Okay.I suppose that this thread is over and out........Maybe most of the Trinis that remember the Combo Band movement are incoherent?.....The Steelband Movement is treated the same

If you look at music throughout the USA, Jamaica, and Trinidad, you will see a general decline in lyrics and music. With the demise of the big band sound like Glen Miller, Count Bassey, Les Brown, which we mimicked in the Caribbean, music in these parts have been reduced to a lazy form of repetitious one liners that started with James Brown in the States, Blue Boy in Trinidad, and fellas like Shabba Ranks and Beenie Man in Jamaica.
But the youths and them love de music, so who is me tuh complain.

hamelia, I like this!!--this was how music was enjoyed some years ago before the advent of the dj and powerful electronics and so on. It wasdalso all local and covered all the genres of the time. It catered to an audience of people far and wide who had an ear for MUSIC. From a kinder gentler time-when aggressive and angry and sexually explicit lyrics were unnecessary to be popular-like the one you mentioned "move yuh panty to one side"

Yuh hit on something that I does see being abused in music. People don't play music with feeling any more. A fella does setup a drum machine, or program he synthesizer and dat is it. Yuh hah tuh have more foot than a centipede to dance tuh he music.
Unlike a live drummer, a drum machine cyar draw on the feeling and adrenalin from de crowd to know when tuh cut, or when tuh use the high hat, and all dem nice stuff.
Long ago, nobody did have tuh tell yuh tuh "put yuh hands in de air". The sweet music, or a sweet part of a tune forced yuh tuh put yuh hands in the air.
Now a fella does run on stage. Yuh know from experience that is ***** he coming to sing. But before he sing one note, he want yuh to "put yuh hands in ah de ayre".
Amelia
07-21-2009, 09:40 AM
^^I said something similar wrt the music I was exposed to this weekend - there was no melody, there was just a beat and the lyrical content was atrocious!!! Graphic sexual content with generous sprinkling of cusswords. And every song sounded like the previous one. I think the only song thats tood out was something about making love on the nightshift.
Oddly enough, I dont have an issue with raunchy lyrics. I had loved that song with Beenie and Lady Saw. But what was especially disturbing for me was the extremely explicit nature of these lyrics and the fact that they also seek to equate this crap with love. Most of the songs start with let me show u how much i love u and then proceeds to describe her anatomy or his or both.
And these young fellas blasting this day in day out...sheesh.

So wey I fit in dis?
Me eh know dem combo Wayne talkin bout, but ah know Joey and Mano and Police Band.
But ah like some a dem young fellas too. Iwer brother had a nice tune a few years ago (de year it had big blackout...2003 maybe??)
"Rain could fall, wind could blow, we comin out way under zero.
It could be hot like hell, just put a beer in mih hand. Tell dem yuh cyah stop a West Indian."
True, de tune coulda use a nex' verse or two, but it was real ole time house party vibes.
And Traffic tune about makin a cook after fete, "Coal pot, coal pot" Even mih 80something year ole man did add he own ingredients in dat mash up.
But really and truly what I real miss is de ole time brass clash, when one play and de nex' one had was to answer, "Tan Tan!"
Anyone who used to be in Toronto fuh Caribana when it use tuh pass down Yonge St den University Ave mussbe remember how dem brass use tuh sound when passin thru de tunnel, ent?
Lakeshore have more space but no tall building and tunnel fuh de music tuh bounce off.

