The wild fowls I feed in my back yard take the dry bread in their beaks and first soakes the bread in the river water before feeding their babies. So I learned to feed them with soaked bread. The things nature teaches us, only if we observe carefully.

Giant size plant fossils discovered near Jodhpur

New Delhi: The largest non-carbonaceous plant fossils, 140 times bigger than today's algae species, have been discovered in western Rajasthan, opening a new window for understanding evolution of life on earth.
A team of researchers from the University of Lucknow have discovered the fossils with physical characteristics of Vaucheriacean plant, a type of yellow-green algae found in fresh or marine water, five kms from Jodhpur in Sursagar mines region.
Generally plant fossils contain carbon and have simple structures. Fossils which are non-carbonaceous or lacking carbon content are rare, according to the scientists.

The findings of megaplant fossils imply a high possibility of presence of hydrocarbons in the Marwar Basin as the Vaucheriacean plants are known to reserve oil as food material, the University said.

Scientists develop rice that requires no cooking
Posted On :05-Oct-2009 09:16:54 Source :Jatindra Dash
Bhubaneswar, Oct 5 (IANS) Indian scientists claim to have developed a rice variety that requires no cooking, only soaking in water.
The rice variety developed at the government-run Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI) at Cuttack in Orissa is characterized by low amylase content and becomes soft on soaking in water, institute director Tapan Kumar Adhya told IANS in an interview.
Production of rice in India is extensive and last year's production figure stands at 98.5 million tonnes. The present variety, he said, can serve specific niche consumers and make rice cooking a hassle-free affair.
The new variety, named Aghanibora, tested by the institute is of 145 days duration with a yield of 4-4.5 tonnes per hectare and is at par with the currently grown rice varieties in the country, he said.
'One can get ready to eat rice after soaking it for about 45 minutes in ordinary water, and 15 minutes if soaked in lukewarm water, whereas other rice varieties need cooking,' Adhya said.
The rice is a local, improved land variety of Assam under the 'Komal chawl' category and is not genetically modified rice. It is like any other rice variety grown and consumed in India.
'However, this variety is usually prepared as parboiled rice and then it can be used for consumption after milling,' the researcher said.
The initial experimentation was to test whether the rice variety could be grown in the hot and humid climate of Orissa and still retain the property of softness.
Scientists at the institute have done extensive research over the past three years and tested its nutritional properties and other biochemical parameters, he said.
'We are glad that our experiment has proved successful, and from our knowledge we believe it could be grown in the eastern states of India,' he said.
'The present rice variety is an already released variety and can be taken up by the farmers with the availability of the seeds,' Adhya told IANS.
According to the institute director, the rice variety can be grown in all the eastern states of Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa and coastal Andhra Pradesh. 'As such there is no technical barrier in cultivating it in any part of the country,' he said.
'We do not have knowledge of any other country developing such rice variety as rice is a cereal with huge diversity.
'We do not have specific data about the average household requirement of fuel. But this variety of rice will help in saving fuel, at least for cooking of rice. Moreover, it will be a relief to housewives,' he said.

The Story of a Cheetah, a Hyena and Two Baboons and the sanctity of motherhood
Today, I am featuring a story of a cheetah, a hyena and two baboons. Why talk about man-eaters and monkeys, on this site, you might ask. This story is so amazing I wanted to share it with you.
One night, a female cheetah on a prowl, attacked and killed a female baboon. While she dragged away the carcass she felt something moving. She looked down to see a baby baboon extricating itself from the mother’s body.
The cheetah let go of her meal and sniffed at the cowering, terrified little animal. In the background, she also heard a hyena approaching for its share in the kill. By then she had become curious about the little animal and gently carried it in her mouth to a safe place. She came back to chase away the hyena.
The cheetah’s motherly instincts were triggered of when she saw a floundering baby animal. And hunger was forgotten when her maternal instincts took over. National Geographic has filmed these beautiful and touching moments that etch the sanctity of motherhood forever in the annals of time and life.
They say a picture is worth a 1000 words. A video is probably worth a million words! So here it is - the amazing video that shows a mother is a mother, whether human or feline!

Sorry brag, can't go along with this inappropriate and inaccurate anthropomorphism.
The cat is a leopard not a cheetah.
The primate is not day-old as suggested in the piece.
The cat is a very immature adult (and judging from the video and similar I've seen previously, not extensively trained by another adult/parent)
The ethologists may suggest that the cat killed her meal already and stashed it in a tree and therefore had no cause to kill again.....yet.
There are many instances of immature male and female predatory cats that 'adopt' Grants gazelle, bushbuck, and other similar sized young prey- with varying outcomes. Some kill and eat later; some 'protect' their prey to the extent that they cant eat or drink therefore starve to death, and some lose interest altogether.
It would have been instructive to find out what happened in the days following. Primates, like humans, are unable to cope without a mother's heat and food.
I too found the story questionable, but my usual attitude is since I have nothing to loose, I accept it and pass it on for whatever it is worth and let others decide for themselves.

The differences in religious beliefs are far apart and wide. Some believe that animals do not have a soul while other believe the soul is a part of God. Others believe the soul is created by one's karma and identification with the ideals of beliefs, always evolving to a higher level on its journey to salvation.

A baby elephant was given a day he will not forget when he received a blessing from a Hindu priest.
Ganesh Vijay, a 21-stone Asian elephant, was named and blessed in front of crowds at Twycross Zoo yesterday.
Ganesh's mother Noorjahan was first given a grain of rice and a red dot on her forehead by Brahmin Shree Mahendra Pandya, from Jalaram Prarthana Mandal temple in Narborough Road, Leicester.
Next up was little Ganesh, who received applause from the crowd as he was blessed.
Brahmin Pandya said: "This is the same ceremony we would perform for people.
"We believe there is no difference between animals and people – we all have the same soul – so I blessed the elephant as I would any human. We hope the animal has a long life and good health."
Ganesh was born at the zoo in August and is the first calf born at the zoo by artificial insemination.
Colin Ward, the animal manager, was also blessed by the Brahmin.

Asian mother breast feeds Monkey Son
Namita Das has two grown up children, but she continues to suckle her pet monkey.
Mrs Das describes Buru as her “son” (Pics: Bapi Roy Chowdhury)
Namita, a middle-aged woman who lives in India’s north-eastern Tripura state and is a government worker, describes Buru, the pet monkey, as her third child. “Yes, I breastfeed him. He is my son,” says Namita, caressing the monkey.
More than four years ago, her woodcutter husband found a dying baby monkey under a tree after a fierce storm. He brought the animal home in Chandrapur village on the outskirts of the Udaipur town in Tripura’s South District. “The monkey fell ill after the storm , in which it lost its parents. I decided to bring him up with my daughters,” says Namita.
Her daughters, Dipti and Tripiti, treat the monkey as a sibling. “We tie rakhi (a sacred thread) on Buru’s wrists during the Indian festival when sisters wish their brothers well,” says Dipti, the elder of the two. “I did not have a son. God finally gave one,” says Namita.
