Post mortem on the strategy for the game against Costa Rica.

(i) Put Carlos Edwards as right back because he likes to go forward and his lack of commitment to the position will allow the Costa Ricans to attack us from that side of the field. They are evidently very strong in attack from their left side.

(ii) Start without Chris Birchall since he is very solid in right mid field and if he is there he will foul up attacks from the Costa Ricans from their favored side of the field. Moreover, leaving him on the bench satisfies the black agenda.

(iii) Leave Colin Samuel off and even when he is brought on play him on the right side of the field. This will ensure we do not attack the Costa Ricans from our left side of the field because their right back position seems not too capable of withstanding a strong attack.

(iv) Keep Dwight Yorke away from the goal. He is too clinical a finisher. Put hard luck strikers on the field so that most, if not all, of our chances will go a begging.

(v) Let Russel Latapy bench himself since that provides the perfect excuse for Dwight to play in mid field and away from the Costa Rican goal. Dwight can control the game from there as captain in Russel's absence.

In fact, that senior player captain responsibility that Dwight is given should keep him distracted enough so that he will not concentrate on attack on goal in any match.

Arguably it is understandable that the coach should want to watch the game from off the field as this gives him a better opportunity to view what is happening and to see how his plan is working out, especially seeing this is his debut match.

We are made to understand that he will also miss the other one and he himself seems to be glad for the opportunity to sit out the matches, get paid as coach, and rest his tired body after all the rigorous training.

The Result:-

A mediocre Costa Rica team is left looking like world beaters while we remain as only good competitive underdogs.

I said in another place that if Latapy does not have the courage to put Dwight right in front of goal he will not impress me as one who knows how to win a tournament. Well he did not put Dwight there.

Lastly, once I saw the likes of the infamous one I spoke of in another thread showing up on tv I suspected that there was bad omen for us in this match. All the above strategy of the team seems to have come straight from him since strategy to undermine our team seems to have been his trade mark over the years.

We are knocking Jack Warner for selling out in '89 well I think there is one who keeps on match fixing against the T & T team and that one along with his helpers are at it again.

The coaching evidently brought some improvement in the level of skill and fitness of the players thanks to Russel but he is still a puppet controled by those pulling the strings in my view.

These are my views. What are yours?.

Jeez kid. No matter what TNT do on the field it will be open to criticism because we have a young coach. Let me tell you thou, no one knows Trini players better than Yorke and Latas. That said he gave us the best possible line-up and it almost produced results. Keep in mind that Latas didn't favorite anyone and each player had to work for their spot with the exception of Yorke, Jones Dennis and obviously Carlitos.

You should put this game behind you as we did and look forward to Mexico. After seeing the Ticos played against us I dont know how you can say that about them. They are the best in the region and have been for quite some time now, they recently found the right combination, its working for them. When you look for patience, stability in defense, creative work moving forward, finding, link-up play and finishing, costa rica wins.

Credit to them and please use the other threads for comments and feedback.

Only the defense and to be honest Birchall did provide a spark but nothing came out from it.

one word sets up the game for me:

dotishness!!!!

The main problem to me seems like complacency after scoring, and a lack of mental strength/toughness when in a commanding position in the game. I strongly believe that Latapy and them should get a sports psychologist to come as assist the team, since in three games in this group so far leads have been surrended!

Imagine if next season, Man united draw or lose a lot of games in which they held leads in. Wouldn't people say "eh, Sir Alex, what going on? how come Rooney, Carrick, Rio, Ronaldo and Giggs and them keep losing leads nah?" One would start to question if the team was mentally strong enough. Whether club or international football, it's the same rationale at play here.

Safe to say this is the end of TNT's w/cup 2010 hopes, if not mathematically, at least realistically speaking.

Jeez kid. No matter what TNT do on the field it will be open to criticism...

*** No. If they win it will not be open to criticism but whatever they do wrong on the field will be open to criticism.

Let me tell you thou, no one knows Trini players better than Yorke and Latas. That said he gave us the best possible line-up...

*** What criterion are you using to determine that the line up was the best possible one? Simply the fact that they might know players the best?

How come they don't know that Carlos has matured to an all out right winger and not a right back? How come they did not know that Colin is the most effective left winger that we have? How come they don't know that Dwight is still the most fruitful striker we have?

It is just like the politics in Trinidad you know: always square pegs in round holes. The Minister of finance is a lawyer, Minister of planning an accountant, at one time the Minister of health was an engineer and so on.

You are still young maybe age will bring wisdom to you one day and you will realize the strategy of so misplacing your human resource is often with an evil ulterior motive.

...and it almost produced results.

*** It produced results. We Lost!

You should put this game behind you as we did .

*** I have put the game behind me. The thing is, the whole National team went with it.

...and look forward to Mexico

*** To please who? The punters? The more support the team has might only mean the more the match fixers can negotiate for in selling us out.

After seeing the Ticos played against us I dont know how you can say that about them.

*** After seeing how easily they can be out paced by our players and how effectively even a greenhorn like Tinto could get around their defense that was an easy deduction for me to make.

Tinto actually had to undo himself by blundering every cross for the Costa Ricans not to look the mediocre team they really are.

The strikers also had to give them some assistance and save them embarrassment by throwing away the few chances that managed to come their way, chances that undoubtedly would have been many from both sides of the field had Colin and Carlos been the attackers from both flanks.

Give me that same squad of players and if Costa Rica isn't beaten by at least 2 clear goals I will not be satisfied. A 5:0 victory in favor of T & T would have seemed a more reasonable score to me.

When you look for patience, stability in defense, creative work moving forward, finding, link-up play and finishing, costa rica wins.

*** When you play against a team that is not putting due pressure on your team by being a menace to you especially in attack and launching effective onslaughts on your goal it becomes very easy to do all that.
