the other opposition[s]
The vindictiveness of Mr Panday goes on, and his followers "like it so." Now "we like it so" is a legitimate slogan, and we must not deride it.

Yep. I just wonder if the lesson has been learnt.
Funny thing the way the electoral process is.
There are 41 seats in Parliament, however, the citizen has a right to vote for only 1 seat. It can be said that the citizen has only a 2 percent vote instead of a whole vote.
Additionally, aside from being limited to only 1 vote out of 41 seats, the citizen is further limited to vote only for a candidate seat from his constituency.
