Jamaican dancehall artiste Beenie Man and his band the Ruff Cut Crew are scheduled to perform at the United National Congress Alliance's closing rally on Saturday at the Aranjuez Savannah.

The event, dubbed "Dance of the Revolution", also features Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and the number one Bollywood dance troupe from India, while US civil right activist Rev Jesse Jackson is carded to deliver the feature address.

Only last week, a Jamaican magistrate issued a warrant for the immediate arrest of the Beenie Man, after he failed to appear in the Civil Division of the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

The DJ, whose real name is Moses Davis, was booked to appear before RM Parkins to answer to charges of tax evasion, due to his alleged failure to pay his income tax.

He reportedly owes the Jamaican government $29.29 million in back taxes and $18.64 million in penalties, bringing the outstanding amount to $47.93 million.

When the Express asked UNC-A co-leader Jack Warner whether Beenie Man was able to leave the Jamaica, he said: "As far as I am aware, he is able to leave or else we would not be bringing him."

He then went on to describe the rally as, "The mother of all rallies".

Salman Khan is a popular Indian film actor who appears in Bollywood movies.

Khan, who made his acting debut with the film Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988), had his first commercial success with the blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), and won a Filmfare Best Debut Award for his performance.

During his career years, he was the leading actor in some of Bollywood's biggest hits, such as Saajan (1991), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994), Biwi No.1 (1999) and No Entry (2005).

Some of the local artistes billed to perform are Maximus Dan, Denise "Saucy Wow" Belfon, Soca Elvis and the CLICO Shiv Shakti dancers.

Not the COP style to be bringing foreign civil rights leaders to tell Trinis how to handle their affairs.

This is the backup plan to Mandela?

Look at the support base of the COP you really feel they will ever bring people like Jackson and Sharpton to T&T get real, even if the COP had all the money you wont see that, and it has nothing to do with Trini's can handle their own affairs, you are right it is not their style and sure dose not relate to the COP support base.

Paying ludicrous amounts of money to FOREIGN artistes to attract crowds of local supporters while our OWN local artistes are paid pittance in comparison is indeed very classy also.

Maccogirl
11-01-2007, 06:03 PM
How you know our artist are being paid pittance? Am sure no artist will go a sing on a UNCA stage at election time for pittance not when after election they have to face the public like some of you forget what happened to Gypsy, nah they singing because the price is right and nothing more.

Candidates talking to the public, ads on crime every one of them in the act now, this thing looking just like carnival when everyone use to cuss Minshall for his big stage acts, his elaborate wings and so on, the talk was that is not Carnival you know every fool doing the same thing now, so I will bet anything from now on elections in T&T will go to a new stage, it will be foreign acts and speakers galore wait and see

Not so JP. If you are a Commonwealth Citizen and you can prove that you have been resident in T&T for at least one (1) year you are entitled to vote. This has been so for a very long time now. It was ratified at a CHG meeting well over 25 years ago. A number of Trinis working up and down the Caribbean have voted in Barbados and Jamaica on this basis for a while now.

The fact of the matter that is the UNCA game plan, you may not agree with it but its their political campaign to design how they want, its their money however they chose to spend it that is their business.

It may work for them it may not I see the PNM bringing a lot of Indians into their party, the PNM now plays a chutney song on their campaign trail, no one has an issue with that, its their choice to fashion their political strategy in whatever manner they feel will be of a benefit to them.

The COP going all over the place doing Puja now, some of their candidates more Hindu's than the Hindu's in T&T now, I see they have young blacks on their music trucks all over D/Martin, no one has a issue with that, the COP had the Chinese Dragon dancers in their rally no outcry, every party does what it feels to appeal to a certain section of the community, what is the big deal.

I feel everyone should bring who they want, if Jackson, Sharpton or whoever willing to come to T&T so what

Boy ah hate when all yuh furriners playing fast and loose playing all yuh know what going on in T&T

However, according to current assessment of the perceived mood of the electorate, in an increasingly tight three-way contest, the PNM is expected to retain power for a third-term (including its first term of merely nine months)--but without the two-thirds Manning is anxious to achieve.

The PNM has variously held state power for a combined 34 years since the country gained its political independence 45 years ago, in August 1962.

The EBC has given the size of the electorate for the November 5 poll as 990,000---approximately 100,000 more than that of 2002, and now including about 18,000 Commonwealth citizens eligible to vote, among them CARICOM nationals.

At the last election, there was a 68 percent turn out of voters with the PNM securing 20 of the then 36 parliamentary seats, with 50.7 percent of the popular votes to the UNC's 46.6 percent support for its 16 seats.

18,000 Commonwealth citizens can vote EBC

EBC info

About 18,000 commonwealth citizens eligible to vote in the November 5 general election.
Commonwealth voters comprise about two per cent of the electorate.

ABOUT 18,000 Commonwealth citizens residing legally in T&T for more than a year are eligible to vote in the 2007 general election, according to information provided by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) yesterday.

The EBC said the total number of T&T citizens and residents eligible to vote in the 2007 general election was 989,053.

This means that Commonwealth voters comprise about two per cent of the electorate.

Commonwealth voters would include people born in Guyana, Grenada and St Vincent all English speaking Caribbean countries which are also members of the Commonwealth.

The EBC states that Commonwealth citizens who are 18 years and over, who have maintained legal residence in T&T for at least one year as well as residence in an electoral district for at least two months, are eligible for registration as electors.
