Welcome to Trinidad and Tobago, the land of Steelband Calypso, limbo and beautiful people. Next week on November 5-2007 the citizens of TnT will be going to the poles to elect the Government that would govern the state for the next five years. In making their choice, citizen's will have to weigh the facts, sought out the rubies from the
regular stones, and make a decision. Are we as a little , most sophisticated of the Caribbean nations ready to embrace developed country status, given the inherent simplicity of our Caribbean way of life and who we would like to lead us into the realm of the developed world.

We live in a democratic and free society, where all could vote for whom he or she pleases, whether the party is presumed good or bad… that’s the right of all in a democratic society. Is there such a thing as a right or wrong party or is it who represents your interests whatever it may be: family values, vision for the future of your children and you, who will best curb crime in the country etc; and your best guess of who will lead the country with least corruption because none is without sin.
In order to make that important decision , one must look back at the last five years and see whether any progress or development was made during the last five years. One must ask the question if the country is better of now (a time of plenty )than five years ago: is any infrastructure in place or is at the moment being put in place to make your quality of living or everyday life better. Are there adequately equipted and enough schools, housing, hospitals, electricity, water, fair food prices…if those are inadequate, is there any work that is currently in progress to improve or correct that flaw?.
Is the thirtiary education access for all citizens better than it was five years ago. Is there more jobs available to young people (How high or low is the employment rate). Are you working. All these are important questions that we should ask ourselves before we go to cast our vote. This is a very important decision. Look for who could provide or is providing progress for the country and not vote for a party because you have always did; be intelligent. Trinidad is one of the most developed countrys in the Caribbean but it could be argued that most or a lot of its people are not evolved as we would like to think. A lot of people in Trinidad, is still stuck in a very backward way of thinking, it could either be by choice or just sheer ignorance. When I heard the current governments agenda to pursue developed nation status I was taken aback to what that essentially means; and that also means the development of a nations people and that includes-human development, not just infrastructure like Trains , highways, building infrastructure to encourage investment in city space there is a real need for taller buildings people….. tall buildings is not to show you are a developed country, its for capitalizing on space …it would encourage firms to invest…stop being blind sided people…. You want to be a first world people …. THINK. I guess our ambition to be a developed nation for now is looking far aloof from what most of the people in our twin island state really are.....with that said, developed nation status will be quite a feat for little TnT. But anything is possibly.... but thats only with god. No, I am not a doubting Thomas, it is indeed possible.
Now, there are three parties competing to be elected… look at the tract record of the current, look at the track record of the opposition and judge, yes I say judge, make your best judgement as to what could possibly be expected of the third….. Then cast your vote. I will leave with one statement that I used to hear my mother say: “ When you are in good house, sometimes bad house does call yuh”.
Doh matter who you vote for …. Go cast your vote … its your democratic right… youths particularly … go out and vote….. it could possibly have a devastating impact on you if you don’t. PEACE.

There is no party there with absolute integrity .... so its almost like INNie MINNie MY-nie MO ...as sad as that may seem. But I guess we just have to count our blessings, think and make a tactfull choice. I could be sold on rapit rail transit and the mass housing for citizens in tt and the availability of tirtiary education for more people .. because ultimately we will have to rely not on OIL , for that wont last forever... but on our most precious resource -our people and their minds..... and that Is what , albeit difficult, will give us a chance to become a developed people and nation.......

you know, a lot of ppl are actually sold on what the PNM promises. Not to say that this is different from any other party, but with the PNM u have the past 5 years to guage from. Yes, the ideas all sound great but they arent new ideas. We've been hearing about many initiatives all along. But consider ideas and then consider what was actually done. I cannot endorse a party who, instead of building and fixing and outfitting police stations, spent millions on blimps instead.Instead of cracking down on gang warfare, offered gangleader the ''community leader" mantle and gave out million dollar contracts to them. Ah mean tuh say, if they were killing each other over the small URP money, u could imagine what they going to do for million dollar contracts?! Crime is out of hand to the point where I honestly feel unsafe unless I'm barricaded at home. So, my vote will go to the ppl with the best plans to fight crime bec I refuse to see a member of my family becoming a statistic bec a govt will not seriously address their minds to the issues at hand.

