No, it's not real. This was debunked a while ago. It's just a YouTube stunt involving video special effects.

Yes, microwave energy is used in both cell phones and in microwave ovens. But the amount of energy used by the devices is VERY different. Cell phones only use a few watts of energy max during a call, and in fact, the better the signal from the tower, the lower the wattage of the cell signal, so most of the time your phone wouldn't even be using the max wattage. Now compare that to a microwave oven, which uses no less than 700 watts to heat food (the standard size ones typically use over 1000 watts). Yet, even at that wattage, a typical microwave takes a lot longer to heat anything than what you see in that video.

The principle behind how microwaves cause heating is that radio frequencies in the microwave band causes water molecules to vibrate, producing heat which then spreads to other molecules. But it requires lots of power to get any significant rise in temperature, which is why microwave ovens use so much wattage. In order to pop a kernel of corn, you have to raise the temperature or the kernel to 180 degrees C (that's why corn doesn't 'pop' when you boil it, but does when you heat it in oil). There's just no way that a cell phone that only generates signals of 2-3 watts could do that in seconds, when a 700 watt microwave using an electrical outlet rather than a tiny lithium ion battery couldn't manage it. In fact, if this was a real issue with cell phones, you wouldn't be able to use them without burning your face and your hand after several seconds into a call, because, like popcorn and other foods we heat in microwave ovens, our bodies contain water molecules that will heat up if exposed to powerful microwave radiation.

This is a hoax. However, there is a risk to your health using cell phones that have the same frequency as microwave ovens.
