How do I feel? I feel fine. Manning did not get his special majority, and although COP did not win any seats, they made a huge dent that no-one can deny. COP made significant inroads in PNM constituencies that UNC could never manage. They also effectively split the UNC votes significantly enough that PNM won by quite a margin. This should indicate that there is a significant portion of the electorate that is dissatisfied with the traditional parties.

The voice of the people have spoken. If COP can do this with only a year to work with, they are a force to be reckoned with. We have seen the birth of a new entity, and I am happy to see it is an entity that can gracefully admit the population does not want what it represents right now. I am happy to see that it intends to stick around, and it will continue to have my support so long as it does not fall away from the principles that attracted me to it in the first place. If nothing else, it has proven that there is room in the country for a third party.

So how do I feel? I feel great. I have been a part of exposing that our traditional parties are not cutting it for a large chunk of the electorate. If COP can do so much damage in one year, then what does that say? A lot of COP supporters voted UNC because of the threat of a PNM special majority. UNC got their seats, but their voter base is not intact. If they want those desperation votes to turn into guaranteed governance support for 2012, they need to address this alienated base.

As of tonight...Panday has not done a good job by trying to lay blame at the feet of the electorate. Panday is an electoral candidate. His party's position in government is won and lost by whether or not it can woo the voters. Don't blame your electorate for voting for someone else. Instead, admit they did not support your position and either stick through regardless or revise your strategy. After all the lambasting he received, Dookeran was able to concede that the country chose not to vote for what the COP represented. That to me says a lot about his character.

So nice try COP, better luck next time. I hope you contest the local government elections. I hope you work the ground over the next five years. Show the electorate you're here to stay and not just another third party doomed to fade into the night, and you will be a force to be reckoned with in 2012.

In the meanwhile, I hope the PNM's new slate takes a more effective approach to the country's ills than the last, and I hope the UNC provides a responsible opposition that will work with the government to provide checks and balances instead of just blind opposition to all bills.

Sumana
11-06-2007, 12:23 AM
So you mean they going to contest local govn't to split more votes?

well yes :)

A VOTE FOR COP IS A VOTE FOR THE PNM

Sirius
11-06-2007, 12:28 AM
So you mean they going to contest local govn't to split more votes?

well yes :)

A VOTE FOR COP IS A VOTE FOR THE PNM

Panday mounted the stage berating people for not voting for him and telling them to blame themselves if their families are murdered. He's splitting his own votes with that nonsense. Don't you see? If Panday did not insult and degrade his own supporters, the COP would never have garnered a following to begin with. They would have been happy staying with the UNC. If the UNC cannot understand that it is its own tactics that has lost it votes, they will continue to bleed support.

Make no mistake about it: A large chunk of the votes UNC got this election were people who did not like them but just chose them over PNM to avoid a special majority. If the UNC wants to rebuild itself for government in 2012 it needs to stop being a better of two evils and start being a genuinely desired option. If it cannot do that, the COP (or another force just like it) will just be even more influential in 2012 than 2007.

Maccogirl
11-06-2007, 12:36 AM
No the country did not show that it is dissatisfied with the traditional parties because if they did COP would of won some seats, it also shows as much as the COP wanted everyone to believe that the UNC base was fed up with Panday it was not else UNC would not of gave the showing that it did, and it also shows that if parties cannot unite to move the PNM no single party by itself can do that.

It all boils down to the fact that if COP supporters and the UNCA supporters wanted to move the PNM something had to be worked out, the leaders did not work anything out and the COP paid the price for that.

Sirius
11-06-2007, 12:41 AM
MAccogirl, the numbers speak for themselves. The COP did not win seats, but they had enough following to affect the outcome. If the UNC cannot try to understand why the COP supporters did not stay with the UNC and adjust their strategy to suit, they will have permanently lost that portion of the electorate and be permanently relegated to opposition.

You have to consider that there is a part of the electorate whose objective is not merely to move the PNM, but to support a party they believe will best serve them. You have to consider that to these people, the UNC is no better. The PNM has its supporters consistently because it does not isolate and break up its voter base. Perhaps the UNC had to learn this the hard way.

Maccogirl
11-06-2007, 12:51 AM
The COP did not win seats, but they had enough following to affect the outcome??? and what outcome was that may I ask

Sirius
11-06-2007, 12:58 AM
Macco, did the COP not get enough votes to keep UNC from winning several seats? Did the COP not get thousands of votes in regions where the UNC is typically a non-entity?

