Six years later and not one year PNM was able to control crime, try as they may nothing worked, this is an election year and I’m sure the PNM put out their best effort to keep crime down, but yet the murder rate is almost 290 for the year.
WE MUST VOTE THEM OUT!
Murder toll climbs by 4
By RHONDOR DOWLAT Wednesday, October 31 2007
FOUR persons were killed yesterday, two of them, up to press time, remained unidentified and one woman was shot and wounded in separate incidents. These killings have brought the murder toll to 287 for the year, thus far.
In the first incident, at about 12.15 am yesterday, Keyshor Seepersad, 26, of 391 Southern Main Road, Enterprise Village, Chaguanas was found lying on the pavement not too far from his home, in the vicinity of Swamber Inn Restaurant and Bar and Jerome Sant’s Hardware, bleeding from the abdomen. He was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility where he later died. Police said that Seepersad was stabbed four times – twice in the back and twice in the chest. A motive is yet to be determined.
Seepersad’s eldest brother, Balram yesterday said that the family didn’t believe that robbery was the motive. “He was one of five children in the family. He wasn’t a limer. We believed that he went to get something to eat when something went wrong and he was killed. He also left his job one week ago but I don’t know the reason why,” Balram said.
In the second incident, at about 3 am residents of Marclin Street, Laventille heard a series of gunshots. Upon checks, they discovered the body of a man lying in a pool of blood. Up to yesterday he remained unidentified.
In the third incident, at about 7.30 am yesterday a man was walking through a track on top of Dundonald Hill, Dibe Village, Long Circular, St James, when he stumbled upon the bullet riddled body of a man, who is yet to be identified. Police said the man is of African descent and had a low hair cut. The body was clad in a blue pair of jeans, which was rolled up to the knees, a grey and blue stripped jersey, a blue baseball cap and a pair of slippers. Police averaged the dead man to be between 26 and 30 years of age. Police said that the man was killed execution style, with one gunshot wound behind the right ear.
In the fourth incident, at about 12.15 am Stephen Alexander, 23, of Lodge Place, East Dry River, Laventille, was walking east along Rose Hill, East Dry River, Port-of-Spain when he was approached by two men armed with guns. Police said the men opened fire.
Upon hearing the gunshots, police said, a woman identified as Ann Mc Allister, 53, ran outside her home to see what was happening and was subsequently shot in the back. Alexander and Mc Allister were both taken to hospital. Alexander was warded and later succumbed to his injuries at about 10 am, while Mc Allister was said to be in a stable condition. Investigations are continuing.

Well, I guess we'll all just have to vote COP won't we?
But seriously, if anyone on this forum actually puts their X by PNM, they are retarded. Nuff said.
If they don't like the other parties, well, they should not waste their time to go out and vote.

If crime was actually the only issue here then I could see the UNC having some points. Ramesh isn't the answer though and giving the police more cars this time around won't do it either.
If Ramesh is the weapon against crime then I hope he ready to moonlight as a PI. You need to catch the criminals before you can put them away.
Nah crime is no problem, de problem is housing according tu de PNM. Dem skyscrapers ent housing for de common man!

what rubbish you talking about Manning being friends with Bakr. When UNC was in power, their Budget was to lower prices on salt and baking soda, raise people blood pressure, while chicken and beef prices went up sharply under them. Like allyuh forgetting that or what.

The NAR didn't have anything to work with back then....remember all the money was gone? I not saying everything they did was right but the country was broke and hard decisions had to be made. Is also because of the policies back then we have a manufacturing sector here that was allowed to take root during that recession.
The PNM really squandered their time and the UNC did some good but most of the workers and minds in that administration are not with Panday anymore. Why we must overlook corruption in the highest political office just because we have or had it nice? Is still the people's money and those in charge need to account for how it is spent.

The effective UNC isn't there anymore, it's a shell of itself with it's movers and shakers gone to greener pastures where they don't have to deal with maximum leaders and one man politics. Those facts are there to see as well.

Im not saying that the government is not partly responsible for crime , trinidad needs a stronger middle class-the gap between the rich and the poor is too vast. The poor is too many and the middle class is too few. I think that the crime we have is partly because of the faulty institutions we have in place and partly on us, the people not taking responsibility for the consequence of their actions....everybody elses fault but us. We have to admit that we are dealing with a twisted, delinquent, and wicked generation of Trinidadians and I think that we have to nurture the up and coming generation because the current generation is already lost. We will have to wait them out(hopefully they dont kill us before) untill they either kill themselves out or grow older and wiser. Apart from that, I dont think any political party will singularly solve crime in Trinidad.