^^so this thread is about the trini version of sunny and cher? :?
Ams. dodo.... as Shield said, this was a gentler time, when Trini boys ....mostly college students and young adults took foreign music (American, European and Latin) gave it a Trini styling.... and kept us 'young people' dancing for years
....When we went to a fete, no one played vinyl (records back then)....there were no DJ's...it was live music all the way..... Each of these bands 'Combos' (= combined musicians) had their 'following'. These 'combos' were everywhere....even if you had a 'house party' .... you knew someone in a 'combo' who could come play for you..... most of the time, some of these lesser known groups would play for just 'food and drink'.... Like Shield said.... it was a simpler time.
trinialex
10-07-2010, 01:49 PM
Good discussion about these times, but there were DJs at the time playing vinyl records, they were even playing 78's of Bill Black,Hawaiian Guitars,Nat King Cole,Papa John Screech,Connie Francis,Andrew Sisters, and calypsos among others. The fact was most of these DJs were from Arima like Dj "Ken Sussage" and"Ken Gray"... "Fat Man George" from Tunapuna,"Lai Tan" from deep south, and they were able to build and maintain there own equipment.....They played in parties with Sel Duncan,Ray Sylvestre,Mano Marcellin from the then old school and were met by Cassanovas, Bert Bailey, Clarence Curvan, Ancil Wyatt,Silver Strings, Johnny Lee, Esquires Now, Choy Aming ,Rockefellas, Just Fab Deltones, who they perfomed with at Scalet Ibis,as fillers between bands.....La Moui,Guardian CSA,Paragon were the halls in Port of Spain, but places like Breadfruit Lodge in S/Grande, Arima Tennis Court, The Oven and Pink and Black, both in Arima,Perseverance in Tunapuna, The Lodge in Mathura, the old building on Queen's Beach in Mayaro, where were most times, all this came together..
This sure brought a lot of good memories back, and I must say thanks..!
Could anyone remember the name of the band from Santa Cruz that De Fosto played with...??

Byron Lee first played at his brother in law's farm ....which was called Gerizim Farms at the corner of Piarco Old Road and the Highway in Da'badie. There was a big house with a swimming pool at the front of the farm, and the party was held around the pool. Folks should remember that every year Sparrow took the better musicians abroad with the Troubadors and yearly some stayed, like Tanker,Louis Ruiz,Jato,Mungo,Waggy,Wise, and many others. This left a vacuum that was difficult to fill,so the younger guys had nobody to learn from,so two chords became the order of the day.Who is the first to give instructions in a fete.......?????............remember Tony Ricardo..? lead singer with Troubadors......he would have the whole fete moving .

This is what yuh call thread fadder.
Ah learning so much, and recalling so much that ah did fuhget.
The last time that I went in ah public fete in Trinidad was Mad Hatters Ball rong carnival time dong dey in Chaguramas.
That was about 11 or 12 years ago.
And that is when I know that my best feteing days over.
Every blasted singer come out on stage hah tuh play teacher. They start counting from 1..2...3...4...
Then they sing ah verse and dey bawl out "Wheel". The whole damn band stop playing.
Well from teacher, they gorn tuh play Immigration Officer. They want tuh know who from Antigua, who from Jamaica, who from Trinidad...
When they start back singing, they singing one setta tata, and want yuh tuh jump like ah kangaroo, and put yuh hand in the air like the statue ah liberty.
Well is then I see why dey does serve beer in Trinidad in paper cups and not in bottle no more.
Joey Lewis goh be in Maryland on the 30th ah this month, allyuh with allyuh nostalgia making mih feel tuh go.

snowbird you are correct.....I cannot recall the name of the combo....but George Victory played with that band and there was another George who now is the organist at the Tunapuna RC Church......in a manner of speaking that would have been Trinidad first disco.
I would think so as back in the day we young people would look for places (that were not just 'one off' public fetes) to go dance... Scarlet Ibis was the only place we knew of that offered this type of dancing weekly. There may have been more available elsewhere in T&T....but being 'a girl'..... I couldn't stray too far away from home..... we were only allowed to go to dances in 'our neck of the woods' lol
By the way, does anyone know where you can buy 'good quality' combo music?
A few years ago I bought some Esquires and some Silver Strings cd's at a Trini event overhere .... the quality was very poor...... don't even think it was done in 'stereo'
..... I also know people who are holding on to some old copies of LP's.....is it even possible to have those converted from the old 'vinyl' into good quality music now?
snowbird

Yuh just answer meh question bout whey ah cud geh 'good quality music' boy...... Yuh coud make ah killin here in Canada boy....like ah said.... is one setta 'poor quality' music dey doz be flogging here..... and people (like me) buying it.

By the way Ken Belasco lives in Geneve Switzerland, not Sweden as someone suggested. He does not play music anymore. He was working for ILO for many years and is now retired. He is taking care of his younger daughter since his ex wife passed away years ago.

When I hear these drum machines and synthesizers, I does long fuh the time when musicians like your father and dem played real music with real feelings.
