Eudine quits PNM
By MARISSA WILLIAMS Tobago Bureau Friday, November 2 2007
Eudine Job-Davis has officially resigned as a member of the People’s National Movement and as a member of the government.
Job-Davis, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Tobago East, was replaced by Local Government Minister Rennie Dumas as the candidate to contest the General Election in that constituency. This decision has not settled well with Job-Davis nor several members of the constituency.
In a letter to PNM political leader and Prime Minister, Patrick Manning, dated October 31, 2007, Job-Davis thanked him for giving her the opportunity to serve the country. However, she said her effective representation of the Tobago East constituency was challenged and minimised by the “modus operandi of the PNM-controlled Tobago House of Assembly and the PNM-controlled central government.”
“I believe that the time has come for radical changes to the governance structure of Tobago and the institutional arrangements between Tobago and Trinidad.
My familiarity with the situation has convinced me that there is a divergence of views on the issue, and since this is fundamental to the very existence and development of the people of Tobago, I am unable to continue to function as a member of the PNM and the government,” Job-Davis said in the letter.
“I am therefore submitting my resignation as a member of the People’s National Movement, with immediate effect.
I trust that on November 6 the people of Trinidad and Tobago would have elected to our Parliament, dedicated, courageous and intelligent representatives, with pure hearts and ready hands, whom the lust of office does not kill... and whom the spoils of life cannot buy.”
