what rubbish you talking about Manning being friends with Bakr. When UNC was in power, their Budget was to lower prices on salt and baking soda, raise people blood pressure, while chicken and beef prices went up sharply under them. Like allyuh forgetting that or what

Somebody even if the price was $4.00 per pound under UNC it was also 100% cheaper than under PNM now

WE MUST REMOVE PNM NOW!

I never eat balisier & rice before and I don’t intend to eat it now.

Chicken price$ rise election day
By ROXANNE STAPLETON-WHYMS Friday, November 2 2007

CHICKEN PRICES have gone up by more than $1 per kilogramme.

The country’s largest poultry producer, Arawak, yesterday announced that it is raising the price of its processed chicken, effective November 5, the day of the General Election.

Arawak said that it continues to face challenges in maintaining current price levels due to the increases in the international prices of grain and freight.

“As a result of these increases we are left with no alternative, but to make an adjustment in our price schedule,” the release said.

Arawak’s whole empty fryers moved from $16.50 per kg to $17.64 and its pre-cut empty fryers went up to $18.19 per kg.

Another of the three leading producers, Nutrimix, increased the price of its processed chicken a month ago, its vice-president, Ronnie Mohammed told Newsday.

Mohammed did not say what Nutrimix’s revised prices were, but stressed that prices are structured based on the category of customer. General manager of Warner Grain Mills, Jerry Ramdass said he did not know “off-hand” the current price of his company’s processed chicken, but said that the price of its live chicken per pound remains at the Government stipulated $4.99.

Nutrimix and Arawak have also maintained the $4.99 live weight price. Depot owners have also increased the price of chicken, Newsday understands.

While producers are maintaining the $4.99 live weight price, there is a growing trade of “middle-men suppliers,” many of whom buy out producers and add a mark-up as they sell to depot owners.

One depot owner, said: “I am paying between $5.25 and $5.50 per pound and after I pluck and gut customers have to pay between $9.50 and $10 per pound. It was between $8 and $8.50 per pound before the increase. There is still a shortage of chicken on the market right now. I usually got 800 heads, but it has boiled down to 400 heads.”

Responding to Arawak’s price increase, Supermarkets Associ-ation president, Heeranand Maharaj said, “If chicken producers increase the price due to hikes in grain and freight costs, then we can’t argue with that.

“I can however say that there is still a shortage of chicken on the market.

Junior Finance Minister Christine Sahadeo yesterday said Government’s reduction of taxes and duties on chicken parts was instituted to counteract rising fuel, freight and grain prices, adding that based on current trends she would expect to see increased importation of chicken parts.

Just become a vegetarian like me......

All of the inputs for poultry and livestock are going through the roof around the world because of poor grain harvests, the move to biofuels because of high oil prices and increased demand from China and India.

We are in for a rough time of it until we get our agricultural sector on track to grow more table crops and move into soya production.

This topic is a bit up my alley so I think i will start a thread on it after the elections so we can discuss further.

^^^Agreed, and you know this is kinda up my alley as well...

...clearly we can see how visionary Manning's move to shut down Caroni and tear down wallerfield was.

(and, yes, I know the Wallerfield project was concieved and started under UNC)

Since when government in grocery business?
Nothing in that article points to any act or omission by government in determining chicken prices, except Sahadeo stating that the government reduced taxes and such to offset rising costs to producers.
And who cares what the price was 12 years ago? Unless your salary hasn't changed in that time, it should be a non-issue.

My Dad tells me that when he started teaching his salary was 9 Pound 60 pence/month. He used to give his mother the 9 Pounds and keep the 60 pence. He used to buy lunch; roti and milk for 3p, occasionally, and would have change from the 60p come month end.
So if JackBas, or TheLight, could tell me I'm going to get a 5cent roti lunch then they will have my support.

The thing is, if you want to compare different eras, first you should answer Falcon's question about chicken prices 7 years before UNC came to power. Then you should show what the buying power of an average salary in different eras. I believe they call it a Consumer Price Index, with the dollar adjusted for inflation.

Are you going to be the new Minister of Finance under JackBas? They'll need creative mathmeticians to convince people they're solving something.

Oh yeah...you were also supposed to explain how the jump in murder rates(and kidnapping too, if you looked at those stats) during the last 2 years of the UNC regime proves that they can handle crime better.
Are you going to have a double portfolio as Min. of National Security too? They'll also need that kind of creativity.

Whereas chicken prices is concerned, i'm not sure if this info is public but check an see who has the monopoly on anything that has to do with chicken in this country, from feed to the poultry themselves. Check who supplies most of the depots.
As much as i dont like the pnm, high chicken prices is not their fault overall.
The monopoly did not come about during the PNM administration.
Even if they wanted to, the UNC had no legal authority to stop it. (But why would they want to stop a campaign contributor anyway?)
If anything that both the PNM and UNC govts are guilty of, is not making effective attempts to break that monopoly by providing better conditions for local competition.
I recall attempts by the pnm admin to import frozen chicken, but as usual, their tactics were not effective in lowering prices.

So dont buy into this crap about high shipping cost for feed etc.
We need a digicell for the chicken industry (digichicken? )