Lets not forget Crime isn't the currant PNM's fault .. ( you could probably lay more blame on Eric Williams/George Chambers/ England)
Our crime problem is many years in the making , due to a failure as a society to create sane individuals and spread wealth equally , compounded with an economic boom which tends to increase most things , including crime .
Its the PNM's fault for being too incompetent to curb crime significantly ... Our laws still don't allow video evidence in court , there is no DNA legislation .
The police is still too incompetant to be effective , from what i hear there is a police station somewhere with a bar in the back decked with scotch .... another has an Xbox which is always in use .
A UNC government will probably help crime overall as it won't be soft on 'community leaders' , but Panday and RLM aren't miracle workers. Unless you start arresting every unemployed black youth on the street , crime isn't going to go away .
I'd expect a non PNM government to decrease the crime rate 10-20% for the most . Pre 2000 crime rates won't be seen for many years , it will require re tooling the way the society works.
Not that i'm saying go vote PNM... I hate them too , but lets take an objective look at things , comparing crime now with 10 years ago isn't fair , conditions have changed...
Like any good science student knows , if you are trying to differentiate two things, give them both the exact same conditions and see what the do.

What people like The Light will never realise is that Panday's behaviour added to this current crime wave we have in Trinidad. Ask him to explain this one...before you do, read up what is the meaning of Anomie before you answer.
An intellectual person or someone who knows sociology very well will be able to establish linkages between Anomie, Panday's behaviour in politics and the current crime wave.

I dont think any political party will singularly solve crime in Trinidad.
Another breath of fresh air.
Why are these crazies trying to hoodwink a desperate population under siege from the criminal elements? What do they think will be the consequence if they got into offfice and can't solve the crime problem "in six months" (was that Ramesh or the COP.
All of them know how to solve crime. Does anyone here (including Light) really believe that COP or UNC will come in and reduce crime over and above what's happening now?
Everyone focuses on the blimp as if that's the only thing that money was spent on.
Money and time has been spent on re-training, expanding and reconfiguring the police service itself. The succesful family court was set up as a prototype for reform in the other courts.
I suspect that, quietly, everyone knows that crime will not be solved overnight but they want to be fooled.
Just a few minutes ago i saw on tv6 that the UNC has produced a lengthy report from some foreigners they commisioned some 8 months ago to report on the crime problem in T&T. Hey presto, it's ready tonight, just in time for elections, what a coincidence. The key one-liner read out from the report: "Crime in T&T can be solved, one just needs the political will"
sounds almost like COP rhetoric to me.

RED OCTOBER
38 killed in bloodiest month this year
Peter Christopher pchristopher@trinidadexpress.com
Thursday, November 1st 2007
IN a six-hour span, the country's murder rate shot up by four, to 291, in three separate incidents.
Within the last 72 hours, there have been no fewer than ten murders, making this the bloodiest week in the bloodiest month of the year so far, with 38 murders.
On Tuesday night in Arima, compact disc vendors Arthur Seetal and David Murphy were walking on Devenish Street around 9 p.m., not far from their stalls, when a black SUV pulled up alongside them. Two men dressed in black came out of the vehicle with machine guns, a nine millimetre handgun and a shotgun, and opened fire on the men.
Murphy, 22, was struck 17 times in his face, throat and knee.
Seetal, 25, was also shot several times in the head and chest. Police said he was taken to the Arima Health Facility, where he died around 3 a.m. yesterday. Seetal, who was expecting his first child with his wife in January, would have been 26 in two weeks. A third man, Fareed Sulam, 23, who is Murphy's cousin, was grazed by a bullet during the incident and was discharged from hospital.
One month ago, Murphy's younger brother, Davie, was shot in the back of the head. The younger Murphy is still unable to walk and speak properly.
Police have not identified a motive for the incident.
ASP Johnny Abraham, Insp Stanley Ramdeen, Acting Sgt Andrew Lawrence, and PCs Sunil Ramoutar and Sheldon Bellile are conducting investigations into the incident.
Later on Tuesday, in Port of Spain, Aldwyn Bobb, a 36-year-old construction worker, was shot dead on George Street.
Relatives said that just after 11 p.m., Bobb, also known as "DJ" or McDowell, left his George Street home to get food for his family. Some time after, several shots were heard and Bobb was later found lying in a pool of blood on the pavement. Homicide officers suspect the murder may be gang related.
Investigations are ongoing.
In the third incident, in Morvant, Hugh Mitchell, a 32-year-old security guard, was found dead at his home at Cipriani Avenue, Second Caledonia, Morvant. Relatives said they heard loud gunshots around 12.45 a.m. He was found in his bedroom with two gunshot wounds to the head.
There is suspicion that the death may be related to an argument Mitchell had with a relative on Tuesday, but police are still to confirm a motive.
These incidents raised the number of murders for October to 38, with one day (yesterday) to spare. The murder figure stood at 318 for the corresponding period last year.
Police were also still to classify the killing of Odero Harding up to last night. Reports are that, Odero, 31, was stabbed following a domestic dispute around 9 p.m. Tuesday and died later at Port of Spain General Hospital.
A 24-year-old woman is currently in police custody in connection with the incident.