Come on Serenity. Do you therefore endorse kidnappings? The blimp has been the single biggest reason for the reduction of kidnappings in T&T. You would have rathered them outfitting police stations instead of dealing with that urgent problem? I doubt it. Has any other party offered any ideas for cracking down on gangstas or have you heard all of the parties state that they would expand URP and CEPEP in these communities in the attempt of creating an entrepreneurial class in these depressed areas? Has COP said anything different? Police have used all sorts of force in the hopes of ending crime in areas like Morvant, not just in T&T but all over the world, but what has it yeilded? Has force ever made a depressed community a thriving one? Give me an example? The offering of hope, education, and opportunity is the only way. Force does not eliminate the factors that breed criminals in the first place; the police kill a dozen of them today and 2 dozen take their place the next. More people to kill or imprison but where has it gotten us?

In countries like Brazil where the police are known for being extremely brutal where criminals are concerned, there have even been reports of authorized executions and death squads, has crime been reduced at all? Even now with all of these gangstas being killed by each other gangs do not have a membership problem which should tell you a lot about the desperation some of these people feel. There has got to be a better way.

KB, maybe I missed the study but where exactly did they say that the blimp was useful? How many criminals were caught bec of info the blimp provided? How often was the blimp actually used?! 90% of the time the bloody thing out of commission! Has detection rates increased?

As for force used in depressed areas, where did I ever say use unnec force? What happen to enforcing the law? That ent good enough? These citizens special that they exempt from being caught and arrested and sent to jail? Social programmes should be implemented of course. Nobody eh say no, but those who help those in the depressed areas arent the govt. Its the NGOs that take up the brunt of that work.

Besides, we had a debate already on the use of giving out million dollar contracts to gangs and u conceded that they learn nothing about business in the competitive world and there's no incentive bec they can always rely on ready-made contracts. So it eh have nuttin like tendering etc. U also conceded to the view that if the govt should one day, cease giving out contracts they'll just go back to locking neck and killing. So exactly what's your point now?

King B just supporting PNM, even though it saw an increase in crime of over 200% in its regime.

Don't worry, King just fraid that when PNM lose he can't go and bathe in the Mansion pool and talk bad about non-Africans with daddy all day long.

When a man is willing to sleep with another man (the Devil;s father) isn\'t he a homosexual. When some one sleeps with any and every body for personal gain isn\'t that person a whore? If thats right then we have a whoring political homosexual on our hands.

Baby King,

Boy yuh good! Your question "Do you therefore endorse kidnappings?" is a double edge sword. As we all know, kidnappings skyrocketed under the government of Patrick Manning, putting Trinidad on several international travel advisories. Please sir, tell us how these blimps, which were mostly parked on the ground, were able to deter kidnappings? Were the bad guys captured or killed, wiping out forever the chances that they will rise up once again to freely feast on the innocent? Is Trinidad safer or as safe as it was five years ago? All the billions spent on blimps, fancy surveillance electronics and questionable foreign expertise have returned pennies on the dollar. The three biggest "crime" stories for this Manning government were the arrest of the Pandays, the attempted arrest and frameup of the CJ and the sixty or so prostitutes arrested by a huge contingent of mask wearing PNM law enforcement officers.

As for CEPEP and URP being expanded by the two other parties running for election, do you think they are so stupid as to admit that they will make changes to this PNM grabfest?

Anyone with an iota of common sense can do the measurements for themselves. Have we gotten fair value for the vast sums of money spent by Patrick in the last five years? Has the flow of water improved over the last five years? Has health care improved by 5% over the last five years? We know that the Mannings did very well for themselves over the last five years, with multiple salary increases, $148 million palace, big wuk for Petronella and seed money for Brian's bidness. Did the PNM government make a ripple aginst poverty in the last five years?

With all the dollars flowing in Trinidad can anyone say that we are the best that we can be?

I will really love to see though how another party would handle crime in tnt ... If they could bring back the tnt to the tnt that I grew up in .... they will have my vote for the rest of my life.... but for some reason I am remaining a doubting thomas.
