Panday wants ‘blaze of glory’ send-off
BY PRIOR BEHARRY

In what he said could be his last election campaign, UNC Alliance co-leader Basdeo Panday asked his supporters yesterday to send him off in a blaze of glory.

Speaking to thousands of supporters clad in orange T-shirts at Aranguez Savannah in San Juan, Panday told them to “stand tall” several times during his 18-minute address.

The occasion was the final rally of the UNC Alliance, dubbed Dance of The Revolution.

Panday called on his supporters to vote his party back into government, so it could continue the work it started while in office during 1995 to 2001.

Speaking about the establishment of the UNC at the same venue in 1989, he said to a tremendous burst of applause: “Today, 18 years later, we return to the place of our birth as the UNC Alliance to seek your approval and your blessings.”

Taking his only pot shot of the evening at Congress of the People, he said one of the reasons the rally was held at Aranguez Savannah “was that Woodford Square cannot hold so much people.”

Stating that he was now 74, Panday said: “I do not believe that I will have the strength to fight another election at the age of 79.

“Therefore, this may very well be my last hooray; so stand tall.

“During my years of struggle, I have made a lot of political enemies and received a lot of battle scars.

“My political enemies have tried to make me ride off into the sunset. They all wanted me to abandon you and the political scene.

“It is your love and your devotion that has kept me safe and alive to fight to this day. Stand tall.

“As I have come to what may be the end of a long journey, I ask you to send me off in a blaze of glory.”

The crowd erupted into wild cheering.

The UNC political leader added: “Send me off with my head held high, with my fists in the air, my soldier’s boots on my feet and my red beret on my head. Stand tall!”

“I ask you give me the last chance that I may have to take you to the promised land.

“God intended T&T to be a paradise. Let us make it so; let my dream come true.

“I dream of a land in which all are free, where there is peace and harmony among the various races. I dream of a land where there is no discrimination, no hate, no acrimony, no injustice, and one in which there is only love.

“I dream of a land where no man, woman or child go hungry and without shelter. I dream of a land where people are free to worship their God in a manner of their choice.”

Saying that he had no regrets, he said:

“I do not regard them as struggles, because every time we fell and got up, we were one step nearer to our goal of national unity.”

Yuh asking fer 'ah blazing send off'? be very careful what yuh wish for.

Snow, not withstanding the corruption charges, T&T have had the best performance in terms of infrastructure and services to the people under the UNC Gov't.

At this present time I honestly believe that T&T will be served well by the UNC-A Gov't as they will set out to prove they can be the best Gov't, and they will definitely go all out to redeem themselves in the eyes of the population.

All very valid peanut and I would agree with a fair chunk of them.

However the mistakes of the previous administration are being made again without any regard for the consequences but rather how many votes they would bring in. Panday's legal battles will be a distraction and should he need to vacate the leader's position there will be a power struggle that could be disastrous should the UNC be in power at the time.

Jack is a good guy at heart. I've met and spoken with the man on more than one occasion. He wants to help people but he does put himself and his family first which is where the commess begins. Can he be trusted to behave and not treat a position of power in this country like a position of power in FIFA? I don't know the answer for sure but I'm not willing to gamble on it either.

CM, I have been around T&T politics for umpteen years and I walked out of the belly of the PNM because at the time I was told by a former Senior Gov't Minister in the PNM who got ditched as a Candidate there is no integrity in politics and I didn't agree with him.

Yes Panday's legal matters are a source of concern, everyone knows that and everyone has also attempted to write him off as politically dead but he has proven to all and sundry he is not.

The fact is Couva North is to the UNC what POS South is to the PNM, and if need be a by-election will be called and no doubt the UNC will retain that seat. The UNC is prepared to face that possibility. Panday and Jack have something to prove to themselves and the Country, and if ever T&T will be at it's best, it will be under a UNC Gov't, and that is no joke my friend.

Couva North will remain UNC as long as Bas' legacy is there but a fracturing of the party itself will disenfranchise many outside of the UNC traditional seats.

Right now if the party had a viable option for leadership or a strong leadership council I could understand them carrying on way past Panday as a serious contender but he is their strength and their weakness at the same time.

They do, however Panday's experience was a necessity if the UNC were to survive at a time when everyone had written off and counted the UNC as among the politically dead parties.

Panday: Give me one last chance

Anna Ramdass aramdass@trinidadexpress.com

Sunday, November 4th 2007

UNC Political leader Basdeo Panday has issued a plea to the people of this nation to give him one last chance to serve this country.

"Send me off in a blaze of glory, send me off with my head held high, my fist in the air, my soldier boots on my feet and my red beret on my head, Stand tall!" charged Panday at the UNC-Alliance rally at Aranjuez Savannah, Aranjuez yesterday.

"I do not believe I will have the strength to fight another general election at age 79, this may very well be my last roar to stand tall, " charged Panday.

