Post mortem on the strategy for the game against Costa Rica.
(i) Put Carlos Edwards as right back because he likes to go forward and his lack of commitment to the position will allow the Costa Ricans to attack us from that side of the field. They are evidently very strong in attack from their left side.
(ii) Start without Chris Birchall since he is very solid in right mid field and if he is there he will foul up attacks from the Costa Ricans from their favored side of the field. Moreover, leaving him on the bench satisfies the black agenda.
(iii) Leave Colin Samuel off and even when he is brought on play him on the right side of the field. This will ensure we do not attack the Costa Ricans from our left side of the field because their right back position seems not too capable of withstanding a strong attack.
(iv) Keep Dwight Yorke away from the goal. He is too clinical a finisher. Put hard luck strikers on the field so that most, if not all, of our chances will go a begging.
(v) Let Russel Latapy bench himself since that provides the perfect excuse for Dwight to play in mid field and away from the Costa Rican goal. Dwight can control the game from there as captain in Russel's absence.
In fact, that senior player captain responsibility that Dwight is given should keep him distracted enough so that he will not concentrate on attack on goal in any match.
Arguably it is understandable that the coach should want to watch the game from off the field as this gives him a better opportunity to view what is happening and to see how his plan is working out, especially seeing this is his debut match.
We are made to understand that he will also miss the other one and he himself seems to be glad for the opportunity to sit out the matches, get paid as coach, and rest his tired body after all the rigorous training.
The Result:-
A mediocre Costa Rica team is left looking like world beaters while we remain as only good competitive underdogs.
I said in another place that if Latapy does not have the courage to put Dwight right in front of goal he will not impress me as one who knows how to win a tournament. Well he did not put Dwight there.
Lastly, once I saw the likes of the infamous one I spoke of in another thread showing up on tv I suspected that there was bad omen for us in this match. All the above strategy of the team seems to have come straight from him since strategy to undermine our team seems to have been his trade mark over the years.
We are knocking Jack Warner for selling out in '89 well I think there is one who keeps on match fixing against the T & T team and that one along with his helpers are at it again.
The coaching evidently brought some improvement in the level of skill and fitness of the players thanks to Russel but he is still a puppet controled by those pulling the strings in my view.
These are my views. What are yours?.