The elections done, time to stop the nonsense. We all know the UNC would have picked up a number of constituencies if it weren't for the COP. We all know there would have been less marginals if it weren't for the COP. What did the UNC do to allow a new party like the COP to pick up so many votes from them?

Time to stop stirring pots. Why won't the UNC admit they lost this voter base and try understanding and wooing them back?

raider
11-06-2007, 12:58 AM
maybe the unc should have focused it's campaign on the pnm and presented its policies, instead of aiming solely at the cop. the vitriol that i have seen from the unc posters during the campaign has been over the top. sumana has been the poster girl for that.

now, instead of reaching out to that 23% of the voting population, they are spewing more venom.

and, congratulations to the pnm. they may not know how to run a country, but they sure know how to run a political machine.

I think that the implications of a PNM 26 and UNC 15 and COP 0 are far reaching. When will we learn to deal with things based on issues and not race and Party. Well I see now that work is over back to fete is still our watch words in Trinidad & Tobago. Maybe its time for me to follow my parents (meaning all elders in Trinidad & Tobago) and be more divisive and look at dividing us more that uniting us.

For a country of 1.3 - 1.5 Million people with resources we must remember that like diamonds, oil is not forever and the resources we believe we command now may be the resources we cry for later. Let us not be like the Caribs in the tale of the Pitch lake, shooting all our humming birds to adorn our chief and forget that other people need them also. Trinidad & Tobago need to unite as a people now and work towards achieving a common goal of development.

De pappy say is Gods will, I say its the will of the nation. Soon the wealth would be squandered. How does dependant, unempowered pple exist then? God bless those who tried to make changes. Dont give up, try educating those uneducated about politics, the political responsibilities of their leaders and learning to think and make their own decisions. i'd rather not vote than settle for them as a 'lesser of two evils'

No political party in trinidad today is perfect. There are corrupt or alleged corrupt officials on all three. So the lesser of evils still holds. We just voted for the lesser of three... ;)

Time to stop stirring pots. Why won't the UNC admit they lost this voter base and try understanding and wooing them back?

This would require a maturity that I am afraid is not within any member of the UNC leadership or followers. One has to only listen to the venom spewed by Panday last night.

I can't help but think about the last US election--Bush versus Kerry....we felt extreme disappointment and real dismay...now.our worst nightmares are coming true about the current administration....

I hope that this is not the case for TT the next five years.....

There is a long list for the govt to take care of with oil almost $100 a barrel:

build first class hospitals as befitting a country that has money to burn

make education a top priority

fix the roads and build the train system

modernize, renovate the airport.....

If this doesn't happen, for God's sake stop whining and vote for the right party that will do it. Just look at how many people are lined up for President in 2008, change is going to happen and the people will vote on it.

HE HAS STARTED A NEW WAVE OF POLITICAL CONSCOUSNESS THAT IS INVALUABLE. INSTEAD JOIN HIM!!!

..................and give more to the health centres in the country. Make the best health care and medicine available to them. Stop short dosaging and killing them sick old folks.

Share the oil wealth with the people. Give more in pension. What could $1650.00 per mth buy at the grocery store and pay for private healthcare in order to enjoy longivity?

Promote "free education for all"
Give grants to primary school children to buy books and supplies.
Give every child free meals at school

Improve the stinking air quality in the entire country............spend the money to make long term differences..........

Alyuh think them politicians and their advisors deos listen to the people who put them in high office in T&T?

Fair enough... in your eyes he kept you from Government. But please tell me the penalties for the following:
1. Linking up with the Jamaat for the 2000 elections.
2. Linking up with Patrick in 2001 and causing the Government, which you had, to fall and go to the PNM.
And please note... I voted for the COP. Had there been an alliance or accomodation with the UNC with Panday around, I would have voted PNM! Prior to 2007 I always voted PNM, so how is that splitting the precious UNC vote? They never had my vote to begin with!

COP failed big time, all the big noise about the sleeping voters, the young vote, the undecided nonsense all yuh lorse

Depends how you define failure. The COP kept UNC from office, and that in itself will be seen as a victory.

and here i thought the objective was kicking the pnm out of office....
cop seems confused or maybe not, because pnm's aim was to keep unca out of office..

wait...cop and pnm had the same objectives

*sarcasm*

people need to stop hurting their head over this. pnm will govern. we don't know how well they will govern, but govern they will.

we have to survive. thats the name of the game this rounds and has always been so. survival.