"Give me the last chance, that I may fulfill my dream to take you to the promise land, let my dream come true," he pleaded to the deafening cheers and shouts of support from the massive crowd.

Why Guardian & Newsday left this out?

Panday said he has made mistakes in his life, which he regrets and in a humble tone he begged the masses to forgive him.

"During my years of struggle, I have made many mistakes that I have regretted. I ask you to forgive me as I forgave them who have trespassed against us," he said.

Panday said he dreams of a land in which we can all live in peace and harmony, where there is no discrimination "a land where there is only love".

"I ask you, my brothers and sisters, for one last chance to fulfill that dream, that is why you have to vote for the UNC-Alliance on Monday," he urged.

Panday said as he goes in glory he wanted the people to give their children and grandchildren a chance to enjoy the life of the promised land.

He warned that if the people do not go out and vote for the UNC-Alliance they will not be able to look themselves in the mirror.

"How will you look at yourself in the mirror if your sons and daughters are kidnapped, murdered or raped?," he asked.

"Only you can change your life, I beg of you to do so on Monday, go out and vote for the UNC-Alliance, stand tall," he again pleaded.

Panday said that on Monday the sun will rise the same time the polls open and the people of this nation should see that as a sign of change.

"Give Mr Panday and me the chance, the dream, the hope to lead this party into a successful election. Give us the chance to get this party into Government once again," urged UNC-Alliance co-leader Jack Warner.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar sent her audience into a frenzy as she charged that the "Orangerevolution" will sweep the polls tomorrow.

"You are survivors of Manning's tyrannical regime, he tried to break you but today we say we will never be broken!" charged Persad-Bissessar.

She said the PNM will be sentenced to political death as "the purpose of the orange revolution, like all revolutions, is to fight for country,"

Former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj reminded the people that there has been over 1700 murders under a PNM regime and the UNC-Alliance will stop the crime wave in this country.

"The rising sun has already cremated the Congress of the People and on election day the Orange sun will burn the balisier!" he insisted.

Why all yuh studying Panday for if all yuh don't like him what can I say. What is it that some of you will do tomorrow run and vote PNM ?? COP cannot win the government and ALL of you know this, ALL of you COp supporters want to move the PNM but am sure because of pure malice some of you will vote PNM, but when the votes are counted even if people cannot see the faces that vote the count will tell exactly what the COP supporters did

To me if PNM wins don't come on here and say crime in Westmorring, don't come and talk about how some of you need bodyguards and your children have to live abroad and cant come home, don't flinch when you have to face Hi Lo, don't cuss when Rowely continues his housing drive in areas that you all feel is a bit too close for your liking, don't cuss when you have to pay for water to bathe, or when power goes, and whatever else you want to cry about be happy and say I made it happen

Hmmm you voting??? In case you don't know that is a public transport bus, I did not know its correct for the PNM to make use of a public bus to assist their supporters in getting to a PNM rally, and let me add it was not just one bus it was several .

Are there not rules about such a thing? but as I said in my post if you are happy with that kind of behavior from a sitting government don't cry whenever you see it again, tell yourself my principles told me it was acceptable. Using state funds and resources to fight an election is cool, but some COP supporters have a issue with where Jack spends his money, but PNM funds are of no concern ok

While sitting in the same studio with Rowley, he went on to accuse Manning of being a dictator, then told Rowley he was sorry he had never met him before. Rowley's response: "well I'm glad I never did".

Yesterday he said that Sizzla, Maximus Dan and Beenieman do not belong on a COP stage.

1. A number of PNM supporters who said that they were thinking of the COP jumped off of that bandwagon when they realized that Sat, Devant and Hulsie were part of the crew.

2. Rowley on Vernon......classic!

No man is indispensible, and a united opposition will defeat the PNM anyday with or without Bas and or Ramesh. The NAR experience proved it. The decimation of the NAR at the next election proved that the united opposition cannot succeed without the traditional Indo Trini votes, they are its foundation. Disrespect and lack of consideration for that foundation and its leader is the basis of the NAR's demise.
It is good to see that Panday has openly placed blame on Ramesh for the collapse of the last UNC govt. and that he has admitted to making mistakes of his own and is asking for forgiveness and one last chance. I am not impressed that he did not at the same time take his share of the blame together with Ramesh instead of making a general statement of errors being made.
Basdeo Panday is the foremost politician in TnT today bar none and has been so for many seasons. Ego and pride has been his weakness though and have brought unnecessary grief to his people, some of it while inebriated.
Good luck to the UNCA tomorrow it is the best hope for TnT.

I feel neither sad nor happy about whether or not UNC-A goes into opposition. I am praying that COP wins the election.
However, if there are in fact such COP supporters who would be celebrating this, one only has to think back that this is some kind of bad karma for the UNC.
