View Full Version : Panday confirms that Ramesh is behind the UNC fall in 2001

Well folks, take a read of this article from the Newsday newspaper. This is a clear indication that the RLM/Panday relationship won't last very long. I can see RLM being sidelined and shelfed as 'old' book material. I can also see RLM/Panday rift developing just before the election. Who knows, RLM might pull out last minute and hand COP or PNM the Tabaquite seat. Take a read of this article and tell me what you think about it.
Panday: Ramesh behind UNC fall
By Clint Chan Tack Thursday, November 1 2007
UNC POLITICAL Leader Basdeo Panday agreed with Prime Minister Patrick Manning that UNC Alliance (UNC A) Tabaquite candidate Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj helped to bring down the UNC government in 2001.
Contacted yesterday, Maharaj said he preferred not to comment on Panday’s statement.
For the first time in the election campaign, Panday publicly admitted that the former attorney general joined with the PNM to bring down his UNC government in 2001.
“When Ramesh decided that he preferred the PNM...he gave them the government in 2001,” Panday told supporters at the Triangle, Princes Town on Tuesday night.
But Panday appealed to supporters to give the UNC A another shot at power.
“I have come here to ask you for one favour. That is to put us back in government so that we may continue the work which we began in 1995 and was so rudely interrupted in 2001,” he declared as supporters cheered.
Maharaj was not present when Panday made the statement as he was speaking at a UNC A meeting in Rio Claro at that time. Maharaj arrived to speak at the Princes Town meeting after Panday departed for Rio Claro.
When he took centre stage, Maharaj referred to the corruption scandal of 2001 but said there were only two former ministers in the UNC government “in which there were allegations of corruption.”
He claimed these persons were now members of the Congress of the People (COP) and that party has made an election accommodation with the PNM against the UNC A.
Last week, Prime Minister Patrick Manning revealed that information provided by Maharaj to the PNM led to the collapse of the UNC government and prompted investigations into allegations of corruption against former UNC ministers.
Panday’s brother Subhas said Manning spoke so much about Maharaj because “he damn fraid Ramesh.”
“Ramesh is the best attorney general this country has ever seen!” declared the UNC A Princes Town North candidate to the applause of supporters. Subhas claimed the Firearms Interdiction Unit, which is now part of the Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau, has been closed down.
Meanwhile, Panday made another attack against the Maha Sabha and its alleged ties to the COP.
“I hear that (Maha Sabha General Secretary) Sat (Maharaj) holding all kind of puja for the corpse. Now there is a special puja you do when people dead. I hope is that one,” Panday quipped, causing some UNC A supporters to laugh.
Panday evoked even more laughter from the crowd when he replied to “the lady who spoke before me” about the policies a UNC A government planned to implement. The speakers who proceeded Panday were Chaguanas Mayor Suruj Rambachan, youth speaker Shane Mohammed, Naparima candidate Nizam Baksh and UNC A chairman Jack Warner.

You really believe that? It is just a naked grab to hold on to the power of opposition. Ramesh knows he is nothing without Bas (a la Team Unity) and that he cannot destroy Bas (a la leaking the info about Bas. I was in the PNM then). So what do you do when you can't beat them? Join them! Panday is the most selfish person in the history of politics in this country. What is clear is that a united opposition would have walked away with this election. The obstacle to opposition is Panday. Solution? Let Panday step down. Had that happened it would have been smooth sailing. Right now, I am prepared to stand by my principles and support the COP because I honestly believe that they can make a difference. If I am wrong I will be able to correct that in 5 years, as I am doing now, having been a former PNM supporter. I am not prepared to compromise my principle and belief on this propoganda that the real aim is to prevent the PNM from gaining a constitutional majority. I am sorry, I have always been in elections to win. Even if COP gets no seats I know that I tried to make a difference and was not the victim of blind loyalty to any party. Being a former PNM supporter I readily confess that they have mismanaged our country. UNC has proved that they are corrupt and the PNM has proved that they are incapable of governing. That is why I have no choice but to support the COP.

It is amazing all the UNC supporters bashing Sat and Devant. Please tell me who were these 2 supporting in 1991, 1995, 2000, 2001 and 2002? But they committed the cardinal sin of leaving the UNC so all of a sudden they are racists. Was it okay to be a racist while supporting the UNC or did they become racists in 2007? Why wasn't Gillian a problem in 2001?
Maccogirl
11-02-2007, 10:43 PM
Sat was always a racist he was only quite because Panday made his daughter or some family member of his a senator, but when UNC left office Sat let his colors show, and has been at it till now

politics is a strange thing somebody....who better to pull yuh out of the hole than the man who help put yuh in there in the first place. ( remember politics as with everything else has a morality of its own)
those are the 2 likely reasons ramesh is back in pandays 'good graces'. I can't see it any other way.
the same way ramesh helped him in 1995 and brought him down in 2001....pendulum swings again

RLM will have a hard time finding evidence to put PNM Ministers in jail. Now I know that some of them have already been left out of the picture to stand on their own two feet....like Eric Williams and Franklin Khan but with this current set of people the PNM have, they not going to find evidence so easy. RLM can try but I know he will fail in his efforts to do so.

as far as i know there isn't any statute of limitations on corruption issues...i suppose if there is anything to be found it will be found.