They did have crime down when they were in office..i'll give them that. PNM does not have a clue how to fix crime..they haD sooo many ministers of National Security who just did not know what to do...
i can tell you that the PM knows who MR BIG is... :!:
And what about that BLIMP? :?:

So lets get UNC-A back in there and hopefully we will have a chance to get the COP brains to suggest ways of dealing with crime, inflation, etc.
Instead of bringing back the PNM and having Manning saying to anyone who suggests 'f***k off, crime is not an issue, I ent gettin rob, so its not'
or 'p***s off, I don't eat chicken and thing, I also don't buy food, so I dunno how people could say ting high'
or even 'shut up, when i does be on the road, i doh see no traffic, yeh, ah bunch of cars does be at standstill on that road across from the beetham there, but de maxis does move for me when i passin on the road i always use, so wha traffic you talking about'

The only reason Manning iz not ah jail bird is because the PNM have so much experience theifing - alyuh forget the days of O-Halloran et al, iz not Panday fault he doh know how to hide the theifing as good as Patsy 8-)
Trini's have short memories, at the end of Panday's tenure in 2000 he won again clearly because people were happy with performance, the police service was particularly happy with the way they were treated etc.
Manning has tried very hard to put on the face of utmost integrity - I know from personal sources that he has collected under handed money in the past - Trinidad is a small rock - I also know someone who was at one of his 3am meetings.
At the end of the day all politicians try to sprinkle in yuh eye an tell yuh it's raining. With the PNM and UNCA on nuteral grounds as far as integrity is concerned, I voting for Crime reduction and performance, which I firmly beleive the UNCA can deliver

Ahm, ah does pong de man but if Patrick was in dat, he would have never been in financial difficulties while he was in Opposition. I doh know who your sources are, but if I know no one else, I know Patrick Manning, I know how he thinks and how he operates, I know he can do and what he cannot do, I know what he will do and what he won't do, and if anyone say Patrick took money underhandedly, I will be proud to call that person a damn liar.

Please put forward your evidence to support your claim....not on what your sources say.
On a personal note, please be careful what you write on the forum because the mods may not like your style of writing....The part where you said PNM have so much experience thiefing....I would edit that if I were you to be on the safe side. Alot of other things we say on the forum about politicians, is because of what we have read in the newspapers and we could rely on such claims as an original source.
Thanks.

I was listening to the UNC political rally on http://www.wintvworld.com coming live from Aranguez in Trinidad. I heard Panday delivered a speech , I almost got emotional and its difficult for that to happen with me eh. The man could talk man..... Patrick cant touch him and Dookeran cant touch him either. The man gave an empassioned speech: he apoligized for mistakes made, spoke about his longevity in politics and the fact that he is in his twilights and asked for one last chance before he bows out in the next five years at which he would be Seventy nine years old(79). I felt for this older soul who have been the chief battle axe for so many people of tt and I must say that he gets more favor with me now, than ever before.... whatever the outcome, Panday(One of the few-if not the only, remaining greats of Caribbean politics) will always, always be a Trinidad and Tobago national icon and his name will cemented in the chronicles of TnT history.
I say ..... good luck to Panday and the UNC.

No doubt he is a master orator and I really hope he gets to live out his days in peace with his family.
I heard parts of the speech as well and even though he apologized for his past mistakes he's still living some of them now and throughout this election.
This other chance thing also makes me thing he wants another shot at the PM spot. Why doesn't he just come out and say that then? Why all the power plays before within his party?

Well...this has been a rather interesting thread. We have peanut, in one post, defending Manning, yet in another post she flip flops on the same argument. We have a 22 year old asking if any of us remembers O'Hallaran, who, if memory serves, would have already absconded with all that money before she was born.
Then we come to the UNC sycophants and their spin. I can't count how many times I've seen these people talk about the US$9.00/barrel oil price, although that price was a quickly corrected crash, which lasted less than a month. And of course, where there is Bas, there is TheLight.
First off, I can't see how a 3 year dip in the murder rate can be extrapolated into a gov't being better at handling crime in general. And if we just wanted to look at murder rates, we would have to look at the years previous to the UNC administration to see if the dip was only during their tenure or if it was a continuation of a trend. If one looks at TheLight's chart, one will see that murder started to jump in the last couple years of the UNC regime, so how is that explained? Did the UNC become complacent after the numbers lowered, or was it just that more people felt like killing other people in those years?
I agree that the PNM has not taken crime seriously, but I don't accept that the UNC has what it takes to make a difference. In fact, I don't think the UNC will tackle crime in the traditional "bad areas." I believe that if they win they will concentrate on chasing the gunmen back up the hill and out of their Central strongholds.
I can't say how COP would fare on crime, but I'd rather see a fresh approach to governance than the same old tired hasbeens.

Yes, I agree. a great orator, but this is not the time or place to wake ppls emotions. Same as the priest, play on pples emotions to influence and fool them. Time to graze in those green pastures bas. Be the advisor, the caretaker, but leave!.This is the future of the nation at stake, no time for foolish emtions. We are all greatful for your input!
